Tonights 2200 and the final 9th Horner of this set concerns Lt Ripley being found and largely ignored at an inquest into what happened. Worse shes lost her daughter as well, an awful moment. She warns the court anyone going to LV426 will be a death sentence. Families there already shes told bluntly. However Burke a corporate head, tells some on LV426 to have a look. The colony a few weeks later goes quiet. After persuading Ripley to go back and she doesn’t want to. Shes in with the troops, they all happy, until she tells them bluntly, what there up against. Landing there they find a desolate LV426 colony, wind blowing and nobody home. All apart from a young kid Newt, scared very much indeed. ‘Adults say there are no monsters Ripley, but there are’. This unsettling Ripley as he knows very well there are. The team though knows best and all the colonists seem to be under the atmosphere station. Finding them though creates awe and terror, and when one lets loose the whole lot attack. One after another taken. Only Ripley getting the APC out with a few of them left gets them away. The Dropship also wiped out, as an alien took the pilot out.
Back at base preps run through as they barricade in, ‘they come at night mostly’newt says, and surely enough they do, whamming the link door harsley with alien hate. Luckly two robot sentries stop there progress for now. The android now heads out to get the other dropship and the team wonders what’s creating the aliens. A further attack with lights out sends the team into disarray and newt is taken. Android lands the APC, Ripley tells him ‘we re not leaving. With the atmosphere station on emergency cooling and ready to go, Ripley heads in finds newt and gets pushed into cold room. There with an icly glare is the Queen. However ripley doesn’t hang about and lets loose with all shes got, this drops the Queen. And now a run up the lift shaft. Queen nearly getting them right there. With the dropship arriving they head on up though the queen nearly got them again.The colony explodes and the ship docks with the sulaco. The queen though is crafty and hidden in the landing gear, and strips the android in two. And now Ripley takes it on with a G suit, giving the queen a taste of her own heavy medicine. A fight hard and an exit door exit finally sends that off into space.
James Horner composed a full on score for this one, the main aliens theme 4 note repeats beautiful in craft, the combat theme also very good having heavy brass moments and a great theme too. Its in the detail though where wavering brass, and repeating echoey chimes that just elicit terror. Not what you see so much but hear. And Horner did so so well with that. The attacks hard too with ferocious brass movements and woodwind and percussion. Add in that final climactic leaving of LV-426 as the brass rolls in stages and its one whoppingly amazing score from start to finish. Tough time on it he had yes, but what a result and sound to go with. Aliens
