Such a fun game to be at. The fanbase, team, staff needed it. Still a season of "what-ifs" for ND. I am not too worried about the yardage stats for offense, we had great field position all night. If they had a more efficient offense, who knows where the season ends up. Go Irish!

Nice to see someone finally mentioning the mental toll playing four straight ranked opponents on a prime time setting will do to a college athlete. Plus, that was ND’s 8th straight game without a break. Al Golden had this defense prepared to run through a brick wall, and boy did they do that and then some. A great win to head into the bye week, the rest should help them recuperate and get healthy. Tough game looming in Death Valley against Clemson, but this team has the makings to finish the regular season with 10 wins.

To me, Riley and Brian Kelly fit into that very special tier of coach where they will consistently get you a good to great team, but they will always fall short and there will always be a clear difference between them and the ones that end the season with a natty. Mark Richt was the same way. Call it a lack of talent, deficiencies on one side of the ball, whatever. Yep. Bob created a cavalier acceptance of “let’s focus on winning the conference” among fans. After all, just getting to the playoff is amazing. Problem was, die-hard OU fans had already come to expect actually winning in playoff games; he had reinforced that expectation in his second year. Switzer coached OU for 16 years, and won three national titles; Bob coached longer, and managed just one. Bob’s post-season win record was 0.500. Mediocrity was the standard. Yes, we won conference titles, but OU once was a dominating power house. With Bob’s retirement, Lincoln took over and continued the “conference champion” target. Even Stoops, a defensive coach, failed to strengthen the defense; air raid competition (we will simply outscore everyone) became the formula, and defense was allowed to slip. Nepotism pushed Venables into leaving and the Stoops brain trust couldn’t field a decent defense. OU ultimately faced mutiny among its on-field defense, who clearly understood they knew more about running defense than the coaches. OU fans understood Venables’ return would bring defensive dominance to OU again. Switzer taught us that DEFENSE wins games; if the opposition cannot score, they cannot win. Looking forward to the return of the days of “hang half a hundred on ‘em, and go home with a win.”

They should take away votes from that female who last week still voted Texas ahead of OU, because as she put it, she still thinks Texas is a better team and OU didn't beat them convincingly by more than 3 points... OU beat them by 4. Also the voters whom made it to where OU moved up to 5 after beating 3rd ranked Texas, but when 8 ranked Washington narrowly beats 7th ranked Oregon, they leapfrog OU and become ranked 5th and move OU down to 6th. There's no logical consistency in that.

This game shows the defense is much improved but the offense needs a new wide receiver coach and offensive coordinator and a new special team coach. Notre Dame should bring in Paul Chryst or Kliff Kingsbury OC and Emmet Jones as WR coach. Levar woods as special teams coach would would mesh well with Freeman being an ex LB. Marcus Freeman needs an ex head coach for the offense and Defense so Freeman can focus on player development and building a national championship team. I believe Freeman has a better shot than Kelly but needs to adjust his staff in the offseason. If Golden leaves for a head coach job Freeman should look at Jim Leonhard Will Muschamp Mike Tressel For DC.

Riley's teams are extremely QB reliant. One bad game or one dud player at the QB position and Riley's teams fail. OU would have lost a lot more games had it not been for the "hero ball" played by Baker, Kyler, Hurts, and Williams. Riley relies on this style of play too much. And once that QB gets remotely slowed down, they lose. He gets away with it against inferior opponents, but he has always struggled against good competition because of it.

Josh, you actually made a mistake: the terminal issues were NOT in the defense (although the defense is bad). The terminal issues were in the OFFENSE. If you had watched the USC games carefully, you would have noticed that ever since the Arizona State game, opposing defenses had figured out how to stop Caleb Williams, and Caleb Williams was our entire offense. However, USC had more talented players than Arizona State, Colorado, and Arizona, so we managed to escape with wins in those three games. This ended with the Notre Dame game; Notre Dame's players are at least as talented as USC's, and perhaps more talented. This will also be the case with the players on the following teams on our schedule: Utah, Washington, Oregon, and UCLA. The problem is that our offense has been COMPLETELY stopped and we have not been able to create new offensive schemes. We managed to survive prior to the Notre Dame game on talent, but that advantage is now gone. Unless Lincoln Riley and Kliff Kingsbury can come up with completely new offensive schemes, we will be a 7-5 team by the end of the season. The die-hard USC fans have noticed this all season and we have been trying to beat this drum; however, it is not clear if the USC coaching staff has heard us or is just incapable of making mid-season corrections (which admittedly is quite difficult). It's going to be a long season. Where you are right is that USC is a hollow and fragile team.

Be careful beating your chest. Earlier this year you pointed out LR’s winning record and dared anyone to say he’s not a great coach. As an OU fan this jumped out at me and I was shocked. LR was a head coach for 5 years at OU and the winning record was your basis. But if you “scratched the surface” OU digressed further and further from competing for a National Title each year. By the 4th year OU didn’t make the CFPs and the 5th year didn’t even play in the Big 12 championship game. He then departs under the cover of night (literally). His 1st year at USC was a soft schedule and they did not face Oregon or Washington. The one strong program that he did face in the PAC12 was Utah and we all saw how that went. Your advice of looking beyond the record is correct, but a little late when you see your previous stance on Lincoln Riley. With all of this said, I do enjoy your show and will keep watching.

Regarding ND, they've obviously already been eliminated as one of the four teams in the FBS Playoff Series for this 2023-24 season, but next year and beyond with 12 teams in the series -- I'm guessing that it could maybe eventually even expand to 16 -- they could have two losses and still be considered as one of the at-large teams which would have to win four consecutive games to become champions. Being an indy [their being from Indiana, lol, as well as their being an indie, i.e., an independent] and not playing a set conference schedule will affect them negatively because they cannot be considered as one of the top four as conference champions from the Power 4 which would take the top-four seeds with first-week byes, (these) of whom would have to win three consecutively for the title. Would ND ever trade their wide and varied schedule which includes teams across the nation -- though they seem to be slowly adding more ACC teams, to play a buttoned-down schedule within the ACC or BIG? I don't think they would, besides, their deal with NBC being up after next season, could be pressuring them to keep playing a more national, interesting schedule. However, ND's lobbying for the ACC to include Cal and Stanford, could be indicators that they could be setting themselves up to join the ACC for fb, with their perception that Cal at least is a pushover. They'll keep USC on schedule regardless, and could have the ACC keep Stanford as a perpetual conference opponent, but what would happen to their game with Clemson?

@AAblade7 Жыл бұрын
Please do not give USC’s defense props. ND had 4 drives starting in the red zone that limited potential yards. In addition Sam Hartman was barely touched and they were struggling to contain a WR core that needed lacrosse players to fill out. Also I remember you talking about rating Lincoln Riley in the preseason. Does this look like a top 20 coach right now? Still I’ll take your straw man argument. 1. He’s had a lot of early success. Yeah with a team Bob stoops primarily recruited. The more he recruited and established his own culture the more OU fell off. 2. He recruits well. Is it him or the program? OU and USC seem to able to pull in top 10 classes without him based on recent history. More to the point in 2020 after making the playoffs 3 years in a row he couldn’t even pull off a top 10 class at OU. 3. He’s produced 3 heisman winning QBs. How much was that benefit of the system? Imagine if Josh Allen in 2017 had mark Andrew’s to throw to (Lincoln screwed Mark with his offense schemes and cost him spots in the draft). 2018 Kyler Murray benefited from a weak QB class and the Heisman’s panel fear of voting for a defensive lineman like Nick Bosa. Last season Caleb Williams had a far easier schedule and the LA hype machine. The more I watch Caleb the more I realize he has judgment flaws like Baker and Kyler. If he does actually become an all-pro guy then he’s going to have to grow. Michael Penix Jr. is much more polished and ready for the league 4. He’s only 40. Seems like a theme for USC. Lane Kiffin was just as young. Steve Sarkisian was what 42? Lane hasn’t figured it out and the jury is still out in Steve. Also they are close to 50 now. 5. Does he develop well? Considering most of his pro-bowl draft picks played a lot under Bob stoops, not really. Right now I’d rate him a little over Lane Kiffin due to acalades. Of course Lane didn’t get gift wrapped a program like Riley did OU so who knows.

That loss is on Lincoln Riely. You can call it Offensive line issue or Running game issue or QB issue; but Lincoln Riely is to blame. The situation was same @ Oklahoma. When Lincoln Offence was in trouble (recall OU vs Kansas?) Caleb bailed him out. Check USC games this year vs Arizona, Colorado .... same narrative. Offence got stuck and Caleb bailed him out. Without Caleb, his offense is as disaster as his defense. Same thing happened in Oklahoma. He got big time QBs in Oklahoma (Baker, Kyler, Jalen, and Caleb) to bailed him out. He also had Spencer Rattler and unfortunately didn't do much for him as Spencer was not like Caleb. And @ South Bend Caleb got out of Gas. By the way Lincoln Riely never cares about Special Team either. Lincoln is a great Offensive Coordinator - probably one of the best in the nation but as a Head Coach he is a complete disaster. His flashy offence covers his Head Coaching issue to some extent but at some point, it gets out of hand. He doesn't know winning games ugly. He doesn't know grinding. Flashy offense doesn't keep up all the time specially Infront of gritty defense. USC vs ND score would be uglier if ND had a moderate offence.

Um, OU fans knew this. We understand that just like the Big 12 that basically lives and dies by the West Coast offense, you're likely to get your aspirins kicked by anybody who can play some defense. And they are so poorly coached. I mean USC kick return players grabbed Arizona's return guy and tried to drag him several feet to the ball. I do believe there is some proof in records. It just depends on who teams lose to. USC lost three games last year. That means something. They have played so poorly this year that even though they were undefeated they kept going down in the polls every week. If USC played someone from the SEC or the Big 10, they would get blown out! I remember when we got a defensive coordinator from the PAC. I couldn't believe it! Why would you get a defensive coordinator from the PAC? People have said it and said it. Defense wins championships.

Lincoln Riley’s complete lack of effort on adapting or learning special teams or defense has left him incapable of leading a team to a conference title. He’s not recruiting at the same level anymore, and the bad stigma he has defensively has attached itself to him not just his d-coordinator. Once Caleb leaves and they join the Big 10 he’ll have 2-3 seasons and USC will be done with him. Unless he hires an amazing defensive coordinator

Lincoln Riley just doesn’t seem to care about cultivating a complete team. Yes, it is an offensive game nowadays but his defenses are consistently so bad that it doesn’t allow him to compete with even just good teams like Notre Dame. His best bet is to just hire a quality defensive staff and let them control it completely because I don’t believe he knows how to coach a defense. As for Notre Dame, while this was a good win for them, they haven’t shown that they can consistently win games. It’s nice to beat top 10 teams but if you’re still losing to Louisville and Marshall then you’ll never win anything.

You are what your record says you are. Winning and losing is a binary concept. There is no "We won but.." or "We lost but.." in record books. We know this to be true because nobody goes around saying the 1957 ND team, which beat Oklahoma 7 - 0 and ended what is possibly the greatest win streak of any sport of all time at 47 games, was a good team. They were 7 - 3. Oklahoma gave them the game. USC was 5 - 0. They're now 5 - 1. They are what their record says they are, or in this case, are not. They're not undefeated but they have won some games. Context defeats math every time in sports.

Now imagine Riley without a heisman [caliber] QB. I think Caleb has bailed Riley out nearly 10 times. Twice at OU (Texas, Kansas), at least 4 times in 2022 (Oregon St, Arizona, Cal, UCLA), and already twice in 2023 against CO and Arizona. I used to consider Caleb a generational QB when it came to the college game, but it's games like this that make you question if that was ever a fair description. He's still elite and still owns a heisman, and maybe, just maybe, games like this will make him take his development more seriously.
@RedBullND
@RedBullND Жыл бұрын
Hard to imagine Riley without a heisman trophy qb because that is what he’s known for. If it wasn’t Caleb it would have been someone else. Riley develops qb’s into superstars and based on Baker, Kyler, Jalen, and Caleb it should be expected that he’ll have someone else step up and be in the chase for a heisman. Caleb didn’t make Riley. He is a product of his system and was talent that he spotted and developed into the best QB in the draft class. Caleb still is generational. You can’t base all your beliefs about a coach and a QB on one game. You can’t win them all and they are human and allowed to have a bad day.

@@RedBullND Riley is 1 for 2 from a success standpoint on QBs he has recruited AND developed from start to finish (Rattler being the other one). Not a large sample size. Considering Riley has worked with the following QB rankings (as recruits), I'm not sure if the results are so surprising to suggest Riley is truly developing these guys or simply plugging them into schemes while surrounded by talent: Caleb Williams: 5 star, #1 QB and overall player (On3), as well as #1 rivals QB, #2 QB according to ESPN and 247 Spencer Rattler: 5 star, consensus #1 QB in all recruiting services Kyler Murray: 5 star, #1 QB (ESPN), #2 QB (247), #3 QB (ON3) Jalen Hurts: 4 star, #1 QB according to 247 and otherwise top 10 QB. He had 3 prolific seasons with Bama before the 1 with OU. His last season with OU was his best from an overall statistical standpoint, but just for fun, I'll point out that he had more completions his first season as a freshman at Bama and a better QB rating his junior season at Bama than he did his senior season at OU. My point: He was ready to be plugged into any system, anywhere, and would have produced. Baker is the outlier who we all know started as a walk-on at OU. Riley has not started another 3-star or walk-on since. Also, I didn't say it was one game that changed my mind on Caleb. I said "it's games like this." This is certainly his worst game, no doubt. Funny enough, Caleb's biggest win is still as a Sooner when they came back to beat Texas, and I don't see him having such a meaningful game this year. Caleb has a few bad habits as a QB that will come back to haunt him in the NFL, and my biggest concern for him is how he handles adversity. These bad habits are overcome by his natural abilities and surrounding talent that won't work in the NFL. And his body language and leadership go to the toilet when USC is struggling as a team. He is still young, so let's hope Riley finishes strong on his development, but that's where Riley's track record is deficient: instilling players with character and resiliency.

What USC has for a head coach is something other than. He is toxic for the game. He doesn’t build up he breaks down. That is all his resume should be allowed to state. The rest is a misrepresentation of facts. I’m just waiting to see if he receives a offer elsewhere and runs off or if he Jimbo Fishers the University for the rest of his contract.
