I was born a strawberry blond, a form of redheaded-ness. As I got older I lost most of the red highlights in my hair as it got darker, but genetically, I'm still a redhead. Redheads also need more anesthesia. This is why I woke up THREE times during my ACL replacement surgery. My orthopedic surgeon and the anesthesiologist didn't realize I was a genetic red head. This also contributes to my being allergic to nearly all opioid narcotics.

I once had a very unusual experience with an MRI. I was placed on the sliding table the goes in, and the machine was started. The techs were surprised to get a message from the machine instructing them to insert patient. They were in the control room and could see the machine through a window. Only my feet were sticking out. They asked me to wiggle my feet. Odd, I thought. After about 5 minutes they took me out of the machine, and returned me to a special waiting area. A while later, I saw another patient come out of the room with the MRI in it. Then they took me back in. Again, they got the message the machine was ready to scan and they needed to insert a patient. They ended up contacting the machine's manufacturer to find out what they should do as they didn't understand what was going on. They were informed that there is a very small percentage of the population that seem to be able to scramble their image inside an MRI. The manufacturer then informed them that I would be the 6th person on record for the country that I live in to have that trait. 6 out of the then 33 million people living there. Strange, yes. But also true.

Speaking of mri's, this fact's a LOT darker. Make sure you remove all metal before going into one of those, or else it could be literally ripped out. I can't have an mri anymore because 10 years ago I had spinal fusion surgery, and there's metal in my body. So if I had one, let's just say it would be messy, I'd be dead, and there'd probably be bits of me all around the room

It’s also good to let them know you drink for the same reason. Also they need to know how much you smoke. If you have general anesthesia and are a heavy smoker they need to be aware because you may have a tough time breathing on your own once your surgery is over. It is expected that you will be able to have the tube removed from your throat even before you leave the operating room. A heavy smoker may not be able to breathe on their own and could very easily need the tube to remain in place and a ventilator necessary to provide the help needed to maintain your oxygen level . The anesthesiologists that I worked with preferred their patients O2 levels to be at 90% or better. As Mike said, no judgement. It’s for your safety that they ask these questions.

I'm a moderately heavy smoker (usually under 50 per day) and smoke weed daily (usually 2-3 grams) and my O2 is 96 and don't remember ever being told I needed more anesthesia. I also get prescribed a good amount of opioids for chronic pains. Maybe I'm just a weirdo lol

Re #2: one of the posters instructing on hand washing techniques that was posted next to sink stated that there are move bacteria living under that ring on your finger than here are people in Europe. As the infection control nurse I performed an experiment. I took off one of my rings and placed it in a petrie dish, let it sit for five minutes, then pulled it out and placed the dish in a warm dark place. I then washed my hands including the scrub under the rings. Then followed the same process for inoculating the petrie dish. 48 hours later the first dish was over grown with more than a dozen different bacteria and smelled like toe jam on steroids. The post-washing dish still had bacteria, but WAY less. Ever since I make sure I scrub under my rings and remove them before cooking food.

I’m a retired nurse. I once read an article that said that as an experiment some nurses volunteered to have their rings swabbed and cultured. They found as many as 26 different creeping cruds in their rings. I took my rings off and never wore it again while on duty. I can’t stand to see nurses caring for patients with long fake nails either. Just thinking about the junk living under those nails is enough to make you want to barf!
@cindystrachan8566
@cindystrachan8566 17 күн бұрын
@ When I taught nurses those long nails were an issue for me, too. Can’t remember which state it was in but I read them a brief news article about a NICU that had a really high death rate from infection. They finally tracked it down to the long fingernails in the nurses. Once they banned long nails the death rate returned to normal, but not before 16 neonates perished needlessly.

I’m a lab technician in microbiology. I can confirm that the most common place for bacteria to thrive is under jewelry, on your cell phone, under your nails, and believe it or not, on the toilet paper roll. The seat, door handle, etc is not the dirtiest place in a public bathroom!

A retired pharmacy technicican here. When making IV's, we were taught to remove all jewlery, watches, etc. before washing hands. Fingernails were to be cut short. We cleaned under fingernails with a pick before washing hands. Before being allowed to make IV's, we had to put on gloves and then touch a petri dish with growth media. We had to do this 3 times with zero growth before being allowed to make IV's. We were also tested at random where someone would come in while we were making IV's and we had to touch the growth media after completing the IV we were working on. Just putting on gloves without contaminating them can be a challenge. Watching nurses handle drugs made me nervous

I try to tell people that I can't always recognise people, but they just say everyone's like it. I can recognise close family and people I have constant contact with. It's been a nightmare all my life. Two years after I left school, I couldn't even recognise people who had been in the same class. It's lonely as well. Apparently, it can be part of autism but it isn't officially recognised.

Oh, yes I can. I can recognize some faces, but can't tell the names associated with them, the places I "should" remember them from, or how long ago it was when I last saw them. I have no context at all. Asking, "do I know you?" when I'm hugged embarrasses me, but I think it should embarrass them, too. The moment you feel any stiffness or resistance, you should back off! I hate being hugged by non-family. Of course I hate being hugged by some family, too.

My eustachian tube in my left ear collapsed due to chronic sinus issues that I developed after Hurricane Katrina. The constant home renovations and repairs of the houses of family and friends that we all pitched in together to accomplish irritated my sinuses and resulted in chronic sinus infections. Previously, I had never had a sinus infection in all 23 years of life but the mold and mildew covering EVERYTHING after the storm was impossible to avoid even with masks. This caused my Eustachian tube (in the inner ear) to collapse. It made it impossible to equilibrate the pressure inside my ear. It wasn’t really painful, but it made the sound of my blood flow to sound like a squeaking noise. Every. Single. Moment. Of. The. Day. The sound was drowned out during the day by the usual noise of life, but at night, while trying to sleep…all I could hear was the persistent squeak and skwelchy noise that kept time with my pulse. I eventually had to wear headphones all night to keep myself from losing my mind. It was like a form of torture! After taking antihistamines for months and months and nose sprays and humidifiers…it finally stopped. I would never be able to deal with constant tinnitus though!

I've had insomnia as long as I can remember ... and I'm near 60.... Nothing helps. Anyway, I can also vouch for how starving will lead to the lack of menstruation. As I didn't have a period for over 2 years... When I was married I pretty much starved for the entire 8 years I was married. Not long after my son was born I quit having my period. I thought I was pregnant again or something but never bothered to find out. Then I just didn't care. Anyway, I got a new job and they wanted me to have a physical. And well they asked and I said it'd be over 2 years since my last period. Well they put me on the pill near instantly ..... well then I got pregnant again. Not ONCE did anyone ask why I wasn't having my period. I could have told them. I knew why... I knew I was starving. Since then I got divorced and well... food was suddenly available to me. The stress on my body from that time is still very obvious. Was not a good time. Just saying.

Heavy cannabis use reduces the effectiveness of anesthesia??? That is a first. I am a Iraq/other vet, and an adrenaline junkie, or was. I've been, shot, broken my collar bone, four dislocated shoulders (oooof the pain of that is a12,) broken, dislocated my ankle and tibia the same day. So I don't know how I am still alive, but the chicks dig the scars of shrapnel and incisions. Not once was I asked if I was a stoner. As a matter of fact, when I broke my radius, almost, looked like that fucking insane dude from "No Country for Old Men" had the car crash, I had my glass pipe in pocket. I am not a heavy user, but when I was going into the OR, the nurses like to talk to you until, lights out, you wake up back in the recup room. But I am so resistant to the Propranolol, the milky stuff. The surgeon/anesthesiologist were like, just before surgery. The nurses were, uh, nope, this fucking guy is is still fully awake. They give me fentanyl. I was out in less than 10 seconds. They only asked me if I could be allergic to fentanyl. But never a weed user. That IS weird.

When you talk about removing things through the nose, how do you think the ancient Egyptians started at the modification process basically what they did was stick a metal rod up your nose, breaking into the brain cavity, scrambling it up like a gig and then sucking it all out through your nose. One unfortunate person was chosen to cut the body in a certain spot and then immediately pelt it something to do with a religious practices, and then the rest of the priest would remove your bodily organs, your heart, your liver, your lungs, and then they would dump a whole bunch of. Natron which is a type of salt to dry the body out the more you know

The muscles”fact” depends on body type. 29 is a too small sample. Íˋm lucky in as much as I only need to look at the weights and I put on muscle. But I worked out with guys who would put in so many hours of working out and grow nothing. The downside , though is I also put on fat easier too. I see people around me turning eating crap into an Olympic sport and not gain weight whereas I only look at a biscuit and I put on a stone of fat. You win some, you lose some.
