Not sure what the plural of Primus is, but Primi sounds good to me :) Thanks, LPL, but I think this lock took every obstacle those threw up and added a few on top. It probably sounds strange and reveals what a super lock geek I am, but this video really did make my day!

Picking is a definite skill... You can only learn what you are taught. And you can teach only what you know... The magical moment in between, bundled with all that practice that is the TALENT! And that sir is exactly what you have. Talent cannot be taught and it cannot be learned either. You just have to have it.

Genuinely astonishing work! Congratulations! I was a little surprised though, given the great lengths they've gone to, that the didn't put serrations on the outer pins
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks... as for the lack of serrations, many seem to think that standard pins are harder in MTL's than spooled or serrated pins. I tend to agree, but the really heavy tension that I favor negates much of the difficulty.

LOL, you read me like a book. That was my first MT5+ and, for some reason, that half of the euro cylinder was pretty easy to pick... probably because that was the lock on which I developed my picking method for them. Strangely enough, the other half is awesome for practice. It never picks the same way twice, and I have it sitting in the Rotalok that Rick sent me a couple months ago. THAT will be an epic pick (if I can do it) -- opening an MT5+ in my hand that's mounted in a housing that rotates on ball bearings!

You are right both the MT5+ and the IKON are identical. Strange that the sliders are not spring loaded. I would have expected they are.
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 8 жыл бұрын
Why would you have expected them to be spring loaded? They are positively controlled in both directions by the track in the key, so it is not needed. I think that the spring loaded sliders are a TINY bit easier because they make it easier to detect when the slider is in the true gate.
@MultiVde

The UL Rating used to refer to pick and drill resistance. UL would allow 10 minutes for drilling with standard tools, something a thief would carry. Same for picking, UL would allow 10 minutes with standard tools. I would consider the picks your using as standard tools. So, when you have a UL listed lock picked in about 6 minutes.... Goes to show the skill picking a dimple lock, with a sidebar - in about 6 minutes. That takes some skill.
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 8 жыл бұрын
Yes, picks do qualify as the tools contemplated by UL437, and the rating is a joke. All full-sized MTL's with the extra drill protection are UL rated, and you've seen how fast I can pick though the classics and interactives. Same for the TuBAR locks, Duo, etc. Same for the ASTM pick rating.

I was noticing how closely the width of the true gates match the shelf in the sidebar. I can imagine the perceptible "jiggle" in a set slider must be very subtle! Also, how are your hands not shaking after you opened this lock?
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 8 жыл бұрын
This is going to sound strange, but its not so much that I feel movement in the slider, but more that I don't feel binding. I know that doesn't make that much sense, but it's true. The movement is subtle -- the binding is not.

My locksmith recommended the Interactive plus, bc the MT5+ allegedly has a problem with sticking or binding occasionally. I haven’t heard anyone else complain about this. Have you heard of or experienced this problem?
@MultiVde
@MultiVde 8 жыл бұрын
Got a question for you. I got yesterday a MT5 lock and to be quite honest I think they are easyer to open than the normal MTL with no interactive elements, do you have the same impression?
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 8 жыл бұрын
Tough to answer. First, put aside the interactive nonsense. That's for key control only. Actually makes picking easier because you know where the one interactive pin will set. Second, the type of pin matters. MT5 outer pins are all standard. SOme people think they are harder. I don't. I think they are using too little tension, whereas I use absurd amounts of tension. In addition, it's possible that some people don't realize that many MT5 cores are countermilled, which can be confusing if you are not expecting it. Personally, I think the hardest outer pin is the serrated drivers that can be found in Classics and Interactives... particularly when there paired with the spooled outer key pins. Third, the really hard part of MT5 pins is the way the inner driver and outer key pins lock together. Some post 2008 interactive locks have a similar system... and they are just as hard. That said, overall, I think the MT5 pins are the hardest because they are smaller (requiring more precision in picking inner and outer pins separately), and the way the pins lock together.
@MultiVde
@MultiVde 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the thorugh answer. Then I need to find some more MT5s to compare, because the one I got the other day poped 10 min after I started playing with it. and for the next few hours I could open it in a few minutes. I will try to make a video soon.
@lockpickinglawyer
@lockpickinglawyer 8 жыл бұрын
Those are not unreasonably short pick times for someone experienced with MTL's (I assume you are not talking about the MT5+ with the sliders). It is definitely faster than my average, but it doesn't strike me as outrageous. Have you taken it apart yet to see if it is master keyed? You may find the video that I'm going to post shortly interesting... a master keyed MT5+. Oddly, the first MT5 I had was usually hard, and gave me a great deal of trouble... thus, I went for a while thinking these pins were harder than they are. While the interlocking feature is tricky, it is definitely pickable once you get used to it.
@MultiVde
@MultiVde 8 жыл бұрын
Hmm it is written only MT5 on the key, does not look like it has sliders. No I haven't gutted it yet, not at home at the moment (i'm in Mexico fo two weeks because of work) Will send you a picture in a bit.

It'd be nice to afford to put twenty of these in a door. There's no way the best lock picker on Earth would have time to pick them all.

Perhaps, but they'd have enough time to smash/cut one of your windows or kick in your door (unless door jamb reinforced). ;)

So basically what you're saying is that these are virtually impossible to open considering how much effort it was required from someone as skilled as you.

Btw. It is probably a bit politically incorrect to say "and we opened her up" =)

Perhaps so, but this lock is definitely a "her" ... beautiful, forbidding, mysterious, fascinatingly complex, strong yet delicate, providing only the most subtle of feedback, requiring time and dedication from all suitors, and lowering her defenses only to those who persevere and are found worthy!

Very poetic, I gotta say, but be it is very risky business, where she is the judge and jury of when something doesn't fly =) You can file for an appeal, but it doesn't change anything once the first verdict is done =)

This is the best answer I can possibly imagine to that comment. Well done sir! FWIW, I just read this to my wife, who replied only: "that's awesome!".

tumbl3r Thanks. I just looked at the video I have planned for tomorrow -- I said the same thing upon opening (with reference to a very similar lock... hint, hint). I wonder how many of my other videos feature that phrase.

Actually you can open the Bowley Lock with the bypass tool in the picture link below. However the new Grade 2 Bowely Lock has a cylinder shield that has very close tolerance that the diameter of the shield is 1/32" smaller than the actual diameter of the lock hole so this bypass tool won't work on the new Bowley Lock. Plus the new Bowley Lock have a tolerance of less than 1/8" all around the throw bolt. And the Mul-T-Lock MT5+ above with the deadbolt version can be open with a similar bypass tool that can reach in and push the throw bolt open, as the cylinder shield of Mul-T-Lock MT5+ deadbolt version does not have a very close tolerance with the diameter of the cylinder shield 1/4"-3/8" smaller than the diameter of the lock hole. And there is a big gap all around the throw bolt that the cylinder shield leave open that does not exist in the new Bowley Lock grade 2. login.filesanywhere.com/FS/M.aspx?v=8c7268865995a37bb29c

I hate you! Lol I have drug dealers living above me, that won't leave me alone & just when I think I've bought the only lock that was advertised as not being able to be picked. And then I find this video, Free for anyone to watch! All after paying $208. For a new mortise with 2 keys. To replace my old mul-t-lock mortise. They've managed to completely disable my wifi security cameras & I know they've been picking my locks. I always find bend Bobby pins & opened paper clips by my door when I get home among other like items, dollarstore electric toothbrushes with the brush missing etc .
