I have discovered a secret. When you figure out how long it will take to see everything you want in an area, double it. We kept a homebase but we also have someone to take care of it. The very definition of the word boondock is: rough, remote, or isolated country. The term used by many for Walmart/Cracker Barrel staying is "Lot-docking".

Hey Roy! Appreciate your points as always... well I didn't think to look up the definition but that makes a ton of sense... dry camping or lot docking are probably more accurate... But I couldn't agree with you more on the doubling the time. Because otherwise traveling becomes too exhausting. It's supposed to be fun- not "work"! And yes, especially after 2020... having a home base is nice!

You know how sometimes when you go to Church, it feels like the sermon was prepared exactly for you? That was the way this video hit me. As Amy and I continue to contemplate buying our first RV, this video hit on a lot of topics which were on my mind and added clarity to many things. Because of where I am in the process of still seeking an RV and all the things that go with it, I’m not technically even a newbie. But this video was very helpful and will help shape many decisions when that time comes. Thank you!

I am a retired over the road trucker. The wife and I lived in a double sleeper Volvo big rig for 5 years together. Watching the 2 of you is like looking in the mirror. Being together 24/7 brought Kelly and I very close and strong. We are equally yoked in the guiding hand of the Most High. We both desperately want to do the RV nomad lifestyle since we have kids both on the west coast and the east coast as well as grandbabies. Of all the RV channels I've explored, yours is the MOST honest for me. You guys are legit, because I know how road life can be as a trucker. God bless you and yours. Consider me a fan.

I am new to your channel, & love it. I was semi-retired until Covid hit last year, & I was forced in to full retirement. I found out I cannot sleep until I feel like getting up in the morning - Mother nature had something to say about that. When both of you reach your early 70's like I am, you will find out you wake up periodically & have to go to the bathroom(I kept this clean for the sake of You Tube & your lovely daughter). Keep up the good work.

I prefer the terms dry camping and boondocking. Boondocking is dry camping out in the country somewhere. Dry camping can be done in a parking lot, stealth camping parked somewhere, civilized, mooch docking at someone's property, or even dry camped at a campground in an overflow area.

Staying in parking lots is a form of dry camping but it's not boondocking. There are other terms that might refer to that like Wally docking. Keep in mind that there are a lot of RV parks that are like parking lots because all the RVs are crammed so close together. Boondocking takes place out in the boonies no where near cities or any place that has facilities or hookups! Even campgrounds without hookups is not boondocking. That is dry camping. My parents taught us kids to boondock back in the 60s. Their 16 foot Aristocrat travel trailer only had residential style light fixtures in it. My dad put a residential-style plug-in receptacle on the back of the truck and put 12 volt light bulbs in all the residential light fixtures so they had lights when boondocking. Their trailer had a pressurized fresh water tank that made the water look cloudy when it came out. And that trailer also had a pull out poty like a regular drawer with a plastic bag under it. It was a small trailer but we loved boondocking. No one to bother us and no one for us to bother. Just the six of us. In the eighties I bought my own 24 foot travel trailer fully self-contained that I loved living in that for four years till I got married. I desperately want to go back to that lifestyle. By the way, I hope for your sakes that you got your braking system figured out and corrected on your truck and trailer. The tow vehicle should never ever have to stop the trailer. BUT, if your truck breaks ever fail the trailer would have to help to stop the truck along with the emergency brake. Have a great day.

With retirement in the near future realizing my 40 yr dream. I believe that there are some options out there for home basing. I will Domicile in South Dakota (insurance, taxes & mail) and have 2 permanent locations to base out of. Winters in South FL. and Summers in Nebraska on the Farm. Having family property in both locations set up 2 permanent sights with a building to store the things I like to do around those areas hobby and more specifically tools I need around once a year. A place where I can have a more normal life with friends and family. As you said with all the ajustments my companion will be a dog until God provides me someone like minded that can handle a wide variety of living lifestyles urban to country. With the 1200 percent increase in RV sales this year spending an average of three months in each location will give me 6 months to travel and explore in more off seasons for space availability. With 2 places set up like that, I will be able to lock the door hop on a plane and travel that way not only being more secure than public storage but big cost savings once set up.

ANOTHER video I just loved. I am so happy that you discovered the slow-down-and-enjoy method of traveling. Awhile back I mentioned that, and to really see and experience just what our beautiful country has to offer. Sooooo happy you did it, and “got” it! I’ll bet Sage is lovin’ it too. She is such a sweetheart, give her a big hug from me, please. Depending upon who you talk to, the definition of boon docking is staying overnight at a place where there are no water, electric or sewer hookups. Tim says “no, that means you’re out in the woods or desert somewhere with no hook ups!” Bull...without hookups, you’re boon docking. I knew you’d like it Mercedes, as it is so nice not to have a ton of other campers ten feet from your rig, you can be as loud as you want, and enjoy a place where no one else is, and not feel like you’ve just spent the night in a “parking lot”, the way some rv “resorts” are configured. You’ve got enough water, battery power and hopefully some solar, so you can “escape” the humanity rat race for a few days or even longer. Mercedes, hon, I am so happy you enjoy driving the truck and fifth wheel. So much fun once you get the hang of it. Tim and I actually looked for several years before we bought our motorhome. We had a self-contained pop up trailer for twenty years, loved it, but needed something we could pull off the road for potty stops and less length to park, but most of all, less work he/we have to do...we are getting older and love the relative ease of traveling in a motorhome. Did you try out Wildflower cafe/bread company in Sedona? It’s at 101 N. AZ hwy 89A, the main road in town. Fabulous sandwiches with seating outdoors, giving you that gorgeous view of the red rocks. Anyway, we were there last month and would have LOVED to stay longer. I’ve gone on enough now. Please continue to stay safe, travel safely, and love each other! Love to you all, Virginia

Boondocking is essentially camping without hookups. You may also hear it referred to as 'dry camping'. Often, dry camping means staying in a campground without hookups, whereas, boondocking typically means staying in a completely undeveloped area.

John and Mercedes, I retired, sold everything including my house and am now RVing full time alone, working on 6 months. I have had to adjust so much but love the place my RV takes me. I also do KZbin videos and it takes so much time to edit them. I work about 20 hours a week on editing. I refuse to spend more time on them. That is why I am 2 months behind with only doing one video a week and doing 3 to 5 adventures a week. LOL So I kind of know what you are going through. Happy thanksgiving. Don

We sold our home a year ago and launched full time in our 38' Class A. We love you guys and your videos and have been enjoying them since early 2019. This our first comment. The one concern we both have with, in regards to our transition, if we had not cut the strings to our sticks & bricks home, it would have left us too easy an out when things seem uncomfortable. We have times, especially with 2020 and all of it's unique challenges, where if we were able to quit this life & go back to our house, we may not have made the daily choice of sticking it out with the rv life.

"Red Roads" are the way to travel, whether full timing or overlanding. Boondocking is staying without hookups of any kind. In MY opinion, actual boondocking is staying in one location without hookups, off the grid, for several days and ENJOYING IT!! We used to go to a lake west of Buena Vista, CO and stay on NFS land in a beautiful meadow. There was a stream for fishing, room for my daughter to ride her bike and play, and space for the wife to do whatever she wanted to do. Now my GF and I go Overlanding. We take the county roads, trying to stay off pavement as much as possible. We take the 4wd roads that lead us to places few others can get to. We hunt for out of the way places, in addition to spending time in state and national parks, and we stay in motels and VRBOs.

Mercedes Survivor 2021!!!! That would be so bad ass!!! If you’re looking for new places to check out I would encourage you to look at the iron range in northern Minnesota. I stay at a municipal campground named Sherwood Forest in the town of Gilbert Minnesota. It overlooks an old iron mine that is now lake Ore-be-gone. They have full hook up sites and they can accommodate large rigs. I’m seventy feet nose to tail with my truck, fifth wheel, and utility trailer. The site I normally get backs up to the bluff overlooking the lake so my bay window has an awesome view. There is also an off road vehicle park about five minutes away that you can go ATVing at or take your Jeep off roading there as well. If you want to know more let me know and I’ll do what I can for you. Another awesome video!!!!!

My wife and I do destination RVing. We have a home base and go places from there. With Covid19 we've done the state parks. Most don't have hookups, which is fine for a week. Looking forward to really getting out again a month at a time. We try to bake in extra time in out trips so that if we see something along the way we can stop and do that. I like having a home base because I like working on the camper. I have a workshop where I can make improvements and repairs on the camper. "YOU bring YOU wherever YOU go." Aaaaaamen I do not consider stopovers/overnighters in parking lots boondocking, however these stopovers can be a great way to hone your boondocking skills before actually setting up for a two or three night remote BLM/USFS stay. It clearly got Mercedes interested in boondocking, part of the overall RV experience 😉👍 John, I get more done late at night too. The quiet is amazing and does wonders for zero distractions. The problem is that I am still an early riser... 😂 Happy Thanksgiving!

Why not fish? Buy a couple of rods and stuff them in a 4" ABS tube. You could strap that to the side of the ladder, to the roof, or in a pass-through. Then all you need is a tackle box. Another option is when you get someplace beautiful, look for a fishing guide. A lot of times they'll have gear you can use.

You are talking about Lot Docking. So parking in a parking lot. There is also Mooch Docking. Parking in someones driveway. Boon docking is usually away from everything like out on BLM land. We like to Boondock and normally spend about 300 days a year doing that. The other is mooch docking. However where we stay we typically pay our way be doing remodel jobs, or mowing the grass. So usually mooch would be you are using resources from your family or friends and not paying them. For the first time ever we have accepted a workamp job in a resort in Yuma and so we will be tied to that for 5 months. Don't think we would be happy living in a resort all the time but for the winter this gig is pretty nice. Have fun and Thanks for your comments and time spent helping others.

This was so helpful. I'm struggling with getting rid of some things. Unsure what to keep. Nervous because I will be starting out full time from Northern Kentucky in January. Also it has been nearly 11 years since I've driven while pullling something. You are such a blessing. I feel much more at ease after watching this episode. I would have rather it been better timing but my husband died of sudden heart attack & I wasn't able to financially keep the house (prior bad decisions). We've loved camping for years & with multiple kids we have lived in motor homes we owned for a few months at a time while moving from house to house in various states. We stopped little over 10 years ago because my husband had muscular dystrophy and needed to go into wheelchair full time & didn't want to get a different camper because of showering & bathroom issues.

Creating routine would be big for us. Oe of the best benefits of being mobile is seeing the country but having a consistent schedule would be key. Definitely do a video of things you have but don't need. Perhaps also thinking you need something and use it for a while then it gets but in a storage compartment and forgotten because it wasn't really necessary. Good point about RV lifestyle evolution. It's okay to make a change when it makes sense. Excellent video as usual! OMG - Lone boondocking could be a great video!

And it can’t be boondocking if you can wake up, walk 50’ and order a Sunrise Sampler with a side of bacon and a coffee! 😜 Now on to more important stuff, John. Great advice! You have confirmed much of my thought process. Just got my RV last month....finally after 2 1/2 years of research and learning! Because of the extensive research I did, I initially wanted a small Class A, but realized a 24ft B+/C with the right floor plan would give me all I need much more economically. Like you said, just got the basic supplies, and will adjust as I go. For me, I do want to sell the S&B and full time, but for now since I live in S Florida, I'm going to spend the next 4-6 months camping around the state once every 2-3 weeks for 4-5 days at a time, get to know my rig, and also learn about the lifestyle. I'm sure I'll realize the things I'm going to need , and also NOT need as you stated. Thx for another great video, and congrats on 100K subs.....and yes you take you with you......"Wherever you go, there you are!"

John and Mercedes... could of more thoughts...we just figured out that on average we spent $70 per day for two people including fuel, food, occasionally dined out or got carry out food...We went 7,000 miles and averaged 19 MPG... that's 369 gallons of fuel at $2.25 per gallon...less than $850 in fuel for the entire trip.... Yeah, we have a Class B Mercedes Benz Sprinter 3500... I don't know how I could have done that for less... We stayed at a lot of Walmart's and Cracker Barrel restaurants....it was great..... Oh, one more thing..we have a vacation home that we stayed at so we were not on the road for the whole time... We have a separate residence to drive to.... it's a nice setup.

Terrific information/advice! Boondocking is a very nebulous term. In it's purest form it means camping without hookups or an assigned space. So IMHO, if your in a Walmart parking lot or 20 miles out an unmarked dirt road you are boondocking. For me I prefer to look at it as just a variant of "dry camping". Have a blessed Thanksgiving! First, you have learned a great deal. Second I would not go with a Class c, or a. In case of repair, where do you stay? Yes a towed vehicle would help with that. But now you are back to adding length. A smaller travel trailer, with a good tow vehicle is the best balance. Just be ready to pay for a proper hitch. You put enough anti-sway on the trailer, and you will be fine. You could go down to a much smaller bunkhouse. What storage space you loose in the trailer. You make up with the bed of the truck. Just add a camper shell.
