Thank you @Paleostories_ ! I dare not accept that accolade, but I am absolutely delighted that there are people like you who enjoy the scientific part as well, since there are many who would prefer to look at just the model/ toy. I think knowing a bit more about the animal or science behind helps us appreciate the models better and enjoy them just a bit more! When it was being said that PNSO was doing only scaly dinosaurs some speculated it was because it couldn't do feathers well. Yutyrannus proved otherwise, and since that time I was just waiting for them to get to their maniraptorans, which I would have bet would have been Velociraptor. So this one came as a totally surprising and pleasant shock! 😁 Now I'm just waiting to see what they do with Velociraptor or Deinonychus. It will be a bomb (in a good way lol!).

They definitely are. I only hope they keep up their standards. We've seen other frontrunners run out of steam and fall by the wayside over the years, and I hope that this isn't going to be the case. The good thing is that they are slowing the pace of new offerings, so that gives them more time to plan and execute, and us to save up! 😪

Certainly one of PNSO's best figures! Absolutely stunning! They need to continue to give their dinos more striking yet natural looking color schemes, just like this Deinocheirus.

I personally love every single color choice PNSO gives for there figures, i think they are all very perfect, but this is just too good! I don’t understand why people complain about PNSO’s choice of colors for most of there animals, i mean to be fair we have real no clue what they looked like, so why complain?
@venator72512 жыл бұрын
@@paleostories_7839 I get you and I do agree that no color choice of theirs have been bad. But I personally do wish more striking color schemes, especially for Sauropods. They almost always are brown or grey. But of course this is my opinion only :)

@VENATOR For sure! This really proves it's a matter of choice, not ability for them to do colour schemes and non-scaly textures. Imagine what they will give us when they finally get to Velociraptor and Deinonychus!
@DinosDragons2 жыл бұрын
@Paleostories_ I think one issue most people have is that PNSO seems to insist on the same old striped pattern, like for almost every animal. Indeed even the colour schemes are the same. The pain is increased knowing that PNSO is well capable of other ideas such as we've seen in the Miragaia and the various hadrosaurs. And now of course, this! And if you don't live in Asia, then all this really adds up. Basically the middlemen, shipping, and inflation has taken such a toll and driven prices up so high that they are almost priced to perfection; nothing less seems acceptable when you've put in a lot of your disposable income into one model, often sneaking behind your wife's/ girlfriend's back to do so 🤣🤣 Personally, I'm happy as long as the sculpts are of their usual standard, their paint applications are good (regardless of colour scheme or pattern) and they adhere to scientific accuracy as much as possible 🙂

I've been eagerly awaiting you to get your hands on this since it was announced! Echoing what others have said, your reviews are hands down the most grounded and informative on KZbin - when you praise a figure, I KNOW it's going to be good! Just a tidbit: Mark Witton's blog on body heat and integument is still quite controversial. The shaggy coat of camels for example actually keeps them cool. (I believe I may have read something similar for ostriches too). Considering Deinocheirus may have been slow moving and spent a lot of time wading, it seems reasonable that feathers would not be an issue. The air sac system in theropods and sauropods seems like it would regulate body heat better vs mammals?
@DinosDragons2 жыл бұрын
Thank you @Zac ! I am very happy there are people like you who like that side of my videos. I really didn't want to just do a video showing a toy without sharing stuff about it, as I think it helps us appreciate what we have even more. And thank you for the input on Dr Witton's article! Yes indeed, I often point people to his articles because he does collate various sources and presents them in a way I think most people can understand. What I often do is go to his individually cited references, and then read those articles myself. But this topic was really big, and I have to say the further down the rabbit hole I got the more tempted I was to have 30min of video just on this topic, which would bore most people to tears 😃 Good point on the camels. Actually I seem to recall someone writing a similar thing regarding why would banthas be shaggy on Tatooine? The air sac system would indeed regulate heat well, but only if a full shaggy coat doesn't negate whatever benefits that imbues. I'll definitely continue to educate myself more on this; thanks for the idea! 😁

Now this, I am especially excited for a prestige level Deinocheirus. The look is consistent with an animal living in a dry floodplain area. The shaggy integument is reminiscent of an ostrich, with bare skin beneath to provide cooling while the feathers acting like a feathered poncho or serape while it stalked the wetlands like a gargantuan heron. I do suspect the narrower ribcage and pelvis does suggest a omnivorous diet. Water vegetation likely was the majority of the diet but hunting fish, mammals, other dinosaurs, and perhaps even a nest raider during the breeding season. What a marvelous way to wind down 2022.

Yeah on one hand I'm almost sad that PNSO probably won't be giving us anymore, after all it _is_ two more months to year's end! On the other hand, what a way for them to close the year out on. since the yutyrannus reveal i always wanted to see a more closer related to birds dinosaur from pnso in 1:35 scale and we got it! so beautiful the way they mix the naked and feathered parts together they feel so natural, they remind me a lot of a ratite especially from the inside of the wings where you can see the shape of the arm just like with ratites where under the wing you can see their naked arm and the style of the feathers also kinda reminds me of an ostrich especially the wing feathers the color choice speaks for itself pnso really improves, especially with big herbivores who due to their size and since as big animals they are not really that fast and especially deinocheirus here, relies on their defense anyway, have no need to be camouflaged like the predators who are more plain colored to match the environment this figure is really special and i cant wait to get it and pose it with my other favourite pnso figure, chuanzi the tarbosaurus, as two animals who lived together...im looking forward to more nemegt formation fauna like therizinosaurus, saurolophus or even a nemegtosaurus
@DinosDragons2 жыл бұрын
Me too! I know before Yutyrannus, people were saying the reason PNSO sticks to scaly dinosaurs was because it couldn't do feathers well, but that proved the naysayers wrong. So I've been wondering which was the next feathery dinosaur PNSO would get to doing. I thought it would be Velociraptor but I was wrong, it's this big bird dinosaur! Indeed this one is really special, and it's good PNSO does such high quality dinosaurs that we actually get interested to really learn about not just it, but flesh out various prehistoric formations. Having more of the Nemegt Fomration would be excellent since we already have the complementary Tarbosaurus, but as a sauropod lover I'm hoping for a 1:35 Nemegtosaurus! It would be very speculative, but PNSO has now set a precedent for even more fragmentary remains haven't they! 😉

Safari makes children's toys, realism isn't their aim. They're also much cheaper.
@paleostories_78392 жыл бұрын
@@BananaCake26 not entirely true, safari’s prehistoric world line has some of the most accurate, up to date figures that you can get, and price speaks for many people, so i would say that safari ltd is both for children and adults, especially if your aiming towards doug watson’s sculptures!
@BananaCake262 жыл бұрын
@@paleostories_7839 Yes, the bauplan/anatomy of Safari figures can be accurate. But the detail of the sculpt and paint usually isn't very high and not comparable to PNSO, because they still need to appeal to children and keep the price low. More detail = much higher price.
@DinosDragons2 жыл бұрын
@Shaine White To be fair, we're talking about a model that came out in 2017, so companies have had a good 7 years to refine their sculpting and painting processes.😊 I would say the Safari has the unique characteristic features of Deinocheirus correct, and at that time was probably the best you could get. But yes, if you don't already have one, _this_ would be the one to get while it's still hot off the printing presses, and you want to original paint application and not the falloff you can expect in later production runs.
@DinosDragons2 жыл бұрын
@BananaCake26 In fairness, Safari does make toys and price them at a range most parents could afford to buy, but they also have very high standards trying to follow anatomical reconstructions of the animals they make. So I believe realism is also important to them. 😁Particularly if you look at Doug Watson's work, you can see that he's certainly paid a lot of attention to the anatomy. I understand he also reads relevant papers before each sculpt, and for the affordable price, it would certainly be something to consider if you can't or are unable to get a PNSO. They are much cheaper because sadly if you are in the West, you have to pay shipping and middleman charges. In China they are actually very affordable, though of course still more expensive than the Safaris because of the added detail and paint application. I've long lamented that the one thing letting companies like Safari and CollectA down is their pressure to keep within a priced bracket, and the main cost cut will be paint application. I once tried to buy a dinosaur for a friend in the US, and even though the model itself was cheap, the shipping cost more than that, so that in the end, I told him he was far better off getting it from AMZN.

It sure is (was?) hip to depict many (big) dinosaurs with a coat of feathers/fluff, and it certainly is beautifully done on this figure, but I somehow doubt this rather big animal would have had such a covering of feathery integument, given what Mark Witton has to say in his article. Also, although I like this PNSO model very much, I think I'll wait with acquiring it until some more evidence has been collected about this animal.

Why do I have the feeling you passed on the Sinopliosaurus 😂 The flipside with that is if you were to wait for more evidence for this or many other dinosaurs, then you likely won't be buying very many figures. My issue - as with many current reconstructions - is with the over-reliance on using specific families of birds as models for the reconstructing of soft tissue and integuments. Here, you can really get the sense that they were looking at turkeys and chickens or perhaps the cassowary for the skin along the neck - it's not so much that it's blue, but that they've given it this very scale-free, think-skinned, wrinkly look you'd expect from one of those birds. But while all birds are dinosaurs, it's very important to remember that not all dinosaurs - in fact MOST dinosaurs - were not birds. Birds represent one very specialized branch of theropods that split off from the non-avian ancestors way back in the Jurassic, yet people constantly lean on them as 1:1 translations for how a dinosaur should look, and that is a mistake. While, yes, modern birds - the ones that lack feathers on their necks - DO have that type of skin, it's very important to realize that we have good evidence in the fossil record for scaly skin on the neck of many theropods, INCLUDING those with feathers. The loss of scales elsewhere on the body seems to actually be unique to aves in particular - to birds - and so far, there's no good evidence for this type of non-scaled skin on the torso, neck or tail of even the feathered non-avian dinosaurs. We have, for instance, extensive skin impressions from Carnotaurus - we have several for large Tyrannosaurids - including from the neck region - and in each case you see *scales*. Just an important realization to make - that despite the currently fashionable trend of "birdifying" every dinosaur taxa under the sun, there ARE key differences between birds and non-avian theropods, and it doesn't make you "behind the times" or "backwards thinking" to simply face that fact. It's an overly liberal application of the "birds are dinosaurs, so dinosaurs must look like birds" mantra of late. We get it. They ARE dinosaurs. There's no question about that. But then, a platypus and other monotremes are mammals but have DISTINCT differences from the rest of the mammalian lineage. We're easily fooled into thinking like this because birds are SO numerous - over 10,000 living species today - and all derived from the same common ancestors that traits like non-scaled skin on the body and neck become, in our minds, what their closest relatives should be like, too. But ignoring the evidence isn't good science. It's actually quite poor science. And HAVING scales does not make non-avian dinosaurs any more "primitive" or any less "advanced". It's just a different skin type. Now that's not to say that non-avian dinosaurs COULDN'T have had that sort of turkey-neck skin but SO FAR, evidence for non-avian dinosaur skin types is overwhelmingly in favor of scaled torsos, necks and tails as well as legs and feet EVEN THOUGH we also know that many had feathers as well. Feathers and scaled skin CAN exist on the same part of the body - they just happen not to for ONE particular (highly specialized) lineage of dinosaurs - the birds. Birds ALSO lost their grasping hands and long bony tails - but you wouldn't go and reconstruct a non-avian theropod without hands or a tail. I'd just err on the side of caution for any given genus/species until proven otherwise.

Thank you for another considered comment! Well as a paleontologist, I'm sure you have seen how the pendulum does swing from one extreme to another, and the middle ground is seldom sales- or newsworthy. Either that, or it's so easy to extrapolate something into its natural conclusion, or what _seems_ like a natural conclusion, without considering that that 'natural' conclusion might not be a correct inference. But once an idea has caught on, it becomes sticky. Especially for something hot and sexy like dinosaurs, I've noticed how one new fact can quickly be seized upon, and once ingrained in the cultural consciousness, it just grows and takes on a life of its own. If you've seen All Yesterdays, you can see how some ideas quickly spread exponentially, and one suggestion today becomes gospel fact the next in a fit of irrational exuberance. The truth probably is someone in the middle, but while scientifically sound to err on the side of caution, that's not something that can take hold easily.
