Interesting archive footage, I used to love The Big Match. And Sunderland's win at WHL was rather unexpected, given we had nothing much to play for, while Spurs were strong contenders for an immediate return to The First Division. And our 3-2 win might well have proved costly re Spurs promotion ambitions, for while they did eventually go up, it was purely on goal difference over Brighton. A difference of nine goals, thus Spurs' 9-0 home win v Bristol Rovers in the 1977-78 campaign, seemed to be rather significant, come the final analysis!

Funnily enough if the play-off system had been in operation that season we would have sneaked in, but since it wasn't 6th place was seen as a huge disappointment given the heroics of the previous year. I was at Brighton for their final match against Blackpool, and rumours that Southampton had won 3-0 were still going round the Goldstone Ground at full-time, leading to wild celebrations that only stopped when Brighton manager Alan Mullery came onto the pitch and confirmed that Tottenham had got the point they needed to go up. But the season didn't end that day. The Blackpool-supporting friends I watched the game with took their defeat in good grace - despite a wretched run of form that had seen them slip from promotion contenders to the lower half of the table there were still five teams below them who would all have to win their final games in order to send Blackpool down. That couldn't possibly happen...could it? Happy New Year Andrew - let's hope January 6th is a day to remember for all the right reasons.

@@richardfurness7556 Happy New Year to you too Richard! I’m very much looking forward to Sunderland’s “derby” FA Cup third round clash with Newcastle on 6th January very much. Obviously Newcastle will be faves, then again, they do say that league form can count for little in the cups. And given that Newcastle’s recent form has not been too clever, well, who knows. After all, we were the underdogs v Leeds at Wembley back in 1973, and look what happened then! And yes, the final Saturday of the 1977-78 season, re The Second Division promotion battle was a rather tense affair. For the Southampton v Spurs clash was obviously a rather critical, with both sides needing a point for promotion, which is exactly how it turned out. So while Spurs returned to The First Division at the first attempt, Brighton and their fans must have been a bit gutted, as they missed out on a second successive promotion. For Brighton were pipped on goal difference, nine goals I gather, hence Spurs’ 9-0 home win v Bristol Rovers earlier in the 1977-78 season eventually proved to be rather significant! As for Brighton, they did of course make up for the disappointment of that narrow miss, by going up to The First Division for the first time ever, as runners-up to Crystal Palace at the end of the 1978-79 season. And yes, it was rather strange how Blackpool ended up relegated to The Third Division for the first time in their history at the end of season 1977-78, by way of a rather unlikely sequence of events/results I gather. Its a funny old game as they say!

In fairness Tottenham were olny outside the top 2 for something like 3 weeks all season so they certainly deserved (under the old rules) to get promotion

Love the old footage. The old bias has akways been there though....lets go to Spurs when its actually Bolton Wanderers leading the division. Theyre in the Northern provinces and nowhere near as glamorous. Saw it out though. Brian Moore has to be the commentator and anchorman that even now, all should aspiire to. Merry Christmas

You realise, or perhaps you don’t, that ITV was regional then. The Big Match was a London Weekend TV production. But if all you want to do is have a whine, go back to bed.

Good to see ManUre cheating and getting never-in-a-million-light years penalties then as much as they do now.
