In antenna design, it's called a surface wave antenna. Each of the small disks is equivalent to an infinite number of wires, ends up being a disk. The small disks are called directors. The antenna is essentially a yagi. The very last disk, the large one, is a reflector, the one the inner conductor goes to is called a driven element. If you want to make it weather proof, put it inside some pvc plastic water pipe. I've found that some of the measurements have to be empirically determined.
@billmcnew54782 жыл бұрын
How did he know the exact distance to space the disks?

Could you scale it up more to increase range
@royalag0072 жыл бұрын
@@thenthson but this will effect the wave width which could be is his case around 15-20 degree not an exact number but closer to realite so all that you do when you scale it up is just to more focus the wave width which is not really recommend (if it just for experimental reason it will work just fine and pick a further access point or wifi hotspot but for dailyuse you will face a several disconnection instances because of the poor wave width especially if you put the antenna outside ) the main reason why this actually work is this key word "focus the power into smaller area " in more simpler word ; let's suppose the antenna in it original state require 5w to power the receiver but because the wave width is so much wider (around 60-70 degree of wave width ) the wave range will be shorter around 50 m (if there is no obstacle = in the air) but thanks to the narrow wave width of the wifi gun this 5w will be focused so the range will increase so much it could literally 10 times (around 500-700m) by the way the 5w power requirement could not be an actual real number but from what i read it's reality close to reality i guess)

We all know the calculus concept of spinning a semicircle to form a sphere. Is this antenna effectively a Yagi that has been spun around its longitudinal axis, so that each rod in the Yagi becomes a disc? - a sort of Yagi for all polarisations? If you transmit from this antenna, what polarisation does the wave have? Does the antenna out-perform a Yagi that is communicating with another, similarly orientated Yagi - in other words, both are horizontal, or both vertical?

You will get much better results if you use a proper coax line. It is also why it was difficult to find the connector. Be Careful you don't exceed the maximum Effective Radiated Power (ERP) Radio Frequency Burns are bad for your health.

It's unidirectional, though, so as long as he doesn't spend his time staring at the antenna while sitting in the beam, I guess it's fine...
@unsettledroell6 жыл бұрын
Titou1384 no it’s directional. Btw, if you transmit with this antenna also, you will exceed max EIRP, because WiFi already transmits at max EIRP when using low gain antennas.
@titou13846 жыл бұрын
Yeah, sorry, that's what I meant, in French "unidirectionnel" means it emits in one direction... Which I thought to translate into "unidirectional" in English, but what I meant was indeed directional.
@glytchd6 жыл бұрын
Titou1384 - uniDirectional is Correct guys. :/ OMNI-Directional = ALL Directions (Typical antenna) UNI-Directional = ONE Direction (ex. YAGi) BI-Directional = information Transmission in both directions OR an ANT that broadcasts/receives in 2 opposing directions simultaneously. Might be useful in a static-relay system, but in this case -DOES NOT APPLY- All Network traffic is going to be bi-directional. I presume ppl misapply bidirectional because they are thinking of the data transmission. Yet we are describing PHYSICAL PROPERTIES of the ANT. OMNI directional is the word Unsettled and others seem to be unaware of, even thought it was in common use just 10 years ago. Maybe because it reminds them of Religion?? *SHRUG* Omni-potent = all powerful
@mouse4546 жыл бұрын
Don't think there can be serious safety issues here since someone putting their Omni wireless modem in metal shelving will unintentionally set up a directional reflector with >15dB gain. Probably better gain than video.

If you replace the center screw with something non conductive, and the d4iven element with a properly tuned loop, your antenna will perform much better. Alternatively, electrically isolate the driven element (one in from the back) from the rest of the design, and connect the shield to the reflector (far back element).

Somehow ping is 2ms. You get such ping only via cable. I highly douobt that this thing is working and author actually uses cable connection for show. Wi-fi has considerable latency (~15ms or more, depending on obstacles, distance and 2.4ghz/5ghz network congestion).

@@rocobalt9223 Being in a same room, using antenna on router and sitting almost next to it? Possible. But not over such long distance with a lot of obstacles as shown in video. Signal must make round trip, and that takes time.

Shouldn't antenna elements be electrically isolated from one another but yours are connect over the metal bolt?
@1videoshow6 жыл бұрын
Yes strange
@LukasFink16 жыл бұрын
It doesn't matter, because when they resonate, in the middle there will be a voltage node. It's like when you put a finger softly exactly on the middle of a guitar string (not pressing it down, only soft): You will still be able to hear a sound (not the best example, because here it will be one octave higher).
@DCFusor6 жыл бұрын
Lukas is correct (I'm an engineer). Here, the guy used round elements so it's not horizontal or vertically polarized. Further reading : www.antenna-theory.com/antennas/travelling/yagi.php Add "plumber's special" to a yagi search, that part isn't a new idea.

Zara Hall yes, it is possible. With signal in giga Herz, flow of electricity is different. Wave length is very small. Did You See how build is phone antenna? And why ground is connected to this same copper wired with signal pin? I use for my antenna in computer from old phone. And is working. Maybe signal is this same, but important is that is not worse, then original cheap antenna.

0:31 no way that copper sheet is 3mm thick
@amber41046 жыл бұрын
Why?
@jakobrupar14966 жыл бұрын
Ali Amber because 3mm isn't that easy to cut... You can also see at 0:24 where he is using a ruler, that the plates are not even close to 3mm... I'm pretty sure it's less than 1mm, so he probably meant 0.3mm

Nothing is illegal if you dont do anything stupid. building a huge antenna may be theoretically illegal, but if you dont use it on somebody else, then should be fine.
@AddisonGuynn6 жыл бұрын
The physics would not work. The behavior of the antenna is based on the size and spacing of the disks. Along with that, radio waves at 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz travel by line of sight, they won't make it past the horizon.
