Power Pro Varmint is my fave 223 powder. I have seen it push the Hornady 75gr bthp to an eye-watering 2930fps and no pressure signs out of a 20 inch tube. I forget the load and dont remember it being exceptionally accurate. I never went higher as the speed was starting to worry me. Theres just something about the pressure curve in that powder that makes it hold pressure longer i guess and it makes it awesome for hot-roding 223 if you have the stones lol.

Great Shooting JRB, I have shot a lot of that N140 load of 24.1 grains with CCI 41’s as a generic accuracy load when shooting different riffles out at the range, as that is the “Accuracy load” Sierra recommends in their Reloading Manuel for the 77 grain SMK and tends to shoot really well in most all rifles. It also shoots .5 in my 18” WOA if I’m doing my part. I figured velocity wouldn’t get there with N140 as charge weights and burn rates are really close to Varget, but excellent accuracy. Nicely done. I haven’t tried Power pro Varmint or 2000MR yet, I have been happy though with 25.2 grains of 2520 for my MK262 clone load, so far it’s been really good. But after seeing this I may have to pick up a pound or two of Power pro Varmint and 2000MR to try. Thanks for the great vids, I know you have a million things on the table for vids, but if you ever get caught up, I would love to see the 73 grain Berger HPBT target bullet tested in your .223 series, as many of my shooting buddies are having great luck with that bullet in the factory Federal GMM Berger ammo. I’m thinking it would really shine with N140 or 8208 XBR. Also any Match bullet testing in the 6.5 TC Compass would be great. Either way, great stuff and keep up the great work. Glad to see you posting Vids a little more regular again. Thanks.

Since you’ve covered so many different powder combos, perhaps we need a summary. Take the ones that match (within 50 fps) of the Mk262 ammo and reshoot to verify. Even if they don’t group as well in your rifle, they might group in someone else’s.

@@JohnnysReloadingBench Regards from Finland! Nice to see our Vihtavuori doing well. Also, our powder selection is pretty much limited into Vihtavuori and others are available rarely and probably not the one you are exactly looking for. But, the question... N140 or N540 better to get best of 16" barrel? CCI 41 is not available here, but CCI 400 is everywhere and 450 is pretty easy to find also. Which one would be better bet?

@@jpenna1976 I see you posted the question over a year ago…. I called CCI awhile back and asked what the difference was between their small rifle primers. I was told that CCI *41 is a CCI 450 (magnum) with a thicker cup and the anvil was a different shape, everything else was the same as the 450. I have never purchased 450, almost all my small rifle primers that I shoot are 400 or *41. When I’m loading extruded powders I use 400, when loading spherical ball powders I use the *41. In past load development when using H335 or w748 my groups shrank in size after I switched from 400 to the *41’s.

I understand this is an older session and do enjoy seeing your load data. I have always heard that verticle is a powder issue and horizontal dispersion is seating depth or wind conditions. Some of your groups I think can be tightened up some even with the magazine limit if you adjust seating depth. Good luck and keep up the good work.

Benjamin Brown .... Yup send 'em... Hey Johnny.. think of it this way... Pressure is only one component of how fast a bullet goes down the barrel. Heat is another variable. Pair the burn temp and burn rate and that would tend to determine the rate of production of gas. Slow but rate and high temp would probably give you a much broader pressure curve as a fast powder much more of a spike. So powders such as Reloder 26 give very scary velocity but not necessarily dangerous pressure. But it will still burn a barrel. Don't think you were in danger, but if you ran some strings of fire it might get hotter faster.

I have watched a lot of your videos, not all of them because I have been reloading for 36 years and some just don't interest me. But lately I've been getting in to .223 ar's, always have had rifles in .223. There seems to be something wrong with your setup. I was hoping the white oak barrel shot better but I still see the same patterns, it might shoot a smaller group when things come together but there is some thing is just not right. If it was me for all money you put down range you should buy a top of the line barrel krieger or Bartline I'm trying a new battle arms development this weekend until my krieger gets here in a few months and put that one on and see the difference. still some good vel. info. Those pressure sign differences are due to the differences in the burn curve between typical single base, extruded powders that control burn rate with geometry and light coatings, and double based, spherical powders with heavier deterrent coatings. Spherical powders start "slower" and have fatter "tails" on the burn curve. Nitroglycerin also alow for higher velocity at any given pressure. Total area under the burn curve and gas volume is what drives velocity--NOT peak pressure. Why is this so hard for reloaders to understand? PPV was not way over pressure...N140 was over pressure at way less velocity, which is proof that you assertion about muzzle velocity is wrong.

The vast majority of my brass needs trimmed so that creates a big problem. Have you ever heard of that problem or how to fix it? If not, what would be a high quality affordable trimmer for .223?

240FP Thank you. I'm pretty close to throwing my box of resized .223 brass across the room because all I want is 100 pieces to load for deer season and I swear they grow out of spec when I touch them haha. All I reload at the moment is .223/5.56 and 9mm, but I hope to get into .308 someday. No reliable source of brass and I can't afford to shoot .308 all day to make brass. My range is a little wooded area several miles outside of my town, so that eliminates range pickups as well. I'm sure I'll find some eventually haha.

240FP That figures. Reminds me of when a friend asked me what caliber of pistol he should buy. I said to buy a 9mm or a .45, and pushed the 9mm so I could have a source of brass to reload. Now almost a year later I have half a 5 gallon bucket full and more keeps coming. Need to figure out how to build a teleporter so you can send me all that .308 brass you're not using. Guys that shoot with me have given me the nickname Brasshole. I'm not leaving until I've picked up every bit of brass. I don't care if it's .22 I'm picking up every bit of it lol.

good question... Cliffhanger... In next weeks episode, Does Batman get away from the Jokers clutches... bet his mind was made up before the last vid was out. Place your bets... I'd guess JP... never had anything bad from JP... I'd of took a chance on the faxon, light, 5r rifling, bet it would be a shooter. But I don't build 15lbs bench rifles.

Good Luck! I found ONE bottle of it on Gunbroker around the middle of 2021 but they wanted some VERY stupid amount for it. It sat there until the end of 2022 and in December of that year, my dumb @ss bought it! Shipping and all, ONE pound of it set me back just under $100! And that was the LAST time I have seen any of it anywhere! I have not even heard of anyone finding a pound of the stuff since before COVID started! I won't even use my bottle until I know it either A: Is available again or B: Is discontinued.

This was based on the OAL of the Blackhills 262. A bit shorter than the usual book recommendations for magazines. 2.260” in the current Sierra Manual

H4895 is a better powder for the 77gn.

Define "better". We tested H4895 a little in Video #10 but I need to go back and try it again. Same with Reloder 15. I chose the wrong charge weights with both and had pressure problems. I don't think either powder will be able to hit our 2760 target velocity. Great accuracy powders, though.

I didn't see anything that I would say were pressure signs on your max varmint charge..none at all. if you are saying you were way over pressure with the power pro varmint but yet seeing no pressure signs on your brass, then looking for pressure signs on brass is useless. Obviously if your brass doesn't even have flattened primers, you weren't having any pressure problems. if you REALLY want to read your pressure you need the equipment that will tell you the PSI or CUP readings. I don't know what you are afraid of with the power pro and those 2800 fps velocities. Ive gotten just over 2800 with TAC but out of a 20" barrel. Id keep on going and see what 2900fps looks like and see if you get another accuracy node. That would be a killer round at 2900fps and less than an inch group. If your brass is fine, you're pressure is fine. The whole "blowing up in your face" thing due to a little too much powder is complete horse poo, internet rumors. Explosions are always from obstructions or an idiot reloader that used pistol powder for a rifle load.

You've been shooting these strings of test rounds for awhile. Shouldn't you put the good ones to the test, and try and repeat your findings? Like getting a good one, and shooting that one recipe 5 strings of 5.

I've watched them all. Those were a single 10 round group; which is a different standard in which you established them. I'm sort of stuck on the scientific method, of recreating the same results, using the exact same standard.

I meant to also add that your data on PP Varmint show how incredibly bad Alliant is at testing and marketing their own powders. It's like they don't care whether they sell any or not. Not testing PP Varmint with bullets heavier than 55 grains, when it's burning rate is notably slower than their own AR-Comp is inexcusable. Also not having any 5.56 Data when 5.56 & 223 Wylde chambered rifles are among the most popular sold and reloaded for in the USA is also puzzling. Do they even get out into the real world with actual shooters and reloaders?? You know the real customers that might buy their stuff if they actually spent some effort testing and marketing their powders....
