On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle we wake up to chaos. A 125' Westport megayacht worth $24M has a technical problem and wreaks havoc just a few yards from our custom 435 catamaran SV basik. We regroup and get you caught up with our travels. Come back next week to see us leave Port Angeles in route for Neah Bay...see you then!

Wow! What a way to wake up! Hopefully no one was injured in that awful “run away yacht” incident. Nice of you to help. It is a good example of the anything can happen in life. Looks like your fuel gauge project went in without any issues and you will now be able to more closely gauge your fuel. Of course only when you are not healed over! Love your girls and their upbeat attitudes.

We saw something similar few years ago. A powerboat coming slowly out of a dock suddenly surged forward while turning to stbd. Smashed into the boats opposite. The cause was a problem in the drive-by-wire system often found in modern powerboats. When the skipper engaged slow astern on the stbd. engine (to help the vessel turn to stbd.), that engine actually went slow ahead. The skipper found he wasn’t turning to stbd., so he increased astern power to the stbd. engine - but this made the stbd. engine go faster ahead! Once more he tried - with full power stbd. astern - but it went full power stbd. ahead. With a roar of the engine, then a crash of splintering fibreglass, it was over - and he killed both engines. All this in 3 seconds.

Westport should have named that boat "the champ". 8-0 against smaller boats. In all honesty, I'm glad everyone made it out ok. I was working in the marina that day and saw it on the docks and their salvage work. They had another wreck a week earlier in the main port haul out.

One of the things I always hold dear to me as I grew up skippering boats "slow is good, slow is better", and "when all else failed shutdown the engines". Man what a mess, but by the looks of the boat he has the money and or insurance to take care of that, hope no one was hurt.

From the limited security footage, it appears there was plenty of time to fix a human error so probably not that. I would bet it was electronic throttles, possibly even wireless electronic throttles and sensor malfunction. Crew couldnt grasp the error fast enough to attempt a recovery. Turn engines off, drop anchor the moment you loose throttle response.

You have to be so careful when operating boats with remote apps on.. I saw a 110 Ferretti lose control in Key West. The captain was docking her into a slip in a canal. He was standing on the dock and using his cell phone app and his cell phone battery died. The Ferretti just kept going down the canal and into the ocean. The app does not have an auto engine shut off if the cell wifi connection was lost..!!! I jumped on someone's jet ski and got aboard her. Shut the engines down... turned her around and brought her back into the canal.

In my experience the Captain makes a inadvertent grab or push on the throttles and this happens. I have been on a Sub and a Tender that this has happened to. The Engineering department on the Sub (of which I was one of the people on watch) happened have to realized the issue and we managed to stop the Sub from hitting anything and therefore saved the Officer of the Deck from having any major problems during the investigation.

We had a similar incident on my ship a, Destroyer Escort. I was in the Fireroom Control Room when all of a sudden they started ringing up ahead full then emergency back full. I wasn't on watch so I ran up topside thru the force draft blower room, which they were howling like crazy. Got to the motor whaleboat deck just in time to see our fantail slam in to the DLG we were tied up to sliding down the side ripping parts off. Hit and run, lol, our Captain got out of there fast. A few months later we had a new Captain.

back in the late 80s or early 90s.. down in los angeles harbor B channel at Newmarks landing.. a 1920's over 50' power boat was coming in with just the owner on board.. it had manual shift transmissions.. that could only be done in the engine room with the engine off.. so he is motoring into his slip.. shuts down the engine and leaves the helm to shift into reverse.. something the owner has done hundreds of times.. except the engine did not shut down.. he plowed right thru the dock.. pulling the over 50' boats on either side of him in by their stern lines as he went thru.. but.. the other side of the dock he plowed thru with his bow.. was a 2 story house boat on a small barge.. a few hours later.. the harbor patrol, and the fire department are standing on the roof of that house boat as the pull the power boat out... oops.. he pierced the hull of the house boat... the house boat flooded instantly and capsized with the various fire and police on roof.. sending them all for a swim.. that happened only 3 slips from my friends 104' wooden power boat. huh.. this popped in in my search.. Watched this on the local news here in Seattle Wednesday. They said there was a crew of 6 "Westport Yacht" employees on that boat including the Captain, but no explanation of what the cause of accident could have been? Damage is likely to exceed $100,000, with the bulk I'm guessing being the research vessel Kuapio Kohola which was extensively damaged according to the Clallam County Sherriff's Office. I pray the sailing God's stay on your side guys.

We were pretty lucky not to be in the line of fire since that was the guest dock. I think the damage will well exceed the 100k. There will be much more to it than we can see. Insurance Investigators, the coast guard, EPA, city officials were all there and I am sure everyone will have reports and studies for this incident.

@Onboard Lifestyle - so glad you were ok - scary. But an interesting incident: as you observed, cleats pulled out and lines parted, it shows you how much power there must have been to part those lines. Secondly, the joys of electronics or fancy systems on modern yachts - ie perhaps a software or system/electronics failure? Thirdly, you're normally advised to cut your engines when refuelling, even with diesel craft, but perhaps this fault occurred before that happened. Fair winds, and good health. Cheers.
