Being the skipper means being the skipper. Never apologize for the serious screw up of someone who usurps that authority UNLESS it endangers the boat and crew.

What a beautiful sailing day!!! The weather looked great, and the wind was good (with a minor interruption on reefing) and all looked happy with the change of tack. Totally agree with with off-shore sunsets🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻💥 Niiiice episode, guys. 🎉🎉 See you next time. ✨🌊💨⛵️🏝️👙🌞✨

My suggestion on whisker pole deployment would be to fix the pole to the mast first. It is never easy to attach the jaw around the genoa sheet with the sail already out, it can be done, but it can get sketchy. I often furl the sail in first and then bring the pole forward to the stay, clue and sheet and attach the jaw to the sheet. Now the the pole is attached at both ends... just unfurl the sail. The caveat here is that I've got an adjustable track that lets me change the height of the pole at the mast so that the other end meets somewhere close to the clue height and sheet so it does not come up short by being to low. Having the pole set at that height also allows me to just furl the genoa in without removing the pole when sailing into an anchorage. And, I thought your communication regarding the brazen course alteration was just fine with no apology necessary, but then again I am divorced and my relationship advice may be deemed questionable.
@TheSailingBison2 ай бұрын
Thanks, Tim! We never even considered furling in the sail. We'll keep that in mind as we head to Refugio and give it a try. Also, thanks for saying my communication was decent 😂 I'm often told I'm too abrasive in my delivery (not just by Will lol), so apologies are given freely around here!

Just at the beginning and the communication issue. Always speak what’s on your mind about breaking the established rules……in a respectful way as the goal, is not a “ robust dialogue.” ☺️ Also, PRO TIP: the boat does not need to be “into the wind,” to raise the main, only the boom needs to be. 😊👍🏻 Give it a try and practice. Can help, in a pinch when all, of a sudden the main has to go up…..ASAP. ✌🏻

Exactly how airplanes crash. The First officer (copilot) is intimidated by the captain and even knowing imminent danger is approaching they’re reluctant to speak up. Both get a say. Captain has final authority. A good captain will value the opinion of the FO, FM/ helmsman. A good habit to get into when changing any course, speed, adjustment call out what you’re doing and the other echo and acknowledge the change.
@TheSailingBisonАй бұрын
Great tip! I also like the echo technique - used it a lot while working construction. Can't be too careful in regards to one's safety!

You need a topping lift to hold the outboard end of pole, the sail is not enough to hold it up.
@TheSailingBisonАй бұрын
Lol, yes we have (and use) all required lines. We adjust as needed once the whisker pole is secured to both the sheet and the mast. We've found it easier to maneuver while the lines are loose (:

Slow the boat down so you can land the fish.
@TheSailingBisonАй бұрын
Good idea!
@riverratt8626Ай бұрын
Yes, slow the boat down, the odds of landing fish at 4 knots is slim to zero, there is too much pressure on the line & the hook. One is going to break or pull the hook out of the fish, this is why you see fisherman backing up onto the fish when they catch a larger fish. You have to be able to reel it in as fast as possible with the least amount of strain on the gear and to avoid the sharks getting it. I know this is a pain in the ass in a sailboat but it has to be done if you want to land fish. A decent fish is worth 200 dollars in fillets at grocery store price.

Hey hey hey 😁 what type of work did you and Will do in the past? What is/was your favorite? How did you find a passion for sailing? OMG that was scary watching Will fight the whisker pole.... Damn fish stealing shark 😮 Have a blessed week ❤ ~Jamie in Michigan~

Hey Jamie! Are you asking about boat related work or career related work? Want to make sure I give you the right answer haha. Will has always been keen on the ocean, and started sailing as a teenager. He got me involved and I fell into it headfirst 😂 We decided really early on in our relationship this was something we wanted to do together!

Hi Em, I was asking more about career work though when you get around to boat build/refit skills y'all have attained I'll be here (Lord willing)😁.... I love the water ❤️ it's so multifaceted and diverse 🙄 I mean just look at all the uses, We are mostly water 💦 lol, you drink it, bathe, sail, laundry, cooking, cleaning, swimming, fishing.... I digress 🤣🤣🤣 ~J

hi guys, great to see yous again! I have a question, what is the make and size of your sailing vessel? I,ve seen alot of boats but I really like the way your helm is positioned. Also the make and horsepower of the engine? If your not comfortable giving out this info thats cool.
@TheSailingBison2 ай бұрын
Hey, Jim! Appa is a Catalina Morgan 440. We have a Yanmar 4JH3-TE, 75 HP engine in our vessel. CM440s are a bit difficult to find on the market bc there were only 60-some made, but if you do find one we can't recommend them enough - we love Appa! Haven't had boat envy once (;
@davidperham89728 күн бұрын
Hi Em, ok I came back to this post because you were Ratled by being on the Helm. If you 2 have decided that the person on the Helm is the Captain the. (You) are 100% in charge and you are responsible for the boat while in motion ( power or sail) and it is you that calls for the sails up,trim,or need to reef etc. Unless extreme imergancy you are the only one at the helm (or Auto-helm) plus you’re responsible to communicate with your crew as to what you expect of them. Good sinerio earlier re: Airline pilot & co-pilot. You are wife and husband. -- so-- Don’t be afraid to Yell at Him-- He’s a Big Boy ,he Learn ! Your welcome, now I’m ready to subscribe 🇨🇦Cdn. Dave🇨🇦 Don’t mind me I’m old salt 76+ & grounded to my Layzboy !
