As Canadians we pay the highest cell phone rates in the G7, so their bill is actually not that outrageous for here. They are likely subsidizing latest model phones with one of the big 3 companies though. We get around it by always having phones that are a few models old, buying them outright, and using a cheaper service. So they could probably cut it in half, but we just don’t have the really low rates the USA has.

And $120 for internet is not too outrageous here. Though, you definitely have to regularly contact your provider and get promotional deals to lower that! I pay $100 for fiber, but it's only a deal for 24 months, then it goes up to $200 a month. But if I call my provider (Telus), they resign me back up at the original promotion rate.

I'm Canadian and could only successfully get my phone bill down to $50 monthly through Koodo. but I wish we had Mint mobile in Canada

$123 for internet is by no means high, unless you want the slowest speeds they got.

What's unfortunate is that she has private student loans. Federal loans just had the interest eliminated on them, and some provincial governments eliminated interest on provincial student loans as well (though, I am not sure Alberta did...my guess is no, because that would be way too progressive for Alberta 😅). Also, health insurance in Canada isn't really as much of a thing. You can still buy it for dental (though this woman is a dentist, so probably not something she has to worry about), drugs, etc., but remember that we have socialized health care, so the health costs of having a baby aren't usually as high up front. Definitely some differences between the Canadian and US systems there! 😊

$1400 minimum payment on a $15k credit card balance is insane. I wonder what card that is.

They’re Canadian. The vast majority of our cards are in the 19.99% range, but it’s not calculated monthly like that so I don’t understand where that number is coming from.

I would throw the 8k on the 15k credit card debt asap and then build back the emergency funds

I like the EF as first. Mint mobile I prepaid for the year$250. Plenty of room to improve the "fixed expenses".

Unfortunately, Mint Mobile isn’t available in Canada. As soon as they are, I will be joining up. I pay $23.00 (Canadian dollars) per month for my cell phone, but it doesn’t include much data. I use it just for emergencies. Not sure what company she is with to have such high cell phone costs.

generally this seems very doable! once they finish paying their debt (not that long for the amount of money they owe) they have a very good head start for getting a down payment, etc.

This is interesting .... Americans don't realize how much MORE Canadians are paying for things like phone/internet/food/gas. Their rent is actually very low compared to cities like Toronto. Also .. in terms of health insurance and care- in Canada we don't pay for hospital stays or prenatal appointments. Your first appointment for IVF is covered and more insurance companies through someone's work covers IVF to some degree. I suppose this offsets the phone and internet bill lol.
