Why isn’t there a half year course in high school to cover budgeting, credit card and interest, college loans - basic survival skills?
@janebaker4912
@janebaker4912 2 жыл бұрын
Two reasons. 1. Parents responsibility to teach it. 2. Teaching a 16 year old about mortgages or savings... It doesn't stick cos it's not relivent yet
@Daphattack
@Daphattack 2 жыл бұрын
@@janebaker4912 we still need to teach this. I learned a lot things in high school that were not relevant yet and later on they were. This is a class that needs to start in elementary school, again in middle and again in High School. Especially about Student Loans.
@MrsEJV
@MrsEJV 2 жыл бұрын
@@janebaker4912 But reality is many parents don’t teach it because they don’t live it. I’m not suggesting covering mortgages, investments, etc. But I am all for teaching how to make a budget, the sink hole of college loans, how interest keeps accruing, what co-signing means, and for God’s sake, how to responsibly use a credit card. First day on campus credit cards are being handed out like candy. These kids have run up thousands in debt like it’s play money. I’ve known of students who committed suicide because they realized how in debt they were too late and saw (to them) no way out. 16 is too LATE to teach saving. My grandchildren get allowances. A bit is put aside for saving, a bit for sharing and a bit for spending. They are nine and seven. They comprehend one dollar bills better than a $5 or $10. When I take them to dinner they get money and have to budget. Never the same amount each time so they have to think. Last week they opted for large fries so had ice water instead of chocolate milk. They were fine because it was their decision.They totally understand “we don’t have enough dollar bills to do/get that right now”. We refuse to be enablers. Wish us luck!
@joyaustin6581

It’s basic math. If you have $5 and something costs $6. You don’t have enough money. Determining interest is basic math. Entitlement is learned at home

Because we assume you have common sense. Math skills of an elementary child. Not saying it wouldnt be interesting to have maybe a few hours of it in the last year,, but you do not need half a year, in that case , you re not mature enough to graduate yet!

Good episode, and I am glad Spencer saw the light and turned his life around. However, it seems to me his Mom and Grandma were ENTIRELY to blame for Spencer becoming a Princess in the first place! They literally let that boy get away with murder. If they had been a lot more strict and showed him some tough love in his teenage years, Spencer would have turned out more balanced.

To call the credit card companies that keep extending this kid credit “dumb” is far too generous to an essentially predatory business. They do it because they know that they’re more likely to make a profit (from interest, often being extracted from family members or partners) than they are to realize a loss (which only happens if the kid declares bankruptcy, which is heavily stigmatized and not that common, or a consumer proposal, which is also a bit stigmatizing, not terribly common, and not as much of a loss for the credit card company).

My dad was in my and my siblings' lives and never taught us anything about allowances or budgeting or finance. He did it all silently to keep the roof over our heads and all of us fed but zero knowledge was imparted. Unfortunately just having a dad present isn't enough - they have to be financially literate themselves and they have to devote the effort to teach their children.

okay, rule number 1 in the adult world: A career is a job, but a job is not a career. There is no law in the world that demands you to stay in only one profession your whole life. A job is something you do to earn money so you can eat and have a home for the next day. A career is what you love. I'm not saying sell yourself into a crap payed job in an abusive environment, but sometimes you have to suck up your pride, smile and say "Hey, welcome to McDonalds. What would you like to order today?" Remember, it's just a bump on the way, not a full stop unless you want it to be.

What has happened to this generation? Back in 1970s when I grew up, at 21 you would be completing an apprenticeship and starting to earn a man’s wage. Today they are acting like children with all the time in the world, as they find themselves. More young should be going into apprenticeships to learn a trade, rather than spending 3 years at university taking a useless degree in communications and drama. After gaining such a degree that a domestic pet could pass, they are crippled financially with 6 figure student loans, In London, plumbers earn £300k salaries. This is something students with degrees in fluff can only dream off. Spencer needs a dad to guide him on being a man.
