I have friends who worked on SNL 1975, it only wrapped shooting a couple weeks ago. I’d say based on that a release probably won’t be this year. It’s also very likely the release will coincide with the wrap of snl’s 50th anniversary season next year

Gonna be grim looking back at history and Denis Villeneuve not winning Picture/Director for Dune II....especially when he got snubbed for Dune, Blade Runner 2049, Arrival etc.

Honestly I think that if it was clear that it was his last film it would be his last "Dune" film it would be more obvious. I could see a Peter Jackson/"Rings" sweep but there is a lot of a third film. I prefer films like "Sacred Fig" and "Anora" but Villeneuve should be the front runner by this point.

I think Emilia Perez has more things going for it awards wise than May December, the problem with May December was that most people didn’t know how to feel about the movie by the end, and had unlikable protagonists, whereas Emilia Perez is a crowd pleasing musical.

Kinds of Kindness really does feel like it could go over like The French Dispatch, which is a shame. It would be nice if Plemons could pick up a few nominations, but not counting on it. As someone who was at the Sacred Fig premiere, I can confirm that the crowd was going absolutely bananas for a lot of Rasoulof’s political moves in the narrative. The ending shifts a bit too much tonally, but it kinda makes me think it might actually play better to an Oscar crowd that way.

I do think there is a universe where The Seed of the Sacred Fig is a Best Picture contender, but I don't think we are living in it. I think it winning a mere Special Award was hurtful, I know it's a small jury but given the momentum you would think it would've won more. Iran won't submit it. Yes I know Anatomy wasn't submitted but that was a french film half in english and the actual Palme winner AND NEON's main priority. And if there is a studio that can't really handle multiple films, it's NEON and Anora is 100% their #1. We have seen that their second and third priorities have had a rought time and they basically wait forever to release these (Portrait of a Lady on Fire and Origin for starters). I don't think Sacred Fig will have enough eyes on it, I would bet it gets like a January 2025 release.

In a funny coincidence, 9 years separated the nominations of Cruz and Mara, and 9 years have passed since Mara's win.

Don’t think of GLADIATOR II as a Top Gun, think of it as a Way of Water. Long awaited sequel to Best Picture nominee/winner, respected director, massive technical potential, plus big acting nom potential like the first Gladiator. It could be an easy fit to round out the 10 just like Avatar 2. Doesn’t have to be the best, just has to be good & make money.

Emilia Pérez is really a wild card to look out for. If Netflix plays their cards right, which I think they will, I can see it winning International Film and Original Song, and possible nominations for Director, Actress (which would be a legendary, history making nomination and / or win) and Supporting Actress. I am also a Selena stan haha but this is the first time that world has combined with this one so it's WILD but EXCITING.

I liked Anora, but in my opinion The Seed of the Sacred Fig was better, and many people I talked to thought it deserved the Palme. I think that one of the biggest advantages Anora has for the Oscars is that it is in English and American. I am not sure what Neon will do, but it is certainly not the same case as with La Chimera, which was a very good film, but obviously not an Oscar pick. Seed might even have more Oscar appeal than Anatomy of a Fall, which was also a very long film. I think and hope that they will push for both!

@@richierich7229 I agree that Anatomy of a Fall had its appeal because it was a courtroom drama with a great script and great performances. But it also was very dialogue-heavy and had a rather slow start until the trial begins, which not all audiences liked. I think The Seed of the Sacred Fig has a good backstory because of what the director and cast had to go through, it grabs you from start to finish, has great performances, a very good script and a fitting political message. So, I think that comparing both films, Seed could have a similar run to Anatomy, if Neon pushes it. But time will tell!

Emilia Perez has the benefit of being a crowd pleasing musical whereas May December was a slow burn drama with unsympathetic main characters (excluding Charles Melton) that audiences didn’t know what to make of it.

Seed of the Sacred Fig absolutely has a shot at International Feature, it is a co production with Germany and France, so one of those two could submit it for sure.

Watched Furiosa yesterday and I was a little bit disappointed specially after seeing so many people that I follow giving it 4 and 5 stars on letterboxd. It doesnt even come close to be as good as fury road. Its entertaining and the stunts are very nice but it pales in comparison with fury road. It was just an ok movie to me and at the end i gave it a 7/10 with a 6,7 average score. No way it makes it to the best picture lineup next year.
