Hi Ian before retired we did a lot of work for a private collage and the council did a lot of splitting and you always roll with the slits as you did

You're more likely to close slits at an angle than perp. but along them on dry is always better. If you were using a cambridge you'd want to go across.

Yep Ian you rolled the right way. You could have got Holli to take out a chilled block of pastry and slit it then use a rolling pin to act like your roller and roll along the slits then do the opposite on the other side and roll it the other way and see which slits close up more. Also Holli would then have to use the pastry and bake you a nice big jam tart so Win Win. You find the best way to roll and get a nice feed out of it as well LOL.

Always grease when laying plant up for the winter, keeps moisture out when it's full. We used to be paid an extra hour per day for greasing, fuel and other checks. You lost a weeks greasing money if the foreman found anything missing.

Nice video Ian, i enjoy rolling and making stripes in our fields. rather then have to remember to let the water out of the roller each winter we put a 20 litre can of Antifreeze in the roller with the water filled up and have not touched it since then for 7 years. Ours lives outside all year round and no issues

Grease - cheapest "tool" on the Farm but also the most awkward, messy and annoying one to use. Even Central Grease points are a nuisance and only a little better. It's a cost thing.

Yes, they all do, it helps them turn like a diff, preventing turf damage.

No tony, some wont, unless its particularly attractive like baby calf or lamb poo, rabbit poo is like raisins to them as well, others will roll in stuff, then ingest it when they clean themselves later, it only takes a few microscopic parasite eggs to make it to the gut and then you have a problem. The biggest risk this time of year though is external parasites like ticks, dogs can pick them up, and bring them home.
