You can attach directly to a USB wireless adapter using an N to RP-SMA adapter and save the cable loss in many instances.

Question: can you just connect this to a wireless router? Intent is to broadcast 2.4GHz WIFI signal about 350 meters. Seems like the signal would need amplification, but...?
@kd6tas
@kd6tas Жыл бұрын
@@darrenblanchard6232 Cable loss is very high at microwave frequencies--so much so that every foot matters. Ideally you don't want to use any cable at all. This is a unique application where you can eliminate the cable loss. Take advantage of it.

@@kd6tas Ok, so antenna to USB adapter ...and the USB is going where? USB would need to be plugged into a PC correct? Think I'm missing something here...
@kd6tas
@kd6tas Жыл бұрын
@@darrenblanchard6232 Yes, that is correct. The USB cable plugs directly into a computer. To broadcast 350 meters you need something like an omni-directional wifi base station that uses power over Ethernet and a mast mounted antenna to minimize radio frequency cable loss. If it doesn't have to be omni-directional, there are more compact devices. Keep in mind that originally wifi was only meant to replace one run of Ethernet cable (100 meters) reliably. More than that called for multiple nodes and/or directionality and altitude. These days there are a lot more competing stations and devices then there used to be. Wifi over distance isn't really practical anymore unless it's over basically empty land with a clear channel.
@darrenblanchard6232
@darrenblanchard6232 Жыл бұрын
@@kd6tas I'm at a loss here; I don't see how a wireless USB adapter helps the situation. Wouldn't there be a cable loss from the USB adapter to the antenna? I realize there might be more extravagant setups, but I have a 24dBi Parabolic Grid 2.4GHz antenna. Suggestions?

If i attached this antenna on my roof and pointed it to an area of my propertyy about 100 metres away, as long my device has the capacity of connecting to wifi I dont need anything else? Also if I used the antenna in the field and had my router in the house sensibly placed would i need anything apart from the usb receiver? Any help would be great, thanks

It's so simple you have to connect the antenna port of the WiFi usb adapter to the parabolic antenna cable but I you need an a/c or a n300 usb adapter because you can't get the full amount of transfer between your adapter and the parabolic antenna if you use a bg wifi adapter

What products do you recommend to strongly increase the number of networks detected, as well as the potency of the link. I mean i basically want something that can equal being just next to a router that is 1km away. So i was thinking amplifier ? Repeater obviously is of no use here. Btw i already use an alfa awus 1900. If you can't get enough elevation, is it okay to tilt the antenna in an angle upwards?
@sMASHsound

that woudl depend, i assume. its directional, meaning that it needs to be pointed directly at the transmission tower to collect the signal. i would assume that if there is sumting in the way, like a ridge, or ur in a valley, that the signal would not be passing through the large mass. so it would be coming over and down. so in that case, angling it upwards may make sense, as that is the path or direction the signal is coming from. the downside is, for this antenna to transmit, it would be aiming upwards, and may not have the same power to let it spread to reach the transmission tower. if u have it already, it would be worth a try to try the aiming left+right+up+down.

You are correct. How bent was it? I would try to put it at 45 degrees. That should be fine. Usually the bigger problem with the grid is aiming. It is very narrow... you need to be right on it with the signal.

@garychap8384
@garychap8384 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, and that's a FAR better idea. Signals 'leak' out of cables ... the longer the cable (and the higher the frequencies involved) the less useable signal you get out of the other end. Since WiFi is waaay up in the Gigahertz frequencies, it really doesn't like staying inside the cable. So, to ensure peak radiated power (and received signal strength) get the Transmitter/Receiver hardware as close as possible to the antenna! Perhaps in your roof space or on the same mast as the antenna _(use special outdoor airtight sealed enclosures/grommets and a number of silica bags to neutralise any moisture you'll inevitably trap inside)_ By making sure that the RF signal doesn't have too far to travel between the transceiver and the antenna you'll get top performance. Then your Ethernet link can be real long.... even 300m before any degradation in quality. And remember ... you can also use PoE (Power over Ethernet) to power the transceiver remotely - so there's only one outdoor Ethernet cable going to the antenna location ... carrying both data and power. I say use outdoor Ethernet because it's properly armoured ... regular Ethernet will turn brittle and snap due to UV. You should also make sure it doesn't move in the wind... it will need more cable clips than TV coax because the solid-core conductors used in Ethernet don't like movement. If using remote power... Just remember that DC power degrades over distance too, so you might need to put a little more in at one end. A multimeter will help you determine your losses. If your equipment is designed to be powered this way it will accept anything up to 48v - and this type of equipment will deal with line loss very well indeed. If you're trying to send 9v up a very long wire to a non-PoE device, you may need to put in 10v or even 11v just to get 9v at the other side. The multimeter is your friend : ) So, wherever possible, use something that accepts 48v PoE ... and send 48v up the wire. Whatever arrives 46v, 44v, even 20v - will be converted by the remote unit into a good stable supply voltage. DC loss is due to the wire having some resistance. I know your question was months ago - but I hope that my answer helps anyone else wondering the same thing. If you can't be bothered messing about with PoE, just remember ... you need to keep your antenna cable as short as possible whilst getting the antenna up as high as possible - so plan everything around that, and make any compromises accordingly.

So you said the most common question is, "what's the range?", and then you never answered with a single empirical number of "what's the range." So, what's the range? Obviously it depends on Tx/Rx power, interference, elevation, blah blah blah, but: give some numbers: what's the range? Ex: Bill got 1 mile, Jan got 300 yards, Michael Jordan got 3 miles with a 2W Tx and yaggi in parallel with the parabolic....give some real numbers please. Something is better than nothing.
@SimpleWiFi
@SimpleWiFi 4 жыл бұрын
I used to do that - but unfortunately many people would misinterpret what I was saying and assume they could reach 8 miles away with a small antenna. Then they come screaming at me because they think I lied....
@ElectricRCAircraftGuy
@ElectricRCAircraftGuy 4 жыл бұрын
@@SimpleWiFi with an overabundance of information, you could just point them to a page and say, "look at the variability: you need two identical setups with $300 antennas to get 2 to 8 mile range and they must be exactly aimed or they don't work at all. The price of professional setup is $500 and the antennas are $600 total ($300 x 2) or else more typical numbers are 100 to 300 yards. You knew that going into this because I sent you this page" (containing a ton of examples and information). So, your 100 yard range with a < 1W wireless AP and 3 inch panel antennas is fantastic, and expected, as shown in Figure 3.

Good video. The only thing I wanted to point out is that the usage of the word "Gigahert", there's no such thing. It's "Gigahertz". Hertz is not a plural word - e.g. if you have 1 Gigahertz, it's not "1 Gigahert".

@@SimpleWiFi Verizon 4glte band with feed horn dialed in? I guess I could test it out. I don't see how it could hurt. Just boosting the parabolic reflection. Might help reduce noise to my MiFi since this will be a vehicle setup with the antenna at the rear of the pickup and at least 13 feet high. I will focus on positioning my truck facing away from the signal tower because the MiFi will be in the cab.

You seem to have the answers, so I'll ask you: I have a 24dBi parabolic gird and wish to broadcast a 2.4GHz WIFI signal to a location about 350m (~1,200ft or 0.25mi). It's in a rural area with a slight change in elevation, and there are some trees in the line of sight. Antenna would fix at the highest point of my house, on the side of roof. What do you recommend?
