MARTIJN...sorry just wanted your attention. First thank you for all the effort you put into the videos, 2nd I know you like traditional things so I wanted to share an old timers saying where I come from. Learned it from my grandfather who was telling me how to take care of his old tools with wooden handles related to the linseed oil. He said to use it like this, "apply once a day everyday for a week, once a week every week for a month, once a month every month for a year, and once a year after that". It works, I have axes and hammers with handles that are now 80 years old still solid.

@AMYV3
@AMYV3 Жыл бұрын
@@phammond8155 yes. You are so right. 👏👏. But it does scares me sometimes. I have adult identical twin sons, now Im not a perfect parent and that’s ok. To start I had them young, with lots of loving help but with the expectations I am going to raise them to never have any confusion of who their mother was and boy did I take that challenge on lol. I did go back to school and then college then work but always focusing on them first not finding a boyfriend after the father (a good man just we were young :)) and I separated. They were/Are my priority and world. And I worked hard. but It wasn’t just for them, most lol but I did it for everyone they were going to interact with in life To be respectful, kind, honest. So I decided early on to choose my battles trust them to know what is good for them to get to their goals. And I wanted them to know how their decisions actions effect others. No matter how uncomfortable the topic they were going to see the world through others eyes as well. Topics like relationships drugs human rights issues and domestic violence they were going to know what is out there and how they can deal with it. which was so important to me. As a mother I strongly feel we have two choices…. first I can live focusing mostly on my happiness, Allowing school and people around them to teach them what is needed. Or I could raise them to have one of the most important tools in life TO HAVE EMPATHY for others. The boys now 30 and are doing amazingly and are very happy :) they have a baby lol 18 year old smart stunning little sister(they are 6’4 and Drew my daughter is barely 5’ feet lol) they adore so much, they are quite fatherly to her, they cherish and protect her and she looks up to them and loves them just as much. Now having a daughter I seem to notice the lack of enough great young men like these boys from Alabama. So many seem to have one goal ME ME ME ME ME…Ok maybe two to go into themselves too much and feel victimized if they experience any kind rejection, which they should know is very common we all experience it. I don’t know if it’s related But there is still so much violence, violence against women, so now with a daughter I’m terrified. I did MY job to school my sons to be kind and respectful to all and protective of all women. But it seems not all parents have done the same. It’s up to them to show by example and to teach them even if they are busy etc who else will do it if their parents don’t from a young age you’d think it would be obvious that you have to teach them on even the basics on how to treat others. When I hear about another case of violence of any kind, I just can’t help but think.. do the parents ever feel guilt and take the responsibility that their actions or lack of has caused this behavior and because of that they failed to protect the victim.🤷🏼‍♀️ I guess you can tell what side of the “nature VS nurture” debate I’m on 🤭😝 🤷🏼‍♀️♥️🇨🇦

This channel has an energy that is difficult to describe in words. It is as if it brings out an ancestral part of us, the one that still wishes to connect with nature and escape from the concrete cages we have created for ourselves. The fact of reading comments from all over the world that say the same things about this channel makes me think that deep down we are changing and returning to what it really takes in life to be happy. the chat around the first night's fire does bring some big points to light. there is too much information all at once these days. with our mobile devices, we have gobs of information and media in our faces all day long. we hear about too much happening. that's part of why so many people have anxiety these days, when prior years, not so much. these videos bring a slower, more relaxed momentum. and it brings us closer to nature, to our past. and as one of the guys put it, its a way of living that they simply dont have. i was lucky enough in my younger life to have a family member who strived for this lifestyle. my grandfather took me and my little brother camping, boating, hiking, and fishing, as much as his old bones would allow him. we went rafting in the Rockies, fishing in dozens of different rivers and lakes spanning several states, and camping in places 20 minutes from home, or 2 days drive from home and 4000 feet elevation difference. he taught me how to build a good fire, how to cook different foods in open flames, how to build, how to weld, how to dig, how to paint, how to wire. he's an incredibly intelligent man, and even in his early 80s, is strong as an ox (his arms are massive, but he's only about 5ft-6 in height). in the top 10 best memories of my life, experiences with him make up about half of them. then when i went out on my own, i was stationed in Germany, and i made it a point to get away, get out, and experience the slower world. i would drive the back roads of SW germany, and literally see 2 old women, one with a basket of bread, chatting at an open window with a friend. people biked everywhere. the air was clear and fresh. the noise was light. the nights were dark and full of stars. i think it's sad that so many people today are stuck to the cities and simply wont be able to experience life like this. the one lesson that you always learn, that EVERYONE learns: you arent missing out on much of anything when you live like this. i wish my family's health would permit us to live like this. we would prosper.

Is there any way you can post a link to the guy that mentioned he posts videos on his pottery? I'd love to see that. Samuel, Nate, Alex, Ethan, and Reid, good job! Keep living your best life. Safe travels 🙏 The deck looks beautiful, Martijn. The wood treatment/patina test is a great idea. I'm looking forward to seeing what you choose. I wonder which will be the longer-lasting ... probably a combination of burn and linseed oil? I'm partial to the lighter stains but I don't know how well that will stand up to the weather. It'd be a good idea to let those samples weather naturally then you'd have an answer for future reference. Something tells me working with wood is going to stick with you. Cheers from Boston.

Intersections are interesting. Cinematically exceptional (to date, in the series) ending on this one, from 36m on. Moving from the scene with the boys and the beers, the aerial work accompanying the conversation, the boys looking upward itself very useful as we are usually to drift upwards in the end of these episodes, all as the conversation fades, the drone shot of the last nails going in. The voices are gone. The music (odd for the moment it started) carried us through a strange place, a very textured moment (atmosphere with visitors, atmosphere without them that is the norm). The music selection in this segment, it has a very difficult job, the pulsing, it's rather constant, setting a different rhythm from the pace of life observed, it's not to end. With voices faded out, drone shot climbing above the deck, the narrative is held centered / re-centered, one man, in the mountains, Martijn steps aside off the deck, he's the center of this, but also aside from it. In this ending, the music and the visual elements create a feeling of a story that doesn't just continue (next week), but is somehow without bounds in time, forward or reverse, ethereal. This story doesn't feel like it just continues, but rather it has somehow "always been there," and we are just glimpsing at it. Every nail/hammer strike Martijn brings down is one of intention, but it feels as if the wind could carry him away and the shot might be the same. It's ghostly. The clarity of things. This might be a ghost story. Perhaps, in some years, this whole series must end with Martijn, again, thinking there is a wolf, running/gliding outside to chase it, Martijn fading into the air. Timeless, always there, never there, full of intent, but so gentle somehow, precise. The earth, moved or unmoved by him? He is the wind. --- Visitors create a strange atmosphere. (There are elements of liability to be considered, but that is Martijn's concern, not mine.) Americans (with all the things that carries), young. Very innocent men. And within them, a mix of natures further. Martijn, older, in the peak of his physicality, and he's seen so many people in his travels. How do these men intersect, and what is exchanged? What pressures are felt by each? How are needs met, and Martijn, so much to be found within even the shadow of him. Who would dare to pick up a brush to paint on his canvas, when every stroke of his own carries such care/intent/nuance. I'm all for helping, but to anyone who's considered it, in light of Martijn's seemingly intrinsic capacities, an artisan growing in all ways, this is Martijn's masterpiece, I couldn't dare chance to mishandle it. So much here in these chapters of life, Martijn is experimenting, learning, but things feel heavy (the stones themselves heavy, it's a heavy place). Yet we are watching from a gentle vantage, Martijn's lens floats, as does the man himself. (great autofocus!) A stress or release can be observed in Martijn's physical frame, his movements. He is tense, in moments, it is a rich texture to observe. His intent in all things, (inexplicable at the moment). We are witnessing creation. A force of life, willed into physical artefacts, and form. An electric planer. Marvelous. To watch Martijn interact with tools to bring something to form is, uh, perhaps an essential human experience; it's quite epic. There is so much to explore here, something is being revealed. This is another world. This isn't man versus nature, or man versus self. This is a story of place. I think it's a ghost story. I'm not sure yet.

I have thoroughly enjoyed every second of this amazing and purposeful slow motion adventure. I have worked alone most of my life as a residential remodeling contractor, personal home renovator and rental property owner. I, more often than not, choose run down and distressed properties that I believe have “good bones” and are worthy of the extra time and energy to save them while many others would have destroyed, disposed of and replaced them with new. I thrive on the non-stop challenges and problem solving that remodeling and renovations provide and I have very little interest in the limitations and conformity of typical new construction. My sweet wife introduced me to Italy about 10 years ago and our somewhat secret vacation spot is along the Ligurian Coast away from the popular foreign tourist areas. My wife speaks Italian very well and we’ve had the good fortune to make a number of local friends who welcome us into their small community and, more importantly, into their daily lives. We both have fantasized about finding a small semi-remote property in Italy ourselves but in the meantime I’m thrilled to be following your fantastic and exceptionally well documented journey. Thank you from the Pacific Northwest of the US of A. 😍

Really wonderful that these young lads came to help ..... and with some tough tasks !! Odd though .... as Alabama is the considered the deep South and no one had a Southern accent ..... they had voices like yankees from Connecticut ?!! Best Thoughts, Alan Van Reed Boston Massachusetts

..they seemed like nice young lads..as for the accents, I live in Georgia(the state) next to Alabama, and I can tell you, there are more people moved in here now from other parts of the country, sadly, we are losing our accents(I still have mine-family been here since early 1800's)..but my children barely have any, there children probably won't have any at all..sad, losing culture, but I think it is happening everywhere..not just in the regions of the U.S., but globally..I read somewhere, that the "New Yawk" accent from NYC was dying out, also...anyway, nice to see a lot of people from different cultures working here together to get something done..more of that is what the World needs right now! :)

@@dyer2cycle thanks for your reply ...... yes ...now that I think about what you have stated ...it makes a lot of sense. The world is becoming smaller with travel and technology and access to other cultures at the touch of the keys on our computers ...... I agree with your sentiment that cultures need to work together to get things done.

PS I’ve used the vinegar and steel wool solution to speed up the weathering of new cedar…helping it blend in faster with older cedar. That works very well but don’t think it’s a preservative like charring etc.

In my humble opinion, I would use screws... less rust and you can take it apart easier if you ever have to. That deck is such a cool design though so I hope you never have to! Edit: Also less chance of creaking boards and if they do start to creak you can pull the screws tight to stop it. 2nd edit: Ignore that, you completed the deck and it is truly beautiful. Well done!

Watching these videos you truly understand that the internet has opened up new horizons, it allows you to see what life is like on the other side of the world, in Countries that you may never see in person. This mixture of races is also new for us Italians, given that up to 25-30 years ago there were no foreigners in our country. Seeing people of different nationalities collaborating is certainly a pleasure for the eyes and for the heart.

It seems like a pleasant change to ever growing "fast paced" videos that are jumping like crazy - just killing any meaning of those and flashing with such speed that you can't enjoy. Bravo dude!
