Call of Duty: Vanguard Review | World War Woke

"Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past". Vanguard is a masterclass in both historical revisionism, and being a professionally bad game. Every year this franchise comes around and I love to hate, it is essentially a guilty pleasure of mine. This year it made me sick-up a bit in my mouth. You know those schools that get covertly infiltrated by activists, who then promptly start to change the school syllabus to service a particular agenda? Well if you do, then Vanguard should feel comfortably familiar.

Compared to this crackpot of a game Vanguard, World at War made you experience the second world war the way it should be: gruesome, brutal, the story of humanity hell bent on killing each other. From burning Japanese alive with a flamethrower, watching your squadmate's throat get slitted in front of you, to the Nazis murdering survivors in a fountain in Stalingrad and the vengeance of the Red Army against any Nazi they see. Perhaps that's what made World at War so good: it makes you see and commit questionable actions to make you understand that war is bad and we should do everything to stop it. Not this kind of hodgepodge pushing an agenda no worse than the extremes on the other side.

@@hydrolox3953 Er, America did not do a majority of the fighting on the Western front. First off they only really showed up in 1944 and their airforce 43. Secondly DDAY was entirely planned by the British commonwealth, all the logistics/artillery/air support/naval operations was British commonwealth. 3/5 beaches were taken by British commonwealth and Omaha wasnt any harder than any other beach. DDAY didn’t even require the US to be there - that was a later plan, there were 124 commonwealth divisions ready the two who took Omaha + Utah weren’t “needed” so to speak. The U.K. discounting colonies and lend lease produced 3x as many tanks - and generally better tanks, 2x as many planes - and the spitfire was year on year the fastest piston engines fighter of the war until the P-47M in 1945 - and 4x the naval vessels. No, I’m not discounting the American contribution, but it was just that, a contribution. The view the British were a minor underdog who bravely stood against a massive Nazi reich is false - and painted by the British press after the war. The U.K. was the largest empire and combined economy and manufacturing base in the entire world - the U.K. outproduced Germany to such an extent there was zero hope of Germany winning after 1940. The Manhattan project (the research portion) was almost entirely done by the U.K. (American industry was crucial to manufacture the entire bomb - but the U.K. basically wrote the “instructions”. It was estimated enough atomb bombs would be ready using Belgian Congo uranium by the 1947 to defeat the Nazis. As I said the British manufacturing base was far larger than the Nazis - and after RAF bombing started (destroying 40% of Nazi factories, and nearly half of all the war materiel produced by the Nazis were spent just against the RAF not even including the USSR or USAAF). The Royal Naval blockade created all of Germanys resource issues throughout the war. They were starving in winter 1940 and after securing the largest arms for grain deal with the USSR in history they invaded because the Nazis were broke and had no hope of economic survival but through conquest. 17 Million British soldiers fought in the war, this doesn’t include the colossal contribution made by Canada, Australia, India (which assembled the largest volunteer only army in history of 2.5 million troops), New Zealand, South Africa, Rhodesia, and other commonwealth territories. The idea the UK did any less than the US in WWII is patently false, and the UK is the only one of the “main powers” without who the war would have been unwinnable - regardless of that only being the fact for the USA because they needed an unsinkable launching pad lol. 40% of Russian medium and heavy tanks available in 1941 and 1942 were British made tanks. Moscow, St Petersburg, and Stalingrad would certainly have fallen without them. And finally, No, I’m not denigrating what the US did, all I’m saying is acting like the U.K. was “saved” when the war was being won by December 1941 or that America did everything or even more is insulting. American civilians didn’t die in the war (well, 8 did). I could very obviously list all the accomplishments the Americans made in the war here and it would be pages long. Their resources they provided were absolutely crucial and they did the vast majority of the work against Japan. However they certainly didn’t do more on the western front - the fact nearly half the Nazi economy was producing AA guns, ammunition, aircraft, and repairing buildings to counter solely RAF bombings proves this. No, I’m not anti American, I am American however havw U.K. citizenship as well and have spent 10 years of my life there and the lack of knowledge and care amongst a minority of Americans for what the UK actually did during WWII is shocking considering without them Europe would now be controlled by Nazis.

Remember how in CoD 1 when you did the Russian campaign you played unique characters that made you feel the natural world around you. My biggest gripe with Vanguard will always be it's side effects on MW2019 and Warzone. The integration broke both games and replaced the relatively balanced Verdansk with an unbalanced and uninteresting map riddled with bugged and incomplete terrain lovingly topped off by the Vanguard-stuff-only game modes that hog the playlist instead of just letting people use the guns and characters from other games like it was intended since Cold War integration. Here's to hoping this Sh*t doesn't last the full 6 seasons, cuz I'm so done with it.

The SS officer @ 45:48 has rank epaulets of an SS-Standartenführer (or SS-Oberführer), equivalent to a colonel in the German army. But in the left collar, he has the rank insignia of an SS-Hauptsturmführer (captain in the German army). The guy was promoted in the shoulders but demoted in the collar :) Destroying history is not enough. They must fuck with the rank system too. Another thing that I caught @ 46:24: The interrogator is supposed to be Gestapo (Sicherheitsdienst insignia in the left sleeve). So, he shouldn't have a SS insignia in the right collar. Verdun is a game that knows how to display diversity while respecting history by only including non-white units that actually fought on the Western Front in WW1, and by having them in their own separate faction with their own uniforms. This way, you get your diversity without turning half the British Army into Indians, and seemingly the entire German Army into Africans. The first cod on console finest hour portrayed diversity and historical accuracy perfectly. You play as a British SAS operator a soviet infantry man, tank operator and a female sniper. And for the Americans you play as a white officer and also a black tank commander while showing real footage of the events you're about to play through I really wish we had games like that again. The extras where they show the making if the game with the voice actors and writers show how much love went into the game. I highly recommend anyone who likes call of duty especially the classics play that game it can be a challenge too and it shows the war from several prospectives

One issue that bothers me that seems to bother no one else so much is how keen they were to sell Soviet paraphernalia and let you play as Soviets and embellish your guns and profile with their emblems but in Vanguard there's nothing even close to Nazi stuff you buy or use. Even without Swastikas even an iron eagle or a German operator would be something but nothing! The reason it should bother you is that if their reason for not having Nazi paraphernalia is because of atrocities or anti semetism then they should absolutely not have Soviet paraphernalia because they were just as bad. I can honestly say that I never opened up a game and thought "Oh! It's so diverse!". Usually, when I open a game, the first thing I do is look for water and see how the physics are and the way the waves look, look at the backdrops and minor details, if it's a shooty shoot game I like to see how the explosions look. I listen to the voice acting, music, sound effects, and how the environment changes. I pay attention the optimization of the game, looking for bugs, looking for quirks, looking for eater eggs, etc. Paying attention to the story, whether or not it's good, especially compared to a prior release, it's authenticity. There are about a hundred plus things I look at/for which pertains to the game and it's performance and replayablity before I even think of whether or not enough skin color is in the game. It's so low on the list, because I am a damn adult and confident in myself and I can have fun playing as pretty much any race or sex and not expect MY skin color to be in the game because forced representation is just a giant dog turd when it isn't natural or authentic. What DOES make it further up the list is obvious woke tom foolery and stupidity. Because Woke stupidity can actually negatively affect the game, it's story, authenticity, and many other things. Black Nazis? Sure, only in a woke game industry that is pushing further and further to extreme wokism, which means things are being pushed further and further towards extreme stupidity.

I was watching Activision address their stockholders a few years back. They quoted a statistic about how much time the average player is spending in game. I think nonsense like the MVP vote isn't to make people feel better, I think it's to keep people in the game for longer. I also think the lobbies disbanding after each match has a ton to do with this as well.

What’s funny I read a while ago that stockholders were concerned that Activision wasn’t selling enough games maybe 10 years back. What caught the stockholders attention was Activision’s decision to pull the plug on Guitar Hero and they noticed Activision didn’t have as much IPs compared to EA, TAKE-TWO and Ubisoft and said they shouldn’t rely on COD.

I’m sort of torn on camping. Having a tactical advantage on someone by locking down and area, and forcing them to change their routes and tactics is really how tactical maneuvers are done. Support by fire essentially is there to pin your enemies balls the the ground while your assault element cruises right up their moms drive way and gives them all a Hot lead Injection. But I can see where it can for sure be infuriating in gaming when it happens, especially when your the one getting rocked by someone who’s well dig in.

In world at war litteraly nobody cared you could play as japanese or wermacht soldiers but in multiplayer you can only be allied soldiers. And not just that - in multiplayer, there are no nazis, since you don't fight for a 'side', it's just team Red and team Blue. The characters in multiplayer are all allies, none of them are Wermacht. The multiplayer is literally allies slaughtering each other, with no actual nazis present. I'd call that a very deep and insightful satire about how today's political discussions devolve into people, who by logic should be on the same side, violently fighting each other for no reason - but that would be giving the devs of this trash game too much credit.
