I agree with you that shot placement is very important, but I think over-confidence in skill also gets even experienced shooters in trouble when it comes to self-defense situations. It's one thing to be able to put 100% of your shots on paper exactly where you want them, but it's another thing entirely in the chaos of a fight, even if you are good under pressure. I trust my abilities to be accurate too, but I won't carry anything smaller than a .32, so that even if I only manage get some of my shots where I want them, it will still be good enough to incapacitate an attacker.

See, the thing about protective carry weapons these days, is that most carriers are paranoid and assume every assailant that you may have to potentially shoot is some heavily armored Die Hard bad guy. You could have one of the most shitty 22 pistols and one shot would most likely stop someone trying to harm or mug you. A 25 ACP is plenty enough to stop a home intruder or mugger.

I'm not saying .25 acp isn't deadly or anything. But if I have someone shooting at me I would prefer a bit more stopping power and penetration potential at 10 yards or so. I know I am late to this. But I think your off base here. I don't think it has anything to do with die hard the movie. But crazy people drunk and doped people can be hard to stop. And its not about lethality its about stopping the attack. Popping someone 3 or 7 times and them dieing 20 seconds after the put a knife in you or a loved one bad. All handguns really are not that great at stopping some one. So if you have the choice on what to carry. Why would you pick a small hard to hit with with the least ft lbs of energy? I don't want to here about shot placement. Leo hit ratio averages under 40% Thats with a duty gun. That should be way easier to hit with than a pocket gun.

It needs to be understood that FBI minimum requirements for adequate bullet penetration include penetration of light obstacles, such as doors, car windshields, car door, before bullet hits the body. So, in such situation the bullet should have ample power to overcome those light obstacles and still have enough power to do significant damage to a human body. Self-defense scenarios normally don’t include those light obstacles to overcome, and that means that .25acp cartridge has ample enough energy and penetration to stop the assailant on its tracks. For example, a human heart is located about 4 inches deep, behind front breast plate of the human body, and 10-11 inches of penetration is adequate penetration to reach and pierce vital organs.
@upinarms79 Жыл бұрын
You are right about FBI testing but bone is also a lot harder to get through than you might think. Ballistics gel is a good analogue for fat, skin, and normal muscle mass, but the entire human body is a little tougher. You might be lucky and any confrontation you're ever involved in might just be an attacker in an clear, open space that's only wearing light clothing with no obstructions, but since that's obviously not guaranteed to always be the case, why not just carry something that will still do the job in those situations as well?

I teach defensive shooting and as with any round, shot placement is very important. If the round was useless, it wouldn't be in production and have those who carry a weapon chambered in it. Yes, it's weak by today's standards. But it has been used for self defense with good results. There are even a few new developments in regards to the pills available for them including bullets that open up at lower velocities. At any rate, it's better than a stick.

the FBI standard was first at 10" . they only changed it to 12" because they wanted rounds to defeat barriers including car doors . we don't need that, so 10" is good for us. we must SEE our targets and they can't be hiding behind barriers because we don't know what else is.
@MoabYoda2 жыл бұрын
I was messing with some .25 ammo today and looking at my S&W bodygaurd. If you made a double stack mag you could fit 17 rounds of .25 acp into a gun the same size as the Bodygaurd. 7 rounds of .380 or 18 rounds of .25 ????? I think one of our gun manufacturers should consider making a micro .25 with modern polymer and a high capacity double stack. You could make an ultra tiny gun that weighs next to nothing with a really high capacity.

Would not 10-12“ do a lot of damage to organs and blood vessels though? I agree you need to hit the target 2-3 times and the hole is small so the bleed rate will be not so fast but even so, the target person wont be feeling so great for sure. Tests by Paul Harrel show fmj 25 acp bullets will damage bone and others have shown they will penetrate skull. Agreed, hollow points don’t make sense and its best to go for all the penetration you can get with this modest calliber.

As we see from self defense, shooting most people pound the lead into the air and stressful self-defense situation. FBI test isn't the human body with just a few inches of flesh before vital organs. And then there's the neck and skull. The .25 is certainly adequate. Just showing a gun is usually adequate.
@professorpewpuew6 жыл бұрын
That's a reason why they want 12 inches minimum. I think its a relatively arbitrary baseline to take into account factors we can't accurately gauge, like size of the body, angle of shot, and the presence of bone. This test is simply a baseline of comparison against other rounds and is repeatable. Shooting a real person has so many variables that its hard to accurately predict anything, so it isn't repeatable and testable.

There's nothing wrong with a decent .25 acp pistol but nowadays there are better options for a compact handgun with a much more powerful round. If you're stuck with a .25 acp however, a well placed shot will still take out your attacker and most give up the will to fight if they survive the first shot. Many people have bitten the dust underestimating the small .25. Having said that, there are situations where adrenaline will keep an attacker going especially with bad shot placement and a more powerful handgun will always be best. TLDR: carry the biggest gun you comfortably can. If that has to be a .25 it's a lot better than nothing.

You can get 8 rounds in my f.i.e., and it is smaller than most 380s. All pocket autos rely on bullet placement more than expansion. The fbi protocol is based on the miami dade shootout. Which is supposed to simulate the penetration into shirt, thru arm flesh, out of shirt, back into shirt, into chest cavity. From front on most handguns will punch thru the breastplate ir ribs and make it at least into the heart, lung area, or liver and with a hope of hitting the spinal cord or arteries that runs along the inside of the spine.

He was a real POS, known to do such things prior, allegedly) LMFAO Several morals to the story: 1. Keep your Pecker in your pants when it ain't appropriate to be dipping it wrongly; 2. Don't be messing around with a married woman not your own; 3. If you are bound and determined you MUST mess around with a married woman, make DAMNED SURE her Hubby doesn't arrive home unannounced and with a gun of ANY caliber, and, lastly; 4. DON'T MESS AROUND WITH A MARRIED WOMAN WHO YOU AREN'T MARRIED TO, DAMMIT!! (Didn't I already mention this? Yeah, see #2 above since it bears mentioning repeatedly! LMAO ) I oftentimes (? Well, once in a while) wonder what ever happened to that married couple as well as the Sgt. Are they still married? Is the Sgt. still alive? Will we EVER know who was in the Grassy Knoll in Dallas? You know. IMPORTANT Stuff. Hahahahaha!) I PCS'd from that duty station shortly thereafter and ended up in Europe (Germany) for the next 26 months and didn't give it another thought for the longest time as I had plenty of other things to concern myself with afterwards. (PS, if you happen to be that dumbass Sgt. and happen to read this, chime in and lemme know if you survived and went on to more messing around. Or got shot "better" for your efforts. LMFAO) 🤣

You made one incorrect statement that the American made .25 autos were not as small as the imports. They were of the same size. Also not all of them were junk. I have a Raven MP-25 and it's actually a very reliable little pistol even if it's made of pot metal. It's also surprisingly accurate. I don't carry as I don't have a CCP, but if I did, I'd feel perfect comfortable carrying it. The only negative thing about it is that it's safety is not very safe to carry with a round loaded in it. So you'd have to to train drawing it while racking the slide regularly. Also 11" of penetration is still likely to penetrate deep enough to do significant damage. Back in the 80's and early 90's I remember these little guns being responsible for a hell of a lot of gang murders. It's definitely not something you want to get hit by. It's also significantly more reliable than 22LR which is why it surprises me that it never fully replaced 22LR. I can only assume that it's because the longer range (relatively speaking at 100 yards) ballistics through a rifle is probably not as good.

The caliber is not the issue. The barrel length is. A 4 inch barrel would take those to 14 inches. But the hollow points would open up and penetrate less deep. Short barrels are loud. The powder that fails to push the bullet as fast as a riffle would goes to a louder bang.

Good information about the 25 I personally own a titan 25 that I inherited years prior that was used in a self defense shooting back in the mid 70s during the altercation the guy was shot twice did stop him from the attack but from what I heard the police picked him up walking down the road a few blocks away and was taken to the hospital where he died 3 days later its a ok round but wouldn't trust for a everyday carry

.25 is fine for situations where you need to be able to carry a gun in places where you have to keep it well-hidden, but if you have the opportunity to carry anything larger, you should. .25 ACP is absolutely lethal if you can hit vital spots precisely with every shot without hindrance, but why leave anything to chance when you don't have to.

That’s interesting I thought the 25 ACP was weaker than that, because We seen a guy looking for 25 ACP, The guy behind the counter ask him what he was getting it for because it’s not known to be a good killer, we are were all surprised by what he said, he said I don’t want to kill them they’re my friends, I just need something to protect myself, always wondered what he meant by that

25 ACP was actually popular right up until the early 2000s when many 32 acps started to emerge and reliable 22s.... Then in the mid-2000 s 380 pocket pistols became the greatest thing since sliced bread and 25 and 32 became passe.. 22 pocket pistols we're still popular because of the low cost of practice ammo.... Despite most manufacturers dropping 25 ACP and 32 ACP many people still carry them.. as you don't see many used 25s especially the quality ones on the shelves... In fact the high quality used 25 s are still going for quite a expensive price for a so-called antiquated cartridge..

I wonder about those escaping rounds and how they tend to arc upwards. Could it be due to the lack of compressibility of the gel laying on the solid table that wants to let the projo take the path of least resistance, hence up or to one side or the other? Of all the tests I've seen on this medium and others, I have YET to see a projo arc downwards, striking the table below. Is this due to the gel density characteristics letting the projo travel the path of least resistance? Perhaps if the gel was suspended on a "grill" of some sort that, while holding it in suspension, allows the gel to "flex" as it wants. Another alternative could be to support an additional gel block above and to each side to capture any errant and squirrely projo's without compromising the free-standing characteristics of not-compressed gel. (From above, maybe hold that block suspended in a vacuum without changing the density characteristics appreciably. Those to the side shouldn't cause any problems I wouldn't think but with Full Disclosure: I'm no Scientist. Just some food for thought and my $0.02 worth on the topic. Your thoughts?
@ralphm.chavez56033 жыл бұрын
...a bullet will travel in a path of least resistance. That bullet that flew right on out was very near the edge of gel block. It flew "upwards" because of least resistance.

On our ranch, when we have finished taking orders for beef and hog meat, the livestock is dispatched the same way we’ve been doing it for decades. Pawpaw’s old Baby Browning .25 that he brought home from the war. It’s the same CC I use in the summertime when I’m out at a festival wearing short shorts, flip flops, and no shirt. It’s the same pistol that cost me a $869 carpet replacement bill when my house was broken into. Whether it’s that 600lb hog, the 1100lb beef cow, or a 170lb methhead, it requires proper shot placement. Nothing was quite as upsetting to see as a full grown cow being shot in the side of the head with a 9mm and going into violent spastic convulsions nearly destroying the sheet metal tubing slot pen because the shot did not immediately kill it. Hint-never let someone who doesn’t know about killing attempt to kill.

The common notion is that the 25acp is an anemic, under-powered, not good for anything but popping balloons. There are several variable that determine the power of a pistol including the barrel length, caliber, bullet weight, and the amount of energy that the cartridge expends inside the firing chamber in pounds per square inch (PSI). The 25 cartridge itself is not anemic at all when it comes to energy released. Some examples of other calibers from SAAMI standards : 44 Special 15,500 psi 38 Special 17,000 38 Special+P 20,000 32acp 20,000 380acp 21,500 45acp 21,000 45acp+P 23,000 Where do you think the 25acp is in this lineup? 25acp 25,000 Now the 9mm,40cal,357mag are all 35,000 and 44mag is 36,000psi The 25acp is not exactly chopped liver, its the length of the barrel that matters most (or lack of) in the mouse guns. So don't let anybody tell you about how piss poor and low life the 25acp cartridge is.
@jano24296 жыл бұрын
paul, your physics is not good. PSI is a unit of pressure not unit of energy. 25,000 PSI in a small volume like 25 ACP cartridge can represent much less energy than 15,000 PSI in much bigger brass case. Ask your teacher......

@illuminatedcrosshairs78656 жыл бұрын
paul mcmanus what in the hell are you talking about? Psi? Pounds per square inch? Really? You ever heard of ballistics? Bullet ballistics? There is nothing whatsoever in them to do with psi. Muzzle energy and muzzle velocity and the trajectory chart on flight! You need to go check your tire pressure?😳 the 25 is less powerful than all the other calibers you mentioned by far!!!
@bigsean24735 жыл бұрын
these are chamber pressures that the round makes in the barrel when fired. not the energy it has when it leaves the barrel. you can have 45000psi and still have 123 foot pounds of energy
@stargazer2042 Жыл бұрын
The ammo is fine for self defense. The problem is the barrel is too short. Add half an inch or an inch to get to 12-13 inches. And skip the hollow points.

as a backup gun, for like deep concealment for Law enforcement (space and carry options are very limited with the gear thats already worn, along with the type of work done and retention needed), I can see some justification in that field for carrying. It's not the primary arm, and more than likely is only going to be used in a close hand to hand struggle where the duty weapon is either inaccessible or compromised (ie fighting over it). Outside of that... it's better than NO GUN... but there are better options out there.

Good video. I'd like to see more ballistics gel tests on older ammo that used to be in regular usage such as .32 S&W long, that was used for years in NYPD and also S&W Super police / British 38/200 that were essentially the same round and saw extensive use militarily and with police forces across the world. All three must have been considered worthwhile to have such longevity.
