Great outboards! Great memories woke up listening to it :-) My first was a 9.5 hp from the sixties, but kind of a forerunner to the 9.9/15 - with the low hanging engine suspended in rubber mounts. My 9.9 built in 1979 was mostly run on cheaper 70 octane, but the dealer told me I should avoid very low octane at temperatures under +10 Celsius. When I changed the carburettor to one from a 15, the dealer said I would get around 13 hp and I needed to change the exhaust too to get the full 15 hp.

Question: I have 86 landau hawk 10 with 50 hp Yamaha: when idling for long time ( say at dock 15 minutes) I pound ring noise will come from the shifter. What is that ???
@Enjoyinqtheoutdoors4 ай бұрын
Maybe you can help me out. Recently bought a boat with a 1981 Johnson 90 hp 4 cylinder outboard. It’ll start a little rough but will even out. I let it warm up and high idle it. I then put it in gear and can only go 5mph for about 5 minutes until I can give it more and then it runs up to 40 and I can start, idle and kick it right away but if I kill the motor I have to let it high idle again and run 5mph again until it lets me give it more gas. If I don’t wait it will bog out. I cleaned the carbs and they seemed fine, changed fuel pump and no difference, one of the ignition coils was bubbly so I replaced it but still no difference. I tried a new tank as well and still the same issue. I’m not sure what else can be causing this issue.
@BoatBusters4 ай бұрын
@@Enjoyinqtheoutdoors first thing you need to do is check your compression. You should have 100+ PSI on every cylinder and all numbers should be really close to each other. (Within 10%). Next you need to confirm good spark on every cylinder. These engines run surprisingly well on only 3 or even 2 cylinders. Once you have confirmed good spark and good compression, we can move on from there. It sounds fuel related to me, I would really double check that your carb jobs were done correctly. You also have to make sure the butterfly valves on each carb are synced together and opening properly. Make sure you have fresh fuel with no chance of water being in it. Bypass any water separators and clean fuel filters out. Ensure no air leaks in fuel lines. Fuel issues are always the hardest to find but they usually are something dumb and easy… best of luck!!
@Enjoyinqtheoutdoors4 ай бұрын
@@BoatBusters thanks for your response man I really do appreciate it!! I did check compression but while engine was stoke cold and was reading 90 on all 4. It held at 90 too didn’t drop. New spark plugs and they have spark. Butterflies open and close together. There was some movement where the cables attach to the arm on the motor so I added a couple washes so it wouldn’t move sideways when I gave it throttle. I used my tank from my old smaller motor. Prime bulb does get hard and I don’t see any gas leaking out of carbs or fuel pump. Just so weird that once it runs well it will stay running well no matter if I idle it and throttle right away or reverse and throttle just fine but if I shut the engine off and immediately restart it and try to throttle it it will big out past 5mph. I may just take it to an out oars mechanic if I can’t figure it out. I will check for the air leaks next. Thanks!
@Enjoyinqtheoutdoors4 ай бұрын

@@bradmetzger7332 probably not fair because I have a heavy bias toward Johnson/Evinrude. In my opinion in the 60s through 80s the Johnson’s and Evinrudes are better engines. I also don’t often work on old mercuries because they are a nightmare to find aftermarket parts for so I typically avoid anything mercury that’s pre-1990.. however, during the 90s and still to this day I think Mercury really took the lead and is producing really good outboards.
