Josh Pate's MOST Overrated & Underrated Teams (Late Kick Cut)

College Football season is rapidly approaching, and on Late Kick Live Ep 291 Josh Pate compared the JP Poll to the recently released AP Poll and talked about the biggest discrepancies between the two. With Notre Dame being 5th in the AP and 14th in the JP, what is the real story with the Irish? Will a week one loss at Ohio State radically shift the industry opinion? Mississippi State is unranked in the AP while the Bulldogs are 20th in the JP Poll. Are people too quick to discount Mississippi State because of the tough schedule Mike Leach & Co. have to face? What about Arkansas? Could the same be true for Sam Pittman and the Hogs? There also seems to be a very wide discrepancy between the AP having Penn State unranked and the JP Poll having the Nittany Lions at 10. Which teams do you feel are the most underrated and overrated? 2 losses and they are top 10. If they beat Clemson and even hang with OSU at 11-1, #5 will be accurate. It’s really a 3.5 game season OSU 1/6 CL 50/50 USC 50/50 BYU 70/30. ND Oline might catch OSU D not ready like OR last year. Win that 1/6 game and it’s a near lock for playoff. OSU coming off back to back 42+ give ups. Gave up 200+ rushing 4 times and needed 450 yards passing to win 2 of those. Rush for 200+ and OSU maybe 50/50. So … “maybe”.

And OSU did have trouble against the run in 4 games. Good luck - no OR repeat. ND likely to be very tough on the ground. That’s the only way I think it has a chance. And that did cost OSU both its losses - and nearly a third v Utes.

I always have one big question when it comes to preseason rankings. What ranking are you giving? Where you think the standing should be as they take the field on game one? Where you think they will be after game one? Or are you trying to predict where they will be after the final poll. With all the talk about schedule that goes into most preseason polls I would gather most are trying to predict final rankings. If that is the case it is really easy to check if a team is “always over rated”. Look at the last 10 years. Where were they in the preseason polls and where were they in the final polls.

As an ND fan, they do have a lot of unknown variables in this year of a new head coach and flipped coaching staff and unproven QB. I know that their defense is top 10 in the country- and OLine is back to where it should should be with Coach Harry. Week 1 is always scary for every team. They have great Skill players- Chris Tyree/Michael Meyer/ Lorenzo Styles, but the lack of depth at the skill positions due to injuries- Logan Diggs/Avery Davis will hurt. I still see them being a 10 win team. With a tough schedule. Go Irish!

For Penn State, look at them as you should the Baltimore Ravens. Penn State was a top 10 team when Clifford got hurt at Iowa, just like the Ravens were the 1 seed in the AFC when Llamar got hurt for the Ravens. Only difference is the Ravens lost more than just Llamar which kept them down, where as Penn State just needed a QB and they would have been fine.

Michigan fan here, for full disclosure, but I have to wonder if ND wasn't ranked this high to 1: give everyone a "top five" match-up in week one to hype. 2: boost those TV rating (and revenues) week one and 3: beef up Ohio State's resume with a victory over a "top five opponent" to legitimize their placement a #2 over Michigan, setting up that show-down for later in the year. But I agree: the AP poll is as much about hype and emotion as it is data and legit rankings. Which is why it can't be relied on solely as a true ranking system. Truest comment - these polls really estimate projected fewest losses. And gap between 1 and 5 likely 3x gap from 6 to 25. Anything 15-25 is really only 40% chance they are there end of year. 123 likely no worse than 10 EOY 4-7 probably top 15. 8-12 one likely not in top 25 EOY. Rest are just “better than average” to stay top 25.

Penn St. is gonna be really frisky, but watch out for them next year for sure. This a talented and youth laden team. If Allar is legit and WR is good, 2023 could be special for the Nittany Lions. Anybody arguing that a top 5 team HAS to be top 5 the next isn't someone to seriously involve your time with. Top players graduate, and when they do the team ain't the same. Coaches leave. Bad teams pickup good players from the portal or recruiting and should be considered better than before. Basing a ranking strongly off previous years is flawed.

Ok, so I’m a ND fan and I don’t think that they’re #5. However, I don’t think that they’re #14 either. The defense will be terrific. The offense will be good but not explosive. The lack of depth at WR will hurt them against teams a really good defense because they may not have enough fire power. I think that they are #10. That’s my opinion. Any team that doesn’t play a conference schedule and associated championship game should not be in the CFP pending some extreme circumstance. In the case of ND in 2022, that means they crush all non-ranked opponents and handily beat the ranked ones. Table stakes is that a non-conference team in the CFP is undefeated in the regular season. Conference championship teams should be given the benefit of the doubt above non-conference teams, all other things being generally equal. Conference games are more physically/mentally demanding: rivalries, recruiting impact, bragging rights, etc, and are the most likely games for upsets. Additionally, the extra championship game gives more film to their non-conference opponent, provides more opportunity for injuries to the conference team, and allows the non-conference team to recover physically with more time: this is a structural net edge to non-conference CFP teams. I acknowledge that there’s an argument to be made that going 5 weeks between games has the potential to be detrimental to the non-conference team. All my opinion of course; I have no data to support this, and would find this sort of analysis fascinating. As an aside, I think it would be interesting to apply the original BCS scoring system (from 1998) and apply it to end of ‘21 season and pre-rank the ‘22 season (not perfect due to loss of players, agreed). It is arguably the most objective rating system due to strength of schedule calcs: how good were the teams you beat or lost to? This is why it was consistently dumped on by announcers: it didn’t care about their (or coaches) opinions.

As an ND alum, we are overrated. If all the parts were already proven and we had WR depth then sure top 5, but there is way too many question marks. If Freeman and the coaching staff consistently recruit at a high level (~top 7 class) and the players execute with discipline on the field then in 2-3 years maybe that top 5 would make sense. That is a big IF though, as there still are too many unproven parts. Excited to see what the program does. Genuinely haven't been this excited to see ND football since my senior year.

Josh, your poll vs the ap or the coaches, they're two different types of polls. Your's is a power poll while the others are merit based rankings (that admittedly don't start off that way) but I can say this as a Nebraska fan. Even though we were a top 25 team in your poll last year, under no circumstances should we ever be placed on the ap top 25, because we went 3-9. Power polls are nice for betting, but the results on the field has to matter, the scoreboard has to matter. That's why we play the games! That's why the natty is played in January and not August!

ND will lose at least 2 games (at Ohio St and Clemson), and might lose 2 others ( at UNC and at USC). 10-2 is not Top 5, although it might be good enough for Top 10. 9-3 or 8-4 is very possible.

Because Brian Kelly ain't it. Lincoln Riley is a good not elite coach and the overall weakness of the Pac-12 will make him look better than he is. BK is a good not elite coach who will have a hard time consistently winning in the SEC.

@@Jacob-ec6st the difference between the 12th class and a top 5 class is GINORMOUS. So even with a much worse class then the other tier 1 teams. Notre dame was still a tier 1 team and competed with the best. Yet just as pate says they could get dogged after losing to great teams. Teams that beat everyone. Now give bk one of the most talented rosters and the ability to recruit with the bests. And the extra help of having some of the best facilities in the nation and coaching staff. I think he has everything he needs to succeed

ND will not score 24 points on OSU. Could be a beatdown. ND could be a quality team at the end of the year, but will take their lumps in Columbus. They score 14 max on OSU, and OSU is out to make a statement.
