Twenty-four hours of conbini food in Tokyo: that's easy. Egg salad sandwiches from Lawson for breakfast. Coffee. Onigiri and green salad for lunch-FamilyMart. Apple juice. Dried squid for afternoon snack. Curry bowl for dinner-7-11. Or kaarage from FamilyMart. Dinner washed down with Suntory "Strong".

One of my mistakes visiting Japan for the first time was getting too hyped about Combi’s. Yeah they are fantastic and everywhere but it’s almost too easy to settle for a combini meal instead of going out and sitting down somewhere. Really are missing out if you’re sitting in your hotel room with a bowl of microwaved noodles and a sando!

This konbini episode was awesome! Thanks for doing this, Sarah-san! Convenience stores in Japan are a totally viable option for tourists on the go. Prices are reasonable and the food is decent quality. I think even the 'junk food' options you chose today are still healthier than what's available at American convenience stores! And I love that so many of them even have a nice little dining area in-store. I'll join the chorus in saying yes, please do the 'Sarah's healthy version' episode. You've hit the top 3, how about some of the other chains within, say, the top 10? Mini Stop, Daily Yamazaki, etc.? I know in the Kansai area, a lot of the local train lines had their own convenience chains that you could find at the stations or on the platform. I think Hankyu's was Asnas (As Soon As), if I'm not mistaken. I'm going off memory from over a decade ago, so I could be a little out of touch. But I wonder, if that's still the case, maybe you could cover some of the local konbini chains around the Tokyo area. I'm planning to visit Osaka for a few weeks later this summer with my wife. It'll be my first time back in Japan since 2008!! I'm looking forward to trying out some of the things you've covered (also TC, Lyssa, Charla, that guy Chris Abroad, etc.). I hope to catch at least one hanabi matsuri while I'm there. I'm looking forward to the eventual boyfriend reveal. He's a lucky man!! I'm sure he knows it 🙂

I find it hilarious that 7-11 is considered a good store in Japan when the 7-11s we have in the U.S are sketchy, have a horrible selection, sell expired food, and the "ready to eat" food is very likely to give you the bubbleguts.

They've been trying to replicate the Japanese convenience store experience in the US, but everything is expensive & the quality is low. We only shop there for convenience - at a markup.
@seerasan3 ай бұрын
Oh interesting to hear they’re trying that! It certainly wouldn’t work in Australia either.. I know Korea & Taiwan also have a similar convenience store experience to Japan, but no where in the West (yet) 😮💨

@@seerasanYeah we used to have Famima which was a stylish fancy offspring from your Family Mart in the early 2000s. They were everywhere here in California, and I miss them dearly. 😢😢😢
@misericorde38703 ай бұрын
@seerasan I can't ever seeing it happen here in the west. The markup for a convenience store is too high compared to a regular grocery store to make it work, not to mention eating food at a lot of the 7-11s and etc. here is just tempting food poisoning.
@asean10153 ай бұрын
7-ELEVEN was acquired by Japan and is currently headquartered in Japan, but in fact, other Asian and Oceanian countries such as Australia, Korea, and Taiwan are managed under permanent licenses from 7-ELEVEN in the US. So it is closer to the US than Japan. (Only China's 7-ELEVEN has Japan involved in management because there are many Japanese convenience stores such as Lawson and FamilyMart in China, and they cannot compete using the US method. Therefore, 7-ELEVEN in China has a very wide selection of products.) This year, Japan is increasing its investment in 7-ELEVEN in Australia and will be involved in management. So there is a possibility that 7-ELEVEN in Australia will change dramatically.
