i owned the 50W 800 (no "fx loop"), I was unsatisfied when chasing Hendrix and SRV quasi-clean tone. I don't know if I tried the Low input, and I failed to swap tube 1 to a lower-gain tube. If I had it today, I'd also want to put an "fx loop" in it instead of selling it.

Excellent comparison sir! The previous (longer) video you did on the mini JCM 800 was a key factor in my decision to buy the SC20H, which I REALLY like. From this video I still think the mini JCM is the best for med to high gain rock, while the Plexi really excels in the low-med gain. I have put the Plexi on the top of my wish list! The prices here in Canada are pretty high ($1,500 plus tax, lots of tax) which curbs frequent buying. It's been a while since I've been excited about new amplifiers but the Marshall Studio series is amazing!

I’ve had the mini Jubilee with the matching 2x12 vertical cab for over a year now. Love it. Tried it through my recto 2x12 as well and it does sound quite different. Plenty loud enough for small to mid size gigs. The fixed bias on the Jubilee is nice for a no fussing around. Swapped out the stock tubes with EH el34s and the 12ax7s. Made a big difference too. Great amp!

The mini JCM 800 would be my choice. The mini Jubilee is arguably more flexible and versatile but the distorted sound is more fizzy and the clean sound a bit thin. The mini Plexi may be the best sounding of the three if you can crank it, but for my purposes, especially if I buy a smaller amp like this, a master volume is a must.

I agree that the Jubilee is fizzy...probably due to clipping diodes...hence, I don't really care for it. The Plexi is by far the most organic-sounding. The JCM800 is really good, but I think the Plexi edges it out. All 3 are pretty cool though!

@@kovroberto It's definately loud enough for small Gigs and rehearsal (and you can always mic the AMP if needed) I play it on low wattage setting at rehearsal. It works fine. One word though, it's mostly not a super clean amp. You can get it pretty clean when you turn it down but even on clean channel it usually has a little bit of breakup when master is up (at least with humbuckers, i find). Which i like.

Thanks for reviewing this series of Marshall amp heads, I sold my JCM 800 Lead Series 50 watt 2205 a few years back along with 4x12 1960 cab, a total workhorse rig for my younger days of the live band club days, very dependable rig, very loud, and nice tonal combinations with foot-switchable channels and effects loop, but felt like it needed a younger dude to keep it on the road so I sold the rig. I had purchased an MG100DFX Combo a few years beforehand so I was basically using that set up for smaller live gigs, it comes close to the tones but not exact, so your review is helpful and I always like the Plexi tone as well, the Plexi might be a winner for the home studio! Maybe a word of advice to younger players that these amps take time to really understand the range of tones and how to best use within what you are looking to accomplish, this point was brought up in the video, so consider it before purchasing and allow time and experimentation once in your hands! Ciao, ALDO

This video is so good. I've got a big collection of vintage Fenders and some Vox in my studio and need something for when bands who need a little more gain come in, bit hopefully something that doesn't feel wildly out of place amongst the vintage gear here. So I've been trying to educate myself on Marshall stuff, and know I don't need much volume, but most of what I find is people recommending 2204s because they're 50 watts, so at least less crazy than 100. I see older Marshalls that are way out of my price range but still don't know confidently which is the right choice. This video sold me on the plexi, not to mention I hadn't found that Marshall was already making a current, low wattage version like this, so it'll probably be my pick. The 800 was great for the extra high gain sounds but after hearing the SV here I feel like I understand what people are into about vintage Marshalls. Thank you!

Thanks for making this video and comparing these three 20 watt platforms. My take away... the jubilee is not to my liking and performed last in all formats ( a bit too fizzy). The JCM800 (sc) really excelled in higher gain - the focus and detail really jumped out to me in that last take. The plexi (studio vintage) really surprised me in that it handled everything very well... I was surprised it handled higher gain as well as it did... certainly a little looser sounding with a slight lack of focus. I am between the plexi and 800... thinking of ordering both and keeping the winner but... I fear that may not be easily determined.

Great review ! I've owned the mini Plexi for just over a year (got it in late April 2019), used it on dozens of gigs (recorded a bit with it too) and it's my favorite amp to date. Lead tone with a boost and a bit of delay is instant George Lynch on Back For The Attack/Wicked Sensation...one of the best rock lead tones ever in my book. Monster amp, especially at the price (IF you're in Europe). I'm actually considering adding the 2525H to the stable(once gigging resumes) for additional flexibility, and for going stereo, which I do on bigger stages. I definitely loved the 2555x I tested but couldn't justify the 1300€ asked while I also have a DSL100, but for 750€ ? Hell yeah. Especially when these are feather-light, which is very nice for load-in/load-out. Marshall made a killing with these amps, at the price point (again, IF you're in Europe) I can't see anything that's even close to THAT. Especially if that's the kind of tones you're looking at.

Yeah, Origin combo 20 cranked plus with an overdrive booster would be a great review

I still can’t decide if I should upgrade to one of these from the origin 50 head. I really like it, but I would like to own a proper made in UK Marshall. Great demo.

Which attenuator do you use? I love my jcm800 studio. It’s super easy to dial in but I bet it sounds a hell of a lot better being able to crank it

Hell yea. I got the plexi and run it to 11.... Kind of took the Edward path and got a variable transformer. Run the amp on full at 60 volts. Hell my cat can sleep in front of it and still screams

Thanks for the comments about the volume. I was hoping the 5 watt mode would be good at lower volumes, but it sounds like these amps aren't for me.

I went and bought the Jubilee along with the matching 2x12 silver cab 4 years ago and although I love it, I would gladly trade it for the plexi equivalent.

From the perspective of a metal guy, the JCM800 20 has a bit more gain than the full size 2203, which is great, but that mini silver jubilee is absolutely killer and probably the better choice

Surprisingly, I liked the Jubilee the best. Had the most clarity and flexibility. Pair it with a TS and it covers all Rock bases.

Marshall Marshall Marshall (in the voice of Eve Plumb). An Orange sounds like an orange! Marshall sounds like a Marshall! The snozzberries taste like snozzberries 🤗! Had these all been 100 Watt versions that would have been a real vermicious knid for the SPL meter
