Life's busy and I'm trying to break the routine, work slower, empty my head and in this video I tell you how I do this and what I'm learning.
I was not happy with a commissioned watercolorpainting I just finished for a client and I started another one. That was quite hard, but the video starts with working outside again, in a meadow close to Amsterdam.

You know your belief you don't have to make the perfect picture every time is really freeing. I like the fact you are willing to destroy a work to gain understanding of why it doesn't feel complete. It removes the fear of making a mistake, helps you to enjoy the journey of painting and frees you to start again with a new approach. I use to have a thinking that everything I painted had to be the final piece. I would be disappointed if the painting didn't turn out how I imagined. I would think I had failed. But now I see it as a research project where you start with an idea n approach, sometimes you get it first time and other times you get understanding and insight, but not the final result you were after. I like this way of thinking.

Isn’t that the same as in everyday life? No one can tell you in the beginning what to do and how to do it. For me in making art it’s the same. It changes. And you must anticipate

Enjoyed the plein air intro - I need to get off my butt and try one. Good decision on the white building redo; except for the possible need of foliage a restricted palette of burnt sienna and ultramarine blue would be an interesting tryout for that subject.

From what I could see after rewinding a few times it contains beautiful warm and cool tones that mingled very happily on the paper. The white building is like playing with the shadows of the snow. It looks really nice. I used to say when someone would say what I just said to you that there was still time to mess it up. My attitude is not like that anymore either because I just say that it will get repainted if that happens. I look forward to seeing it complete if it is in your future agenda. Please no cliffhangers 😊

For anybody wondering I believe the English name for the long thin brushes is a “rigger”, they hold a lot of paint and are ideal for lines

I agree... something needed to change with the white building... the painting of the statue with the green flag is amazing because just the simple placing of a colorful flag in wind brought that whole painting to life.... do you think working from photos so much can deaden what we make? I think for me it does... I have to be really careful not to make it just like - or too similar to - the photograph, otherwise theres a deadness....sometimes its a search to work from the inspiring photo yet escape that photo, going beyond to bring my own imagination in.... arent we all so lucky we love to paint!

Titus,I have watched all your videos and wanted to say how much I appreciate the time and effort you put in to posting them. The contect is excellent! I Love your work and approach to your creative lifestyle. As an aside, the brush you show at 18:12 in the video is not a rigger (which does not have dual hair type/length) as suggested elsewhere and I suspect it is closer to the Casaneo series 5599 inlaid liner, although yours looks a little more worn from use? Users of the 5599 say that the hairs become quite soft when wet? Keep up the great videos which I await with anticipation each week, all the best :)

I found your visualization segment fascinating. The negative example you gave is in fact the one that works best for me. I find states of alignment do not produce the inner tensions, antinomies and deadlocks that open my thought processes. Which probably makes me a Maoist; there's chaos under heaven, all is well!

Hi I use the cheapest ordinary tape I can find. We call it “painters tape” in holland and they sell it in many shops

Ik dacht eerst met de opzet, van wat doet ie nou?😬:) Maar daarna zag ik dat licht en donker en vooral donker sterk wordt geaccentueerd. Persoonlijk schilder ik de luchten lichter, zet niet zo zwaar in. Maar dat heeft te maken met stijl, wel heel leuk. Maar ik zag dat je een penseel hebt die wat bewerkt is. Die met waar je de boombladeren mee schildert, stukje ingeknipt?

Hi thanks! I use an ordinairy mechanic pencil. It’s easy to handle because it doesn’t get smaller cause if sharpening and it stays sharp!

Titus, how do you deal with creative dryspells? There is the frenzy of the rough draft when it is moving rapidly along, and then when you lose your way, and nothing... A fallow time?

Hi. I think the answer is quite simpel; I start at 9 am and work until 6 pm without knowing what will happen. Sometimes it goes worse sometimes it goes very well. Sometimes it’s hard sometimes it’s easy. Certainly since I have kids I feel I must spend my expensive time in the studio alone

Hi! The blues are cobalt and ultramarine. The yellows are ochre cadmium bismuth and hansa. The reds are cadmium pyroll and carmine (be careful with the last one) and the greens are viridian and pyrelene

It's interesting to me to hear how you've spoken about time and speed a lot in this video, and compared to how struck you were while interviewing Amid and how fast he spoke about working. Do you think that interactions with another artist like that can influence how we interact with our own art? @@TitusMeeuws Yeah! It's really great hearing how your philosophy blends into your creative process. I think your analogy about qualities as chakra was pretty spot on. For me, that process emerges when giving attention to the heart chakra, the anahata, which is interestingly placed right around the deviation you highlighted at "passion". I can't help but wonder if you depicted that intentionally or if it emerged organically from your visualization!

Mtro. I love your painting in the nature, birds, wind, brushes, bottle water, all the sounds while you creating this. And then you bring us to the inner part of you the one you have and feeling while making decisions, so incredible to see this with your own words...as soon as you draw those circles l thought Chakras and a few minutes later you say chakras. I have to think and read about it. And then the paint l was confuse by a moment because you say you will do one more, and then l see you with the painting working on. Excuse my lack of knowledge but this is me, l can not throw what l create, so l do another and watch the other to remain me what l do not want to repeat. And must say the cars in front how they got there, do they have space to came out and in??? I am confused too. When l should paint close to the reality and when not to. Again, perhaps l don't know to Express myself and the proper and correct manner, my apologies.

Sudarshana Chakra is found as a discus symbol on the palm of the Deity Vishnu. 'New agers' use the term chakra to refer to a subtle type of energy system in the body, but 'Chakra' is a Sanskrit word with extremely ancient roots, and Chakra means far more than relating to these bodies. You strike me as a philosopher type, someone who is somewhat meditative. A quiet mind is able to tap into profound creativity (which is clearly expressed in your paintings). Ancient Sanskrit is the language used to explain the Vedas (which I suspect you would love). The Upanishad portion of the Vedas reveals knowledge about mantra, which is used to control and quieten the mind in order to enable it to tap into (this is actual yoga) the origin of creation itself. Some of the Old Masters attribute their talent to God, that they were merely the vessel that the talent flowed through. I think that the more self-controlled one is, the greater the is the art that is produced. You must have a very calm mind. :) Your artwork is masterful, thank you for your generosity in sharing your quiet time with us all.
