A long time ago I heard from an actual Finnish war veteran who shot it, he called it the elephant gun. He wasn't too happy with the recoil, told he had two pairs of thick woolen socks against the shoulder to lessen the impact. Perfectly reasonable as the rifle was used as an anti-materiel weapon when its usefulness was over as an AT weapon, it wasn't just a couple of shots a day.

In Finnish Elephant Gun is used as a term for heavy impact things. For heavy weapons sure. But the sedative combo given to aggressive mental patients is also called an Elephant Gun. I believe it's known as B52 in the English slang for medical personell. Nice info, I just wanted to give a heads up to people Googling this and getting confused.

Reminds me when I read the gun inventors memoirs (Aimo Lahti) when he was visiting the frontlines during the war and they encountered destroyed Soviet tank, I can't recall was it T 26 or BT 7, but it was shot on front of the turret with that rifle and the round went straight through, hit the gunner on head and exited from the back of the turret. The inventor peeked inside of the turret hatch and it was just a red mess. Really tells how powerful these were back in the day.

I had a buddy, retired Air Force, bachelor, who was a Class III collector. He had a Lahti set up on his living room coffee table, as a conversation piece. He had made a loading press for the 20mm round. Every so often, we would go shoot that beast (and other toys) at a “range” another buddy had on his ranch, in Eastern New Mexico. We put some Tannerite in an old heavy refrigerator from the early 1950s. That Lahti was terrible to shoot. The recoil felt like it would pick you up and wave you like a flag. Finns used the Lahti L-39 against soviet tanks and for anti-air in ww2, it's not meant against soft targets... It couldn't take out heavier tanks like T-34, but smaller ones it could and other armoured vehicles. It's too big for one man, weights around 50kg and is well over 2 meters tall, it was towed on the firing spot where a crew then deployed it. It's effective for sure, but a bit clumsy to use.

We must remember that its a 20mm _Canon_ round, and not a machine gun or rifle round. Canon rounds are going to be pretty hard to stop, even by a tank!! Good video, I knew it was going to pass through everything, especially as it was 20mm AP.
@YouTube.Is.Run.By.Terrorists2 ай бұрын
Cannon* Cannon Noun: 1.) a large, heavy piece of artillery, typically mounted on wheels, formerly used in warfare. 2.) an automatic heavy gun that fires shells from an aircraft or tank. Artillery Noun: 1.) large-caliber guns used in warfare on land. 1-1/2.) Large-caliber artillery is defined by the United Nations Register of Conventional Arms (UNROCA) as guns, howitzers, or artillery pieces with a caliber of 76.2 mm (3.00 in) or larger. Gun Noun: a weapon incorporating a metal tube from which bullets, shells, or other missiles are propelled by explosive force, typically making a characteristic loud, sharp noise. This 20mm, man portable, shoulder fired* weapon does not meat the projectile size requirements set by UNROCA to be considered artillery, therefore it does not meet the definition of "cannon." Not artillery/not vehicle mounted = not a cannon. Caliber size is not the only deciding factor as to whether or not a gun is classified as a "cannon." *shoulder-fired: a weapon small enough to be held on a person's shoulder and fired. (Not necessarily from a standing position, and not necessarily from the shooters shoulder.) TLDR: it *is* a rifle, and if it were fully automatic, it would be a machine gun. The fact is, besides the energy difference from caliber to caliber, all modern guns work on the same basic concept. The incessant need to categorize and subcategorize every tweak/modification that occurs on a given platform has muddled the waters when it comes to how we define certain weapons. (A similar example: what's the difference between a DMR and a battle rifle? The role they play in the unit they are in. If a firearm ticks all the boxes to make for a good battle rifle then it has all the exact same characteristics as a DMR: a full caliber cartridge that is capable of delivering more power at-range than an intermediate cartridge, a full length barrel to take advantage of the projectiles terminal ballistics, a low power/LPVO optic, and... that's it. They could both be modified from M-4/AR-15 -- both starting out life as an "AR" -- before both receiving the same *very minor* upgrades, and then one becomes a DMR while the other is called a battle rifle. Caliber alone makes a weapon, not.)

You should try using square style buckets of water instead of round buckets. Water has a high enough surface tension, hitting a round wall is probably more prone to deflect the bullets out of the planned trajectory. Obviously you'd still be dealing with a bullet squirrelling through water. But hitting a flat surface will cause less impact on the trajectory. EDIT: I love your style of research and destruction btw!

My grandfathers neighbour, told me about one occasion when he was using this Lahti 20 mm. He fought in the region of Finnish Lapland, Salla/Märkäjärvi. He told me and my uncle, about one special occasions that he actually regretted that it ever happened. He stood as a guard, on a trench line and they had this gun locked and loaded and ready to be used. The Soviets had their dug outs only about some 100 to 200 meters away. He said that he could clearly see the guard that the Soviets had on their side, calmly just crawl up from their trench systems and take some steps away, and start to taking off his trousers, because he needed to release himself (number two). He said that he could not understand why he was so relaxed and un bothered. The soldier then sat down leaning against one of them trees near by. He was to release himself. He said that he could not let that happen, so he took aim at his lower half, with his Lahti 20 mm. Well, he shot that man basically in 1/2, when that poor man stood leaning against that tree, releasing himself. He also said that they normally would not open fire, because the Soviets always started to shoot with their artillery systems, in anger afterwards and the Finnish artillery men, didn't have so much shells that they just "randomly" could shoot back at them, if there wasn'tt any major breakthrough going on. But he said that he often thinks about that man, and that it was the only time when he felt bad afterwards. This man was also part of them Long Range Sissi skiing troops. Another thing that happened was when they where deep in Soviet territory, doing reconnaissance. They where skiing back to Finland again and it was freezing cold, when they all of a sudden found a Sauna and some smaller hut, in the middle of nowhere. As every Finn they could not resist that Sauna, so they decided to warm that sauna up, and to take a bath. They had been on that reconnaissance trip for almost two weeks at this point,so they felt that they must clean themselves a little bit. They had two guards set up and the rest of the men started to enjoy themselves in the sauna. Some time later, they got an alarm and the guards came to them and said thar the Soviets where on their trail, and they cc me skiing these same tracks. They didn't have time to take clothes on them, so they placed themselves to these small dugouts in the snow that they alr8had prepared earlier. They opened fire and took out several aof these enemy soldiers and it ended up with these Soviets retreating. They then took all them clothes on them and started to continue their way, very quickly back to Finland.. They thought about that attack later on, and said that what a sight that must have been. Finnish soldiers fought naked now, and in the middle of the winter aswell 😂😂😂... They laughed thinking about what these poor surviving soldiers had to write down in their reports about what really had happen... 😂😂😂

God those rounds where devastating. People wonder why I often volunteer to prove the "Heavy Sniper" role has potential and after this video I'm convinced it has a part to play in modern warfare. Nothing we have today would be able to manufactured as cheaply and as readily as a nato 20mm rifle that was designed to hit lightly armoured vehicles and heavily armoured infantry from a counseled position quite like a anti-material or "Heavy Sniper" can. I would again happily volunteer to prove the concept has weight behind it and would actually work today so it could be easily proven or disproven depending on the results we gotten from the trials.
