Elliot, I feel your pain mate, that one was nicely water damaged. Another classic eBay buy!!! I wished I lived closer to you because it would be fun to work on that one together. The LCD may be damaged as well because I have a water damaged one that displays but you can see ghost images on it. I think that Switch will be an uphill battle and probably unfixable, but it would be a good opportunity for you to try out the hot air station with very little to lose as it is probably junk anyway. I will pass on what little knowledge I have and I am sure Steve (TronicsFix) will help you out. On the plus side, the chassis, foil cover, rear cover and heat pipe etc. may come in handy in the future and are probably worth the little amount you paid. I really enjoyed the video regardless of outcome :-)

I will help you with some tips. It's my profession to repair water damaged iPhones and Macbooks and love your videos. Since you don't own a ultrasonic bath and and special liquid you can try this: Alcohol will NOT breakdown watermarks or oxidation effectively. Use deminralized water and household water stain remover for the shower and a toothbrush. After that, Check oxidated capacitors (black solder joints) with multimeter for short to ground. Check connector for disconnected legs. Use an usb Ampere meter to check if your switch draw any normal charging current. And the cable that was eaten by oxidation is for your LCD backlight, if I'm correct. That's why you have no image. Fix that first. You are in a learning process and this is the next step you get better in fixing stuff and boost up your skills. Out of comfort means you are growing. You can do it!

@@_FFFFFF_ The water stain remover is called here in my country (Netherlands) "Antical" . Its spray liquid to clean a blocked shower head and make the metal shine like new. So also a corroded water damaged board will shine like new:) I'm not sure if Amaz 11107 will give the same result

FYI I have not given up yet. I spent about 3 hours trying to scrub the board clean, and checking the caps with a multi meter. I figured out which chips are broken so at least I might be able to replace them. But ultimatly, no luck today at least. If I can't find another faulty switch with different problems which I can salvage the motherboard from, I will continue trying to work at this motherboard. Failing that I'll send it to my mate Vince

With the info on the video it makes me think that, if we believe the fathers story, he realized that it wasnt working and tried to fix it himself and upon realizing he had no chance to fix it he mounted it and sold it to cut on loses.

Probably someone spilled some water on the switch and opened it up. Probably around the capacitor the switch was mostly corroded so somebody tried to scrub it down with knife but scrathed the main board too. So seller sell it like never opened to hide the traces.

In every commercial for the switch you can only see teens and young adults, because that is the target group for this specific console. Also, the switch doesn't have that many offical kids games (as in developed by Nintendo) but rather only 3rd party games while the big Switch titles Botw, Mario Oddyse SSBU cater to a teen audience

From what I can tell; it was partially submerged. If that's the case, I can image it was powered up when it was, that means quite a few sensitive components are fried. You could always try and see where the power rails are and see if it is indeed pumping out the voltages required fro the Switch to run, that's normally your first step.

1:07 "Q: When did it stop breaking?" ... A: Oh it never stopped breaking ... in fact it is still most certainly broken rofl Realistically though the board is knackered. It clearly had the liquid sat in it for awhile (which is why the corrosion is so widespread and severe). This coupled by the fact that someone went in there and tried to scrape it off means that there are likely multiple failed components/traces. Save the parts you can verify as working and toss the rest. I recently had a similar experience with a vita slim I purchased where the seller was less than honest. I can tell soda was spilled on it, resulting in sticking buttons, and he opened it to clean it. In the process though he broke two of the zif connector latches and luckily gave up and put it back together at that point. I was able to bodge the connectors on and it works perfectly now, but that was just dumb luck.

I'm new to this stuff, and I was wondering how come the alcohol doesn't damage anything? I know water obviously damages it, but why not the alcohol? Probably a dumb question, but I'm curious.

In short, the alcohol is high content with low water. *Isopropyl Alcohol is used* in medical fields to sterilize cuts, scraps, etc, not to wash your windows. So this is why Isopropyl is used for cleaning, with it's low water content and very high alcohol content it dries fast, and isn't conductive. *About conductivity* salinity, salt concentration, is a big factor in conductivity (for water) , Salt Water, aka oceans, if struck by lightning can travel 5 miles if what I read is correct. *Fresh Water* has contaminates, whether that be chemicals or organisms (tap water, rivers, etc.) those electrons in chemicals/organisms help transfer electricity (Think about a guy with epilepsy, the person during a Grand Mal (the one seen most in TV/Movies) is having their nervous system being in a spasm because of the electricity in their brains thus "shorting out" their internal circuits, the reason I said this tidbit is to say that all organisms have electrons in them.) *Distilled Water* so, without any salt content, without any organisms/chemicals, etc this Distilled Water should be safe right? Ideally Distilled Water is safe, because without an /abundance/ of ions it does not conduct electricity /very well/ BUT still does. *(This is the TL;DR)* *Back to Isopropyl Alcohol*, it dries /very/ fast, and is quite clean (as in very little - if any - impurities) because of the uses it has in the medical field (sterilize/sanitize) so it makes the best option to use on electronics due to the drying near instantly and having no salinity that may cause corrosion or leave behind contaminates. *TL;DR*

Hey man! I always watch your videos, and seems like when the problems are down to complex electronics you usually give up for the lack of expertise on that area. I live in Ireland, no so far from you and I'm pretty good with electronics, if I'm allowed to say so myself, and I always repair my own consoles (or buy faulty and repair) too. If you want, you can send me stuff like that for repair. In that case I believe the problem would be solved by replacing the power management IC and maybe some of the caps around it. In any case, keep up the good work!

I bought a "not working for parts only" first gen Nintendo switch off e-bay. usually these first gen ones go for a ton cause they have un-patched firmware and are good for jailbreaking/CFW. I got mine for a bargain, and it turned out to just have a fully uncharged battery, and the SD card slot was disconnected, nothing else wrong with it.... easy fix. Very happy with my new [old] Switch. It's screen is perfect, the case only had a couple scratches on the back, but other than that it's in great shape!

Yeah Elliot good luck with these Switches, I got two really cheap and they seemed to work perfectly but both have big hardware issues that I currently don't have the tools to fix. At best if your WiFi chip is faulty you can reflow the solder with hot air, at worst there are multiple hardware issues. These things are pretty powerful but also very delicate.

did you try putting it into through your ultra sonic cleaner after you saw it been liquid damaged??

No, left it on a plate of IPA and shook it every 5 mins or so.

​@@TheRetroFuture invest in one not a cheap one tho it'll clean up all that corrosion and corrosion that may be the under the chips sometimes the ultra sonic is all you need for liquid damage sometimes

Hey man, been a long time subscriber and love your vids ( currently binging them all ). Question if I may? So I unfortunately have the old hac-001 switch with the old 3600mah battery. Can I replace the battery with a hac-03 4310mah battery? As I know the new hac-001 -01 switch has some kind of processor that can handle a 4310mah battery but I don't know if the old switch can handle a 4310mah battery? All help appreciated.
