The teeth are probably work hardened after many years of pressure from the train. That's a lot of weight on the teeth year after year.

I was having a similar thought. Hardening up on the teeth versus the base from years of stress.

Cog and rack teeth are typically hardened. The lower portion most likely not.

The faster the rifling twist, the deeper AP will penetrate in steel. For the 5.56, the 1-7 M16A2 will penetrate deeper than the 1-12 M16A1 using the same ammo.

The ex and I were on the 1st ride of one of the trains, and it got stuck half way up. The other had to be emptied, then sent up to get us, then back down. We never made it to the top. They shut it down again for the rest of the day. There was a fire in another state at the time that had smoked up the lower atmosphere, and we were told that we didn't miss any views by others that had made it. They said there was a lot of construction at the top too that kinda spoiled it.

It may have been said somewhere in the comments, but some of the force is being used to push the rail instead of penetating the rail since it is able to slide. If the rail was secured to the table, the results may be slightly different.

For the folks mentioning the audio issue, methinks you have one of your audio cables messed up more likely than your camera having an issue. If you use anything that has RCA cables or any other cables that have individual left & right audio wires/cables, you likely have them reversed, so when the mic records something on the left hand side of the screen it plays through the right speaker. Alternatively, if you can't figure it out, most editing software can reverse your audio channels to move them to the correct sides in each one. While this sounds like a real nitpick, it is surprisingly distracting. It could even be that the mic just needs to be rotated to a different orientation, depending on the microphone you are using.

On the last shot with the '06, check the top of the cog, to me it had a slight arch to it where the rest are flat. The first shot was lower into the body of the steel and the other 3 were in the cog itself, just a thought to why the back isn't bulged and the steel was not anchored down, could loose some energy that way, but still a great experiment.

It's not uncommon to harden just part of a metal part. We did that at John Deere when I worked there on the crank shafts. Just about all car engines have that sort of thing in them, at least up until the 2000s. That's when I left the engine building industry. Nice video, but you should have held to rail in place so that none of the energy would get lost to movement. I'd like to see what that last shot would do on the tooth of the rail.

It didn't break, it was replaced BEFORE it broke. That's how you keep something like a cog railway safe... by replacing components before they break. It also has two cog tracks, in case one of them does have a failure.
