Don’t see why everyone calls this a lady or child rifle. Had a Win 243 years ago, wish I still had it. Super flat line of sight that round is smokin fast.

It’s pure fudd lore. Went shopping with my girlfriend get her a hunting rifle. Got her a wetherby vanguard in .243. The gun store owner made a comment along the line of “that’s a great round for women and kids”. The reason I went for .243 was so we didn’t have to buy different calibers when we go hunting.

I’ve been using a .243 BAR as my primary whitetail gun for 16 years. NEVER had any deer get more than 40ft after being shot with that round. Most less than 20ft. Also I have never found any lead in them, always a through and through shot. I also worked for a deer butcher for 5 seasons to become a better butcher myself and to understand shot placement destruction, and the destruction different rounds cause. After all that experience, I stand by my .243

I think it's a great rifle, I think they call it a lady or kid gun because it's light weight with less recoil than a 308, 300 win or 30-06 etc

I could kick myself for never buying a Ruger #1. In any caliber. Some years ago I was tossed up with the #1 or a Browning Falling block 1885 in 30-06. I bought the Browning. Loved it, wish I still had it. I preferred the open hammer of the Browning over the internal hammer of the Ruger mostly. But one day I will have one I hope.

Before ballistic calculators we figured our come ups using the drop charts. Divide the amount of drop by the yardage. Example - drop at 500 yds = 60 inches . 60 divided by 5 = 12 . So with a 100 yd zero and turret on -0- you would dial 12 inches up, or 48 clicks with 1/4 moa clicks. Works with each distance and will have you really close. Then fine tune if needed. Just thought I’d share. Keep shooting who_tee_who! And I will too!

yeah "drop" has to be realized with ALL guns. pistols, shottys, as well as rifles. and it also has to be learned how different ammo will behave. and how ammo will perform differently in hot, humid vs. dry hot and dry cold. altitude will effect the rounds big time as well. your position will effect where you hit. shooting is a science. 90 percent mental. cause you gotta do everything the same way every time in order to make the correct adjustments. fun stuff.

I sighted mine in at the oddball of 150 yards. Most my shots are 100 to 200 yards . After I sight in at 150 , I shoot at 200 yards after find where I am shooting . Then , I move to 100 yards and check where I am hitting there . This is the first hunting season that I will be using my 243 . It sat in the gun safe around 4 years before I decided to put a scope on it . I usually hunt with 308 and a 223 .I have never hunted with a 243 in my 53 years. I bought it because I couldnt pass up the good deal on the rifle .I will be using hornady whitetails or federal power shok . Keep the vids coming . We appreciate them .

You just showed why many of us experienced hunters zero their guns @ 200 yards. Ballistic coefficient really don't mean much inside 200 yards or so. A 200 yard zero with that same 100gr bullet hits less than 2" above or below the line of sight out to 230 yards - essentially a 230 yard point blank range. Good enough for groundhog or larger game.

@homeostasis4me485 2 жыл бұрын
Why, exactly?
@edarnold1426
@edarnold1426 2 жыл бұрын
@@homeostasis4me485 Because on deer you have about a 6 inch kill zone on them, and anything between 1 to 250 yards there is no hold over. I can normally tell if a deer is 100 yards or less so I myself actually aim a little low under 100 or right at that since I will be inches high. However if it's 300 yards I just need to aim a couple inches high. Actually anything from 1 to 300 is in the kill zone on a deer. Always check ballistics with your gun and the ammo that you are using though! My barrel is actually 26 inches so I'm getting a extra 70 feet per second over a standard 24 inch barrel, and if it's a 22 inch barrel deduct about 70 fps. I actually wouldn't know why he is using a 100 gain bullet on groundhogs though. I always used 80 grains until they came out with the 58 grain bullets. 80 grains were way over kill on woodchucks. I decapitated a groundhog at 60 yards with a 80 grain soft point, and literally the whole thing at least ten feet from where I hit it , and at 220 yards from a back hit I took the whole right shoulder off and opened the chest up to the center of it. The later woodchuck never moved though, as it was eating berries halfway up a fence. I also saw a 80 grain bullet take a deer out at 350 yards. It ran about 50 yards and piled up.

Gravity is always the same, on a straight, flat shot, the bullet will hit the ground at the same time as it would if you drop just the bullet from your hand, from the same height as the muzzle, that is why holdover is used, when you adjust the scope for a further distance you are adding holdover. Firing a bullet doesn't overcome the force of gravity.

I love the concept of the situation and I know you'll understand mine, for some of us even if our average shot is under 100 we hunt places where we might shoot 300-400 so we split the difference. For me that's 1-1/2 inches high for any caliber with a velocity over 2700fps for a 200 yard zero and in my 308-300 mag rifles that gives me a drop of 5-1/2 to 8 inches at 300 yards with no need to hold high until 237 yards and zero hold under

I don't hunt , but I reload my own ammo for 308 Winchester , 223 Remington , and 6.5mm Swedish Mauser for target shooting . I find a 250 or 300 yard zero the best for field work . It is easier to hold four inches under at 100 yards and hold dead on at 200 and a smidge over at 250 yards than calculate holdover from 100 . Al ot of scopes have duplex reticles where the center crosshair is Four MOA below the the thicker line above and Four MOA above the the thicker line below . Mil Dot scopes have dots equivalent to 3.6 inches above and he center crosshair . Try zeroing your rifle at the top of the fine crosshair where the reticle gets thick , or at the first Mil Dot above the crosshair . I was a US Navy radar operator for ten years , used angles , Mils and degrees on a daily basis .

Before my dad passed away, he gave me his 6mm (.243 cal), and had it sighted in zero at 400 yards. He also gave me about 500 rounds of reloaded ammo that he made just for that gun. And, he made up a chart for all the way out to 1000 yards. It's so dead on that I don't dare mess with it. I've since killed my two biggest deer with it at about 250-300 yards....you just have to compensate for the distances. That gun, chart and ammo give me so much confidence when i'm out in the field.

Excellent. This is the program I was taught in the Marine Corps - ah - several decades ago. This is the military concept of 'battle sight zero' except the allowable vertical variation was 18 inches (height of a human torso). Since most game animals have a smaller preferred zone, the range is a bit more limited. However, as you pointed out, anywhere in that six inch diameter (imaginary) circle is a proper hit on the deer (for instance), it doesn't matter. And one does not have to fiddle with the sights before shooting, nor figure hold over. Good work.

This video shows exactly why I sight in at 200 rather than 100. Neither is wrong, but with sighting in at 200 the bullet flight path varies less for the more common distances where deer are shot in my area. I live where theres a whole lot more flat than there are trees, so longer distance shots are more common. If I lived in areas where hunting in the trees is more common, than I would sight in at 100 every time. Love your content. WHO TEE WHO!

What happens if You sight in at 200Y with 2 inch high? Will 50 and 100 be ok? Ron Spomer has a way of sighting in the gives him a "window" for ranges from X to Y without change any thing a not be more than Z inch from center. A uses different values for Z depending in type of game. If done this way You only need to know if the animal is to close or to far away.

I wore out my 243. Great accurate, flat shooting caliber. I always loaded 85gr BTH point. I always sight my rifles to hit 1in high at 100 yards. Used to take head shots on Ground hogs out to 300 yards. Had to consider wind drift of course. Many times it would hit 8-12in one way or the other, dirt would kick up and tell me how to adjust, many times the hog didn’t move. At 1in high with a hot load I’d be on at 200 and it’s easy to compensate from there.

What your doing is so very important to shooting. Goes for bow or crossbow as well. You need to get out and shoot. If you can't target practice at 200yrd, you should not be hunting at that distance either. You need to know where your bullet or arrow are going to hit. Not a gun guy, but own them and consider them to be tools just like a shovel. Appreciate your video's!!

Great video as always, WTW. I personally only dial in my whitetail rifles when it's below 35 degrees. I find they can be off a bit if you zero in 80 degree summer weather then use it in 10-20 degree winter. But I use 243 if in tree stand in open field, 270 if on the ground near brush. With the wide grain range of the bullets, those 2 are the only rifles needed for most all game in North America, if you ask me. 🤘😎

I have a youth model Remington. 700 243 that with 100 grain Winchester soft points have accounted for 5 white tail deer, 1 doe and 4 bucks (6 points or above) with 6 shots from 30 yards to 200+ by 5 different people. You don't need a 7 mag or 300 Winchester Mag to kill a southern white tailed deer. OBTW: Scope is set for dead on at 300 yard.

I always shoot my rifles and record my DOPE, but I use the Hornady app a lot while at the range, and if you plug in the right info, it’s pretty accurate. With a good scope, and practice, (and depending on the caliber) holding over is easier than trying to dial it in, within about 300 yards, in my opinion. Over that, use your DOPE and dial it in!

I sight all my centre-fire rifles for a zero of 200 yards. From .22-250 up to .300 Win Mag, they all seem to be about 1 1/2 in. high at 100, 2 to 2 1/2 low at 250, 6 to 7 in. low at 300 and 22 to 24 in. low at 400. So out to 250, I just aim and shoot. For the rare shots beyond 250, I have to think about the drop at distance (I always carry a rangefinder). For example, at 400 I aim for the boiler room and then move up the animal about 2 feet. I don't fiddle with elevation turret adjustments. It's easier and faster to just aim with elevation adjustment of point of aim. I call it, "elevation windage".

With those results the point blank range is not very long on that rifle. Try about 2 inches high at one hundred yards and you will be dead on at 200 yards. 7 inches low at 300 yards. That is if the bullet is traveling at 3000 fps from muzzle.

Well now that was a interesting video and I have always realized that the drop is significant based on distance beyond zero. So what I do is just compensate by raising the crosshairs just a little when I get out to around the 200 yd mark and it's always worked for me pretty good, whether I'm shooting a 308 or my 30 ought 6. I would like to see that same test on either a 308 or a 30 ought 6.
