Looks like they’re missing a ground wire on the main breaker panel now that’s considered a subpanel?

Yup...good catch! They need a 4 wire feeder to the new sub panel
@wizard3z8683 жыл бұрын
Another install where the main panel becomes a sub because the ats becomes the means of first disconnect therefore the panel needs to be feed with 4 conductors and grounds and neutrals need to be separated it's the same rule in the states as Canada

@wizard3z8682 жыл бұрын
@@bobtenwick nice catch are you from or familiar with CSA codes cause I'm not i just now a lot are the same in the NEC and where this is in Canada maybe the ahj doesn't require meter to be earth bonded?
@bobtenwick2 жыл бұрын
Unless that neut connection at the meter socket is bonded I suppose... but at 56 seconds he's putting covers on with no grounding electrode conductors, no cold water bonds, nothing. I don't see a bonding jumper on that gas line either, but I don't know Canada codes. Does all this grounding take place in the interior panel? If so that gives the neutral current multiple paths back to the utility transformer, and all but one on bare metal. Consider a scenario where the neutral connection between the transfer switch and interior panel becomes compromised for any reason. Where is the neutral current going to go? Into the ground rod, through the jacuzzi or the neighbor's swimming pool, up and onto the generator enclosure and back to where its bonded again in the transfer switch? And did they lift the neutral bond in the generator? Proper system grounding and bonding is THE number one consideration when installing any electrical system, particularly one with two sources. It's somewhat irresponsible to post a "complete installation video" with these oversights.

@wizard3z8683 жыл бұрын
The ats becomes the 1st means of main disconnect therefore neutrals and grounds are bonded 4 wire should have been run to the panel because it is now a sub. bonding screw needs to be removed and grounds and neutrals separated but because it's an ats ahj in both countries seems to negate these facts

So if I add a automatic transfer switch when I install a generator do I have to put a separate Ground Bar in my main electrical meter and make it a subpanel
@bobtenwick2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the install. In this case the generator backs up the whole service, so yes, the transfer switch becomes the one and only place where neutral to ground connections take place. That includes grounding electrode connections.

Something you don't see in the advertising, you basically have to have two major services reinstalled, & then you have the generator on top of that. And what a mess having all that hanging off the side of building. Integrating it into a new build would probably be the only way to make it worth while, otherwise the cost has got to be prohibitive.

A transfer switch automatically detects when the power from the grid gets lost, and automatically starts the generator and shuts off the breaker going to the main grid so you don’t backfeed the main power lines with your generator. Think of it as automatically completely disconnecting you from the grid to power your house with a generator. Most building codes now require a transfer switch so that way a generator can’t be run while also backfeeding the power lines (which could put lineman at risk) due to energizing a line that they thought was dead.
