the main thing people miss is the strike zones are so much smaller than back in someone like Maddux's day, umpires do not widen the plate like they used to. command pitchers are that much harder to be. especially when the electronic strike zone comes into play. stuff is worth it, even if it may lead to injuries. like glasnow said, for most its a difference between 6 ERA and 3 ERA.

people keep saying pitchers need to be like Maddox. YOU CANT DO THAT ANYMORE! Maddox had one of the biggest strike zones of all time and ever since the zone on TV umps can’t give pitchers massive zones anymore. no one can be Maddox again cuz the game has changed too much

And to add onto to both of your points, this is why the “3 true outcomes” became a thing because pitchers throw so different resulting in more walks/strikeouts. More velo, movement, RPM’s, etc means the nastier the pitch, normally less control or command of it, and due to that hitters sit on one pitch they can hit. Instead of seeing an 85 mph slider even though they were sitting on an 93 4-Seam, adjusting and driving it, now sliders are sweepers at 90 mph and most hitters either just take, or swing and miss.

Yeah so they need to get rid and f the pitch clock too. That will allow pitchers to do even better. Holy HELL do I hate that pitch clock. I HATE IT.

Tyler makes a good point. To kill your kids dream out of fear of injury just can't end well. Best case scenario, your kid resents you for the rest of their life wondering what could have been. To avoid risk out of fear of repercussions is just not a great mindset. It stagnates people, and once you stop moving forward it's really hard to get going again.
@CharlesHorning
@CharlesHorning 2 ай бұрын
You don’t have to kill your kids dream by not chasing velo.
@lizardoclock2331
@lizardoclock2331 2 ай бұрын
@@CharlesHorning Well that's what they were talking about if you watch the video. In his mind, the kid needed to push his pitching to the next level to get a chance. He wanted to do velo training to do it, understanding the risk. The players are willing to get the surgery if it means they can get a free education or the chance to pitch in the bigs. A parent shouldn't stand in their way if they are willing to make that choice. It's their life, and the parent would, in the kids mind, be killing their dream by not giving them the chance to get that extra edge in their pitching.
@bvd7517
@bvd7517 2 ай бұрын
I really appreciate Tyler's point of view on this, but I think it is going to become a bigger issue going forward. Parents now are leery of youth football because of TBI risks, and while TJ side effects seem less severe, we perhaps haven't seen the full repercussions later in life.Tommy John himself is only 80.
@lizardoclock2331
@lizardoclock2331 2 ай бұрын
@@bvd7517 Of course, but we just don't know. Like he said, there's no real evidence for what the effects could be later in life. Imagine not trying hard at your one dream in life out of fear of a surgery to later find out that the surgery really works long term and doesn't affect health later in life. I mean that would just suck especially if you never find passion for anything again or fall on hard times financially. Football is a problem though. There are serious, known consequences of getting hit in the head over and over that are devastating to the player and the people around them for the rest of their lives. I understand pulling a kid out of football because you might legitimately ruin your kids brain. I don't think that's the case here. I get why people would want to keep their kids from doing it, but in this case I just feel like the risk definitely seems worth the potential reward.

I agree wholly with almost everything Tyler said regarding TJ surgeries and the risk reward being up to the pitcher. One thing to note is when he said he always looks at the radar gun though. He said he felt like he was throwing heat one day and then it was only 94 on the gun, so he started forcing himself to throw harder, that’s exactly what happens for these young kids when radar guns are around. Find a way to ban scouts and teams from using radar guns until players are professional, kids won’t be focused on arbitrary velo numbers if they’re not being tracked and they can’t see them. I feel like this is the only solution, but it’s so hard to implement/police.

A really radical idea is, since you can't really police how hard a person can throw, you could limit a pitcher to x pitches per outing and minimum number of days rest between starts. But in the end I think Tyler's point is that people make sacrifices to chase their dreams and UCL issues are all a part of the game. Everyone knows the risks.

I get where Tyler is coming from with his perspective, especially since he's had TJ. That said, two things I still wonder about/disagree with. 1. TJ surgery, as successful as it is, is not foolproof and there are still guys whose careers are ruined after it. The worst that can happen is that you have a career-ending injury. I get his point that that's always a risk, but it is a preventable risk. It's not like football where literally every play could be your last ever with really no way to avoid that. (Also with football, the chance you'll die early from CTE is also sky high). It's one thing if there's no alternative and this is what you have to do to succeed. I'm not sure TJ has to be a given. Clayton Kershaw is an example for me: elite pitcher who never had TJ because he stayed within his mechanics. 2. I don't know how to find this statistic, but do Japanese pitchers have TJ at the same rate as US pitchers? Or in Mexico or Latin American countries? I just wonder if this is exclusively a US problem or if it's a worldwide problem. Because if Japan isn't struggling with this, it does make me wonder if adopting the Japanese ball would require less force from pitchers to achieve similar results.

The biggest problem is youth sports. Kids are playing the same sport year round and that’s creating overuse injuries down the road. Like Plouffe, I think, said there’s just too much money in these academies and clubs focused on maxing out kids skills.

Tyler’s take is spot on. However he only felt the need to do all those things to make the show because that’s what scouts and talent evaluators wanted. If all of a sudden the requirements or preferences to be a pro changed so would pitchers philosophy
@8bitdee
@8bitdee 2 ай бұрын
The solution is expand the roster, allow more pitchers in teams for a bigger rotation so pitchers throwing 98mph heaters all the time can have a longer time to recover. If all you care about is velocity from pitchers in your sport, then allow them extra time to recover instead of putting them on the mound 4-5 days later.

It’s hard to take someone completely seriously when they say the reward outweighs the risks, when they’ve already been rewarded. I’d like to hear it from a struggling pitcher who can only dream about the money he’s sitting on.

I think to Glasnow's perspective, yeah, everything has a risk reward. But the risk-reward for baseball is like taking a hammer strike to your arm to buy a lottery ticket. Glasnow doesn't see it as a lottery ticket because his hit. Yeah, if the lottery ticket hits, it was worth it, but it's hardly a good tradeoff

There's nothing MLB can do. Its the scouts and GMs. They have to lower the barrier to entry for kids. They shouldn't have reduced the draft to 20 rounds. Take a chance on a kid throwing 88 with pinpoint control and good movement. Maybe you take him in the 39th round, but at least kids know they might have a shot even throwing under 95mph.

I would say have some financial penalties for pitchers and team ownership for arm injuries on pitchers. Establish a "speed limit" for pitchers where if they consistently exceed it would mean a fine on the pitcher and a fine on the organization. If the pitcher consistently violates the speed limit and ends up needing surgery, then the pitcher forfeits 50% of their salary and the organization is fined 100% of the pitcher's salary and 200% of the cost of the surgery. At the end of the season, the AL team and NL team with the most arm related injuries for the season, would forfeit their ability to draft pitchers in the Draft. Also, if the Organization trades for or signs free agents for the following season for pitchers and those pitchers have arm related injuries that season, severe financial penalties should be levied on the organization. The key here is to make it financially painful on the organization to make it not worth it.
