Some words of advice, sorry if anyone else has mentioned this already : Your MRE isn't heating up enough because you aren't putting enough water in the pouch, ALSO, you're not supposed to put the water in FIRST. The water should go in the pouch AFTER the meal pocket. You insert the sealed pockets in the heater sleeve then pour enough water up to the line. Then you want to sit the pouch at a 45⁰ angle, NOT flat. You will get much better and hotter results, I guarantee it.

38:20 That's not hydrophobic, that's actually the leidenfrost effect. Basically it's turning to steam so fast that there is a cushion of steam underneath the water drop keeping it away from the stove. That's why it bounces around so much. If it was hydrophobic it would just roll around.

This was an evening well spent enjoying this adventure! I haven't tasted an MRE in decades. I had a buddy that brought some home from his Army weekends. They do keep you well fed when you would need it! I have to admit that both the Lithuanian and Russian MREs made my stomach growl a little for some heartier food. I noticed they were more high carbs and proteins and the Humanitarian one was more sugars and veggies, perhaps for a wider dietary range? That was an interesting comparison. Favorite parts of the vid? MOUSE CROSSING tied with the stream bubbles under the ice. I would love to watch longer videos of BOTH those cool phenomena!

I liked the one with the frazzle ice flow. I was hoping to see some this winter here in California, but the water Temps have been too warm. Perhaps we'll get lucky to see some with the next storm or perhaps next year? We don't see it often here in California, but it's a treat when we do! I haven't ever tried an MRE while camping, but they have a lotta calories, and would be great if hiking. I used to have almost exclusively freeze-dried foods for backpacking, unless I was car camping - tgrn we'd have tri-tip in marinade or pin wheels (skirt steak rolled up with bacon) and some kind of bars, like a Power Bar for fiber. There's nothing like some great food cooked outdoors to go with a camping trip. It makes the trip.

Great idea to relive grease from your hands. I never would have thought of that let alone scrub your cooking pans with it. Then boil water to clean out completely. Just one of the reasons I enjoy watching your videos. Not only are they entertain you also educate me about things. Cool set up with the tent & stove. Guess it kept that space warmer than you thought. Would be interesting to see you use it again & see any differences from it getting so hot than cool then hot again. Thanks for being us along on these trips. Live in SE Ohio & we only got a few days of snow but not accumulation. The stream inside your tent was a cool idea.

An idea for another time - if your bed gets wet like that, use your hot frying pan like an iron to dry it. That is basically all that the old bed-warmers were - a frying pan with a tight fitting lid that they filled with hot coals. Then they would just pass it between the sheets to warm up the bed.

The coloration on the pipe shows visually the level of heat. 400-450f will be golden, 500-550f will be blue, etc. If it gets hot enough, it'll go back to grey. It's pretty interesting, the colors are actually a form of rust as the metal heats up it interacts more vigorously with the oxygen the changes reflect that. I use that color change to temper steel in my shop to whatever level of softness I need after hardening.

I use a spark arrestor on my tent stoves and never had a problem with creosote buildup even with a damper. Not sure if it will help but I also use some aluminized Kevlar around the stove-pipe where it goes through the pipe jack in the tent. The warpage and discoloration seems pretty normal for stainless stoves and they all seem to glow after a few hours of use especially with the air vents. Even the titanium stoves warp to an extent. I carry some 000 steel would to clean the stove pipe after use helps keep down the carbon and mess when packing. The packable stoves are awesome and can be used when there is not enough snow coverage for using a sled, I especially like the one piece rolled stovepipe packs super light, no worries about leaking and easy to clean. Great content - love the Latvian and Estonian MRE”s !

Great video! When I fought fire for the Forest Service back in the 90s, we were issued MREs for our packs but they didn't come with heaters so someone told us to leave the entree foil pouch in the cardboard sleeve, stand it on it's end, leaned against a rock and light the bottom on fire. As the flames consume the cardboard and move up the pouch, it heats up the contents pretty good, better than eating them cold at least.

Love your videos mate, just a suggestion. With those kind of rations the packages are made to be ‘boil in the bag’. If your not using the heating element just boil water and drop the packets in for a few minutes. They cook evenly and you can you can use the boiled water for drinking after it’s cooled down. Also saves on cleaning! Be safe and keep doing what you do

Hello! So many ideas came to me about the tent, etc. If you want to use the tent in the summertime where there is no handy depth of snow to plant the pole into, you might get a piece of pipe the pole fits almost snugly into. Cut one end of the pipe into spikes to hammer into the ground wherein you may stand the tent pole. You worry that you have to nearly fall into the side of the tent to open the zip. Maybe a stick with a ring attached could make the The pan is overweight on the handle, but that kind of pan can be used to make omelets on a chef's small propane/butane stove (or a camp stove!). Omelet chefs start the omelet in the pan. When it is cooked enough on one side they flip half of the pan's contents over forming a semi-circle. And the pan is leaned against the stove burner so it continues to cook more slowly. To balance the pan you might look for a fork or spoon to balance the handle (or some weight to counter-balance it). To make the fork or spoon hold itself to balance the pan handle, cut a slot into into the handle of the fork or spoon to settle opposite the pan handle. Good camping inn later times too! __
