How do you get Rome: Total War not to lag on new PCs? I thought it impossible...

It really is a mystery. Some players, on Windows 10, get perfect performance right on launch. Others need to test out different resolutions, disabling shadows, avoiding using flaming arrows etc. You can try running the game as administrator, lowering unit size, or run it in window mode

@@RobertusMaximus I think its for "balance" and to solidify that the rebels are meant to be a second rate faction comprising only that: poor rebels, unkempt deserters, and thieving mercenary bands. At the beginning their units are comparable to any other faction's and this is because they still have settlements and represent actual peoples/city states. But as time goes on the rebel faction actually is just representing normal rebels and thieves and thus it makes sense for them to still have weaker troops, as they can't afford to have higher end equipment. Though it would be nice to have a rebel faction with some actual power to them. Up the spawn rates, up the troop counts in spawns, every rebel city starts with at least double the garrison as before, and hell maybe even somehow make their economy not a total mess. Though that last part doesn't matter too much so long as they increase spawn rates.

I conquered most of the known world as Germania. Just Egypt was able to resist because of how far away they were and how powerful they had already become. It got to a point where we were raising armies and throwing them at each other just to get destroyed and replaced by another new army. It was a bloody stalemate

You have to defeat Egypt as early as possible, otherwise it becomes very hard. My favorite tactic is conquering Alexandria, Memphis and Thebes and then recruiting armies from there

I enjoyed Pontus as well. I conquered every other faction in the Middle East just to keep The Seleucid Empire. Only for them to attack me. So I stomped them into the mud. Also as Gremania Chosen Axe men were more powerful than the berserkers. I stomped three armies in a row with just a army of Chosen Axe Men. No General nothing but them. I stomped. Also they are cheaper can be recruited from any level three Barracks and only one turn for recruitment.

That's where the name "Total War" comes from. So I don't bother with diplomacy other than trade rights and squeezing money from AI by selling them world maps. In Medieval 2 I just fight multiple enemies at once, because everybody has chronic backstab disorder and even great chivalry reputation doesn't help.

Actually It's probably a reference to how the Germanics had a love for spears. Apparently Odin/Wodan used a spear so the spear was a much more respected weapon for them than it was for many other nations.

I’ll be entirely honest, playing as Thrace has been a blast so far. In the beginning I use my diplomats to offer up trade rights, alliances, and map information all for 3,000 denarri each deal with each and every faction. I knew of how powerful the Romans were, so I sent a daring military expedition to Illyria and Epirus, and was able to decimate the infant Brutii colonies and got filthy rich, because of my actions; the Roman expansion was permanently stalled to where they only wanted to expand as far as Thermon. Fast forward to 173 B.C.E., I had conquered the Britannia’s Isles (including Ireland), I am the ruler of all of the Black Sea, conquered all of Anatolia (Turkey), conducting beach assaults upon Macedon-Greece, and take away Cyprus, Tarsus, and Antioch from Ptolemy-Egypt.

I love Parthia, and so when I decided to mix it up as them and do a Migrant campaign, I booted Thrace out and settled in Northern Macedonia. Cause gotta face them pikes as ponies I guess. PS: that actually was my favorite campaign I've played in any total war game, in huge part to, despite having been allies since I settled up in Thrace, Greece betrayed me the second we bordered. And what followed what an absolutely massive war that had me get more attached to a general than I ever have in a total war game, and was genuinely sad when he died of old age the turn before the siege of Sparta

Once an enemy has damaged the walls I never repair them, then in subsequent sieges they just drop all equipment and rush the entrance. Well two archers on each sides, and if you have them a phallanx just away from the entrance, and you literally never lose. Same with river defences, although siege engines really are a pain.

The Macedonian faction has the logo of the spartans which means Λακεδαιμονα (Σπαρτη-Sparta) in greek . That's why their shields had the letter L or Λ... in greek😁.

@Ibrahim Awad I haven't played any more recent Total War games than Medieval 2 (played Med 1, Rome 1, Med 2 and a demo for Empire I think) and Rome 1 is my favourite of those, followed by Med 2. I did admittedly give up after Med 2, the ones following Shogun 2 (which I think looked good, but didn't really capture me enough to buy it) started to lose what made the series great. Diplomacy is one of the problems in the series, it's not very in depth and whether due to a bug or design it is basically meaningless as it almost seems hard coded for everyone to hate you and you will go to war with basically everyone over the course of a campaign whether you choose to or not ("allies" will often back stab you eventually) The Total War AI is bad enough across the series that it is basically a meme at this point. Rome 1 is no different, the battlefield AI is basically brain dead, it can throw away generals, poor use of phalanxes, and it's even worse in city sieges, especially attacking cities. Also Med 2 has great music, but Rome 1 has the best music in my ears, although not historical at all. Rome 1's combat is often very fast paced, especially when cavalry is involved. Imagine the cavalry from Med 2, except with a slightly less powerful charge, but you can charge 2 metres and get the bonus for it. Phalanxes are also hilarious when defending a city or bridge, even militia hoplites (the worse phalanx in the game) can hold it's own at a choke point against decent enemy infantry and cavalry. Under prolonged fighting they will eventually flee, but that's when you have another phalanx of Spartan hoplites (arguably best unit in the game) behind them. HoI definitely wins in terms of diplomacy (although I've heard other Paradox games are better than HoI in that area), AI and overall war strategy. However I feel like Rome 1 still has it's place with the very fun (if often one sided) battles.

Am currently playing the Julii long campaign Max/Max and am in a near stalemate fighting Gaul, Spain, Germania, Dacia and Briton. Finances are shit for various reasons and it's all i can do to deal with the attrition amongst the troops. Winning strings of battle but still on the back foot. Man, i love the challenge.

Playing a game as Parthia after Egypt steamrolled the Selucids consisted of waiting for them to lay siege - setting their ram on fire, battering down my own walls from the inside with catapults to destroy their ladders - then waiting for the timer to run out. Worked like a charm.
