In this video, I’m conduct a detailed comparison of the 308 Winchester and the 223 Remington cartridges.
Few topics seem to be as hotly contested as the 223 vs 308 debate. Indeed, that dispute spans over five decades and really took off during the mid-1960s when the US Military started replacing the M-14 with the M-16 service rifle.
While there is a small overlap in their capabilities, the two cartridges represent two vastly different ways of thinking: smaller, lighter, and faster vs bigger, heavier, and slower. This is part of the reason why each have such a dedicated and loyal following and why the 223 vs 308 debate continues to rage on after so many years.
In this episode, I investigate the 223 vs 308 debate in detail and provide some insight into which cartridge is better suited for various situations.

As I have aged, I have shifted to the 223 in a mini 14 for home defense (in NYS an AR is now almost totally illegal and for health reasons I hesitate to use a shot gun). I have a Remington 788 in 223 also. I just bought a Model 70 in 7mm 08 for fall 2022 deer season. Due to this, my initial plans for using the 223 have been pretty much canceled. I think the 223 would be adequate with hand loads, but the 7mm gives me added insurance for one shot kills. Add in the possibility of tree branches and brush deflecting my shot and I think its pretty much case closed.

Very well presented. I own both mainly be of availability in post pandemic world, and use them according to application. Love them both, but a good suppressed .308 rig just has a warm spot in my heart ♥️

I have no fear of an ethical kill with 308. I dont feel confident enough with the 223 regardless of shot placement. Maybe with the proper ammo ? Just don't know. Any recommendations on effective 223 ammo for deer ?

Killed one this past season with Winchester deer season 64 grain only ran 20 yards and hit the dirt

Barns copper bullets or Nosler partition. Use the heaviest bullet that stabilizes in your rifle.

I would like to see a comparison between the .223/5.56 and the 300 Ham'r. I believe on quarry 50 lbs to 150 lbs (maybe a little more) the 300 Ham'r would be adequate whereas the. 223/5.56 would be a poor choice.

My two favorite rifles in my safe I want everything New Mexico deer and smaller I grab my 223 deer and bigger 308 is always out
