I actually saw the movie, he knew it wasn't solvable and he used that to try to test her after her mom said she could handle those types of questions. There's a scene in the movie where the professor asks his assistant to write the problem on the board and the assistant says "But it's not correct" and he says "Just write it exactly how I wrote it on the paper." It was a test and he thought the girl failed because she didn't realize it was unsolvable but the 7 year old said she knew it was false but didn't say anything because "Frank said it's rude to correct people." Great movie, definitely worth a watch.

I think Frank is the best guardian for Mary. I had a friend in 3rd grade who skipped 4 grades and reached 7th grade at age 10. The year before she finished highschool, she offed herself due to pressure from her mom, college entrance exam, etc. It's great to praise and affirm ones talent and ability, but pressuring them may just hurt them more than they realize.

They don't see real small person who need all stuff any small person need for development like boredom, playing, etc. as kid need social, emotional etc. development. They see child who can play on instrument well or is great at counting and all they care is how to use it so kid will do it even better. And from psychology pov it's understandable as they feel they need to help kid tonot waste her/his potential so she.he will be successful, but success like that isn't most important thing in life.

Genius or not, this was a beautiful movie. Parental themes or not, this was a beautiful movie. Art is meant to be beautiful, therefore this movie is artistic. In other words, even if Mary is a genius or not, this would be a beautiful movie, and even moving with this assumption, the choice between 'regular' versus 'gifted' school is an extremely powerful dilemma which harks to every parent I'm sure with this situation.

A pretty good movie, though it does set rather high expectations for what a gifted child means. They don't have to be university-level at age 7 to be gifted.

that “super intelligent girl solves problems” classroom scene has an uncanny resemblance to a similar one in matilda by roald dahl. but similarities aside, i like to think this could’ve been a happier version of matilda if she had grown up with a parental figure like frank or had supportive people around her from the very beginning - but then the book would’ve felt too empty, in a way

McKenna is so adorable, she's gonna have a huge career. I was watching this and my mom reminded me I was just like Marry. She reminded me that I got in trouble in Kindergarten for telling the teacher that she was "Unqualified to be my teacher." I already knew how to read and write before I went to school and could already do complex math when I was 5. And my brothers and I, were just like Marry. We were the only colored kids in our public school, being half black kids would still call us names and we would respond just like Marry did. Needless to say, we were in the office quite a bit at first for fighting with racists.

It was also hard watching this film. My grandfather was a top respected Engineer with the TTC Toronto and I was his favorite out of all the grandkids, but he saw my father as a disappointment. When my parents divorced my father took my mother to court over me. I was only 4 and didn't understand everything until court and the judge asked me how I felt about my father's action to gain custody of me. I was confused, so I asked, "He wants custody of only me?" and they said yes. I replied, "This is the stupidest thing I've ever seen in my life," and stormed out of the Court. The judge replied, "That's the smartest thing I've ever heard in this Court Room." And I was only 4.

Movie caps, this film 'gifted', made me think about what it could be my professional carreer as a teacher '. Maybe one day, I could face a gifted kid, like this one. The only part of the film, that was nonsense and Not realistic, was the love with the teacher bonnie. Great summary mate.

I remember watching this movie in elementary, and one of my friends said I was just like mary since I am way , more advanced than the rest of my batch during that time. I wanted to go to a different and better school after that and my teacher always supported me however my bond with my parents is not that great and during that time my parents had to travel a lot which really took a toll on me since I was young. Now during highschool that same "friend" would not even talk to me unless it was forced and would sometimes call me "gifted" but not in the good way

@@nicbentulan Why do you have an issue with the words: Actress, Waitress, Congressman, Congresswoman? There's nothing disrespectful about that, not even remotely. I love how satisfying that bully scene was, you could just sense how pissed Mary is for him destroying a project for no reason. Best of all, even though she is reprimanded for beating his ass, the school is quite reasonable in the fact that beating someone up isn't exactly a good thing no matter the reason.
