I (a Rovers fan) worked at this time in the Brains/Kraft factory in Kingswood, Bristol. On the Monday all the City fans at work had written 9-0 on the white caps we had to wear. Tough day! :-D

The best time I ever had with my Dad was at this match; or maybe the 2nd Ricky Villa goal against Man City in the FA cup final....

I remember this. I was 14 at the time and had a mate who was a Spurs fan. Needless to say, he was delirious after this result and Spurs return to Division 1

I was at this match, 🤔 lower shelf. Returned to 1st division for 78/79 season and a little matter of signing for two world cup player's. from Argentina.

I was at that match. Colin Lee was a Torquay United player and with some of his family and friends we all went up to watch the match. Many years later I was working at Torquay United when Colin came back to act as our manager. Had some great times. Incidentally Frank Prince who was also playing for Rovers that day, was also working with us at Torquay United as their football in the community officer. Funny old game.

I was 19 and in the Park Lane end. I was just to the right of the goal ( left as per camera). Brilliant atmosphere and had great day.

We all know about Hoddle but Peter Taylor was class as well, I agree. When he was with Crystal Palace he was capped for his country, making him the only player playing in the 3rd Division to pull on the England shirt.

I was playing for my works team when this match was being played. Our manager who was an Arsenal fan kept updating me from the touchline when each goal went in. I couldn't believe it. I think we won our match as well but not by nine! Coys.🐓

One of the few games we didn’t go to that season typical, but what it didn’t show was the spurs team consoling the rovers keeper who was in tears , that was when it as sporting.

Nobody expected Spurs scoring 9 goals with a huge victory margin which I was 13 at the time.

Coventry City played Spurs on the Wednesday in the League Cup at White Hart Lane, Cov won 3:2 Hutchinson, Powell and Graydon, I was there with Mum Dad and Sister PUSB !!!!!!!
@andrewc4612 Жыл бұрын
The significance of this win was perhaps illustrated come the end of the 1977-78 season. For while Spurs did make an instant return to Div. 1, it was only on goal difference over Brighton. For Spurs final GD was +34, Brighton's +25. In other words, NINE goals ...

My first real taste of the mighty Spurs, taken to White Hart Lane for this match at age 9 by my Dad with my 8 year old Brother, for me the bug had always been there and always will be, my brother turned traitor and went on to support Liverpool lol

Yes for one season. Got relegated in 76-77. Ironically that spell in Division 2 allowed us to rebuild after several years of drifting. Wouldn't be able to do that nowadays

I bought an Evening News on the way back from working my Saturday job at Harrods. Saw the score in the Stop Press and thought it must be a mis-print. No Teletext in those days let alone social media. But I'd swap all today's "conveniences" to be transported back to a time when football had soul. Look at those kids standing and the fun they're having.

I remember putting a £500 bet on Spurs to win 9-0 at odds of 250-1. Won £125,000, which was a fortune back then. Enabled me to buy my first house and start myself up in business.
@tonybates78703 жыл бұрын
Is that true? If so, what a hunch!
@martinwhite8293 жыл бұрын
@@tonybates7870 Absolutely true. I also put £500 on Leicester to win the league at the start of that season, and another £500 on Spurs to win 7-2 last night. Both things happened and I'm now a multi-millionaire and about to make a bid for Amazon.

Lee and Moore inspired Villa and Ardilles to join spurs….Spurs were never able to get the out of Lee and Moore after this game. What a shame such great talent was mishandled.

I was at this game and it was fantastic. Rovers must have had a terrible defence since we had the two worst centre-forwards that Spurs ever had and yet they got 7 goals between them! Ian Moores would have struggled playing a game in the park and Colin Lee did nothing after this game. But i did have a good day out at the time.!Great memories as a teenager back then.
@tonybates78703 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's funny how both got hat-tricks or more yet neither were heard of again. I went to a few games in that 77-78 Second Division season. We didn't even come top, as I remember, despite a lot of high scoring wins - I seem to recall we were promoted in second place. Oldham and Notts County got trounced by a Spurs team that put five past them both, I do know that. Whatever happened to that Hoddle fella that scores at the end?
@yggdrasil90396 жыл бұрын

Not a Spurs supporter but my first ever game was at White Hart Lane that season(my friend's dad took us both)they ended up drawing with Mansfield, I think it was 1-1 and I'm willing to bet its the only time they have met at WHL in the league!!!

How come this was on Match of the Day? There was a full program of First Division matches that day (including the Merseyside derby). Given they wouldn't have had the hindsight of the result, it seems strange to have sent John Motson to commentate on a Second Division match.
@wimbledan4 жыл бұрын
They used to every now and then. Showed a Wimbledon game when we was in the old third division
@tonybates78704 жыл бұрын
I reckon they got incredibly lucky - Spurs were a top club despite the relegation so they decided to send Motson down there just in case. There were quite a few Tottenham games televised that season.
@uphollandlatic3 жыл бұрын
As all four tiers of the football league were under one jurisdiction they would negotiate a contract with TV that insisted they covered a certain number of lower division games.
@tonybates78703 жыл бұрын
It's included in the Match Of The '70s edition for the 77-78 season, presented by Dennis Waterman, too. Loads of people, not just Spurs and Rovers supporters, remember the game.

And if i remember correctly, we went up that season, after just the one year in the (then) 2nd division, by finishing above Brighton, after a last match away 0 - 0 draw at Southampton, but the difference between us and Brighton went down to goal difference.... We were 9 goals better....wow.
