2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Shines in the Real World

Man, that's beautiful. My wife has an Ioniq 5 and LOVES this car. I wouldn't have to sell her too hard on it. 😂 On the issue of "Can this work as a daily driver", my daily is an EV6 GT. I have a daily Tacoma to Seattle commute. But we have a home charger. So the short range on the car really is of no consequence. The 5N is a bit more extreme than my GT. But I would imagine it has similar manners.

Actually, I leave the house at 4 AM. So I just have open road in front of me the whole way. Well, except the inexplicable amount of other weirdos driving around at that time. Not many, but more than you would think!

I'm curious how your tires are holding up. And yeah, range shouldn't be an issue even though you drive more than most. I plan on roadtripping my EV up and down the west coast and to Missoula.

@ I have just shy of 30K on the factory tires. So far, so good. Though I’m planning on getting a new set of all season tires within the next month or so. Don’t really want to be doing any potential snow driving in summer tires.

Thanks for the reviews over the years, Tom. Thanks to you, I bought a Chevy Bolt EUV a few years ago. As happy as I am with it, the car that I really loved was the Hyundai IONIQ 5, which was a joy to drive. The only reason I didn’t buy it was the price difference between the two cars.

Hi, and thank you for featuring the Abyss Black N5. At first, I didn't want another black vehicle. But I am so glad I took Harbor Hyundai in Long Beach, california, up on their MSRP Only DEAL, back in July. And the video out at the track with Mr Beirmann, made the N an easy choice. I daily my N, 46 miles round trip commute to work, and this beats my ex Etron S easily! I consistently get no less than 265 miles of range on a full charge. So, I'm so humble to have been blessed to be able to purchase this vehicle. It has become a Really Good Friend.

I has the interior space of a Q8 e-tron, Cayenne Coupe or X5. Quiet as an S63 AMG which has a much worse fake sound.... And a proper driver's car. My closest gas alternatives is an RS6 which cost more then double here, and running costs are like triple that of my 5 N for my use (home charging). No car offers such a good family vehicle AND a great driver's car in one package, at remotely this price point... just not for those suffering from (usually irrational) range anxiety or (real or perceived) piss poor charging infrastructure.

Both this and the Porsche were also on my short list, but then I realized I wanted one last ICE hurrah and got a manual '24 CT4 V Blackwing. My next car will be electric, and it'll likely be whatever the next gen N or Magma will be by then. Loved the focus on day to day here. I have to assume most of us, (those of us that watch car videos on KZbin religiously,) will track a car a handful of times at most, but it's the day-to-day life that we live with. Faced the same choice, if you want a more luxurious interior and more comfortable suspension (The Porsche air suspension is unbeatably good) go for the Porsche, if you want to have more fun and be more involved go with the 5N. Both great cars, I opted for the 5N and love it.

Great review. We rented one for a weekend to get a true feel for ownership as I was hyped on this and wanted to sell my spouse on it...but we realized we really needed power seats and mirrors tied to profiles so they'd adjust automatically every time we get in. I know that's not a deal breaker for everyone but we're a 2-driver 1-car household and are always changing who's driving so both of us needing to adjust all the seat positionings each time we got in after the other person was driving made us feel like we were in an '04 Camry and got annoying after just 2 days. The Mach-E GT was just as fun to drive and the power memory seats worked perfectly, plus had a frunk which we use regularly and much more range, so we went with that. The fun driving of the Hyundai couldnt overcome some of the lack of practicality for our needs. If Hyundai added this in a future model year we'd come back to consider it.

@@DrivenCarReviewsthe Taycan is within a couple inches of the Lyriq in length and width. But it’s 10 inches shorter. That short stature really is apparent when a person is getting in and out of the vehicle. Good thing you’re 5’9” and the wife is even smaller. You’ll fit.

@ CPO Taycan 4S would be the nicest looking car in the neighborhood. The 5N would blend in with all the other Ioniq 5s in Seattle. Personally, I’d fret about getting door dings or hitting a pothole in the Porsche and would have to spring for all the aftersales upcharges that Porsche offers.

Thanks for this one Tom, another interesting choice. When you reviewed features, it occurred to me that at some point, I would love a deep dive on V2L systems and who does it best. We're thinking V2L will be a must-have in our next. We'd use it especially for our off- grid cabin, on the list with max cargo room, an ability to drive down 300m of trail, and good snow ability. So far all i can think of is R1T and maybe the Taycan Cross, neither of which i can afford.

Have you considered a used F-150 Lightning? The XLT, Lariat, and Platinum trims can be configured with a 9.6KW V2L. I'm seeing 1-owner trucks selling between $40-45K.

Next generation, if there are next generations, should start to really hit the sweet spot. I'm thinking of an electric wagon from Volvo / Polestar with AWD and clearance, and V2L, would be my sweet spot for size and ability.

If. only the 5N had slightly more of what the 5 Limited offers - head-up display, power seats (for sharing the car with another driver)... A mild grumble about "Driven" reviews - the videos are almost entirely on suburban or rural roads, except for the wild track scenes in this one. Many viewers drive in urban traffic, where "0 to 60" is an aspiration, or maybe a myth. It would be helpful to have a sense of how a vehicle feels in the conditions we face regularly.

I am a big EV person. Hyundai/Kia have been off my list because of quality problems I have had with their products previously. Beyond that the range of the N just is not good enough. I get that it is performance but 220 where most EVs charge to 80% (176) of plus the winter reduction of range means this would be hard to live with. Mid $60k in our area. Fun toy but I could not justify the limitations as a primary car especially at that price.

2025 Kia EV6 GT will share the same 641 hp motor, battery, fake transmission, brakes and suspension with Ioniq 5N. But, it will be tuned as a GT car, not as a track weapon. It will have more convenience features such as power seats, memory seats, power moonroof and will be tuned with softer suspension setting. So, if you want more wife-friendly version of Ioniq 5N, EV6 GT could be a good choice.

I've seen this happened in the motorcycle industry. Zero makes good performance EV motorcycles but they do not sell well. Enthusiast markets are mostly traditionalists whose ideas are not easily swayed.

We have a problem here in Nebraska with groups of young people gathering doing burnouts and attacking interlopers. Sheriff deputies helped mitigate the problem by arresting them and confiscating their cars. I’ll be looking for a good deal from the impound lot!

@@WFO. What I like best is how the 5N rotates in bends, which I would never have thought possible with its weight. Then the subsequent outward acceleration with a primal force in which the rear breaks away in a playful but still controllable manner. The overall balance is insane. The shift mode feels better than in the Golf R (even if my statement sounds crazy) I can also take it to the Nordschleife and drive 2 laps in a row, which no other electric car can do. And the great thing is that at the touch of a button you have a quiet, comfortable family car in which everyone feels at home. If I were you, I would buy it used or lease it. I leased one through my company for 480€/month(~500$). Just go for a test drive

Great videos as always, Tom, but in my humble opinion life is already quite harsh so I prefer cars which give me extremely comfortable ride instead of harsh ride. So my eyes are set on EV/Plug-In Hybrids such as the Genesis GV70 or the possible GV80 Plug-in Hybrids. Regular Ioniq 5 is fine but I am not a fan of the look.

The nice part is that unlike the Focus RS that I traded in for it, it's a comfortable car for her to drive. Although even with all the toys turned off, she's still too nervous to drive it!

I love your car reviews. I always find them interesting, even if I'm not interested in the car. That said, this review? So sorry, but you just made me a disbeliever. This is a TERRIBLE car. It certainly has the power, yes, but unless you drive it in a straight line and hope that there are no bumps on the road, that power gets you nowhere. The suspension is terrible, I have seldom felt more unsafe in a car. Everything in it feels cheap. It's terrible. I don't know how you could even mention it in the same sentence as the absolutely excellent Porsche Taycan. Granted, they are not comparable when it comes to price, but even if you are looking for something cheaper than a Porsche, this would be a terrible choice. I drive more than 2000 kilometres through Europe with this car this year and I hated every single one of it. Even it's sister car from Kia is better. But please, if it's in your budget, get the Porsche. Or get the new electric Macan.

This is a great comment. Thanks for taking the time. I'm curious how much you went through the menu to tune the car and change its character. Also, what's your gold standard is in automobiles for comparison? Both Martin and I felt it was firm but certainly docile enough for everyday driving when everything was detuned. Even my non-car loving spouse had no issue with the ride quality. As I said, it does have more of a utilitarian cabin compared to the standard 5s but not sure I'd characterize it as cheap. I believe the driving dynamics are quite similar to the Taycan when everything is dialed in right. Bang for the buck (or Euro) it's a great driver's car. But for those with the cash, the Taycan is a lovely thing.

@@davidy932 I get it it, the YP is less expensive (especially since it's eligible for the fed tac credit). In my opinion the 5N offers a lot more for the enthusiast, even beyond the "shifts and sounds". For some, it's worth the extra cost. It can be adjusted every which way from Sunday (tech Tesla doesn't offer BTW), has traditional controls that don't smack of cost cutting and, if my experience with a M3P is any indication, a significantly better ride quality for everyday use. And the Hyundai (as popular as it is in Seattle) won't be seen 20 times on the way to Safeway. The SC network is opening up to everyone so there's that. Specs are specs and those don't tell the whole story. I see the YP as a good value but my opinion is the 5N is more soul satisfying.

$67K for 220 miles? 😂 Rather get a Model 3 Performance for $10K cheaper, 80 more miles and a faster 0-60. Plus the 3 has platinum plate underneath protecting the battery, if you run over anything. Hyundai doesn’t have it.

Model 3 is not a hatchback and is uglier inside. Also, its suspension is too harsh.

Seems like a cool car but range is terrible and EVs still feel like disposable consumables to me and i think resell values prove this. Will an EV last 10 years and 115k miles like my Honda Accord?

@jimmyh6601 you say that, but parts still need to be serviced. Motortrend has a long term EV and we're shocked by how much the service fee was. I forgot which EV they had, but moral here is just because you have an EV, doesn't mean running costs are 0

@@gladdy02 Depends on the brand. Some have "checks" at intervals just to give the dealers some business. For the Chevy Bolt I had, the first scheduled maintenance was a coolant change at 150K miles. But no O2 sensors to replace, rusted exhaust, oil changes, etc. But brake pads last much longer, and there will always be some suspension work if you live with bad roads. Otherwise an EV will last far longer than anyone will want to keep one before upgrading for the latest tech.

There are plenty of people with 100K + on their EVs. And yeah, they do require maintenance but the pack are holding up well. Durability and longevity shouldn't be an issue.

Can I just get notifications for the EXTRAORDINARILY RARE occasions when you review something OTHER than "a sports car" or "a sports car wannabe?" Geez, that is ALL you have been reviewing over most of the past year or two. Or three. Or four. Yes, you just exhibit dripping HATRED against SUV and crossover vehicles that provide comfortable rides, room for passengers and cargo, and ease of entry and exit for people with less than youthful mobility, but FOR ONCE IN YOUR CAREER, could you consider that MOST PEOPLE DON'T "PLAY" WITH CARS -- they use them for useful things, instead of PLAYING WITH TOY CARS. I feel no need to defend myself but Mini Cooper, Mazda CX-50 and 3, Chevy Equinox EV, Toyota Camry, Kia Carnival and Sorento plus Hyundai Tucson Hybrid are all vehicles I've done in the last quarter. Hatred against SUVs? Nope. I've actually defended them as being far more practical than sedans and that I understand why they're more practical than sedans. My reviews are far more pragmatic than most. I'm not perfect but I'm totally about real world use. Merry Christmas Tom!

We have a 2010 Hyundai Elantra with 90K miles that is still on its original brakes. Nothing but oil changes, new tires and wipers and a new battery in 14 years. We haven't even done a tune up.😂. I also have a 2020 Kia Optima SX, that hasn't even been taken back to the dealer once for anything. It's sad I couldn't use my 5 year bumper to bumper warranty for anything that expires in January. So far my experience has been light years ahead of the Acuras, Infiniti's and Toyotas I've owned.
