This week I brought some watercolors to another gallery in South Holland and I started a new commissioned watercolour of Deventer, where I did the preparations in the previous video.

The title says it all and I get tired of hearing artists (and wannabe artists) say- "I just need to find my style. I just need to find my voice." That's not how it works. Just do the work and it will define itself.

"Style is not a choice. It's the result." Just this title shed light on being an artist. I'm lucky to have a wonderful, deep, inspiring coach as I learn to be creative on the piano in my old age. He often says, 'Don't listen to the result'. He's helped me access my inner rhythm, my dark feelings. He wants me to play 'for the feels', his greatest hope for me is that I'll be addicted to how good it feels. No teacher at art college ever said anything like that to me fifty years ago. All we had was a handful of security-loving instructors, no wise KZbin artists.

I too fall under the belief that my newest work is my best and yet time and time again I find myself pleasantly surprised by just how good some of my old work is and wonder why I didn’t think it was so good at the time I painted it… I then remind myself that time away from recent paintings is very valuable as I gain lots of insights into what works and what doesn’t. I rarely get a chance to talk about my art practice with anyone as the only other artist I know is my sister, who lives 130km away from me and we are lucky if we see each other once a year and so there is a lot to catch up on when we meet and it’s just heaven to be able to talk art with her - she paints only in acrylics and I paint only in watercolours. I live in Brisbane, Australia and there aren’t many painting groups here and what few there are, are very far from me but I’d love to attend a weekly art group and lately I’ve been seriously considering starting one up myself in my area to see if there is any interest… I very much look forward to watching your videos. Oh, can you please tell me the brand, type and size of the rigger brush you were using to do your fine lines - it looked like a sable brush and it also looked like it had a bit of rigidity as well - I am yet to find a rigger that I’m happy with, everyone I’ve tried bends too easily. First of all, I recently found your channel and love your videos. Your perspectives are always very thoughtful and your videos have a very high degree of quality. As far as style. I think this was a very interesting topic for you to cover as I think so many of us start out trying to find or create a style versus it occurring naturally through our work. I see style as more of the result of a process which I think is sort of what you are saying. Your paintings have a distinctive look to them as the result of the process in which you go about creating your work. A light wash followed by midtones and then your shadows that bring out the details and really make your paintings pop. Your focus on light as your subject and the way in which you go about creating your paintings, create this distinctive look to your work. Great stuff. I know you said you don't do tutorials but as a hobbyist that is more advanced than someone just starting out, I actually think you are creating tutorials naturally by your introspection and painting. For those of us that maybe aren't just starting out but also aren't professional artists, we can learn a lot from you and your thoughts. Thank you for sharing!

First, I just want to say your videos by themselves are very well done, almost like an absorbing mini-documentary. The timing, editing and conversation are all excellent. Thank you Todd. Good question; we are all imprisoned in time. I did speed up my process and trained my focus. With pleasure. The reason for doing this is maybe what you just said; time is money. But now I am able to work faster I must admit that focus is stronger when I work faster. No time to think..

Greetings from New Mexico. I'm a 68 year old that is addicted to art and your videos. I have collected art for years and have upwards of 3-400 pieces of architectural and structural art. Its sort of a joke that the art collect is Junk Art, although many (most) of the pieces are very well done as I try to limit my purchases to $20, however I have to splurge sometimes. Most of this art is somewhat discarded in garage sales and estate sales and antique stores. Because of this addiction of collecting, and my knowledge of perspective from working in construction trades most of my life, I now have now collected much paint of all types, brushes and equipment from prominent artists in my area of the USA. Each piece of equipment has a deep story of each of these artists and I wish I could have known them but obtained through estate sales. I now am addicted to the process of art especially water color and am studying and taking on line courses. I'm getting ready to pick up the brushes as I build my space in my home to perform these wonderful things you all do. I wanted you to know that I'm fascinated with your art, your videos and your style. Its my big pleasure to look forward to spending an hour of two on line watching your videos. Thank you for sharing and inspiring many of us. I know that it is terrific that you don't talk during your videos and I agree that it makes it a nice relaxing watch, but If I could ask, on some of your videos, you modify, change, revise some of your art and if you could explain when you wash a area with water after its been done for some time, hearing from you why you are doing what you are doing would be GREATLY appreciated as we could learn and see why you are revising and what your process is to do such. Thanks again for sharing your life of art, its truly wonderful and I look forward to visiting your part of the world someday. Washing away some parts in a watercolorpainting happens regularly because there is so much to see and explore but it doesn’t make sense to put as much on the paper as you could do. So quite often there is to much disturbing and I wash it away

Mtro. Titus, this is my ever first video l watched of yours. When l started to listen and watching the beginning of your video l felt like l was there with you, but you were not Titus you were Da Vinci and l was there like a boy getting things for you to keep going with those ideas a d put there on the paper. Yes, l have a very imaginative brain, not for me those moments its are real you were once Da Vinci,. Anyway you kept talking and l kept listening, but then you started to paint and close up of your painting, l kept my eyes watching your hand and the strokes that were made by a d how this was following every cell of your mind, body and soul to make the one stroke that needs to be placed to stay there, to live there, to became alive with every piece of all the strokes and brush paint to create one all, and yes l started to cry, and cry and l could not stop, till you started to talk again and l listening, drinking, gobbling them, swallowing them perhaps later on l must sit to let them seat on my brain properly and let them someway somehow to show me again the light on these very dark moments l am in. I just want to say thank you for today's video. I could not watch the all video, it is to much for me in a very good way, l stopped my video when you started to paint Deventer, l will watch the rest of it later.

Very true about working with clients…style as well as your own perceptions. I personally found after a collection of bits of info and sketches the absolute reward in providing the client with more than ‘he could imagine’ the ultimate accomplishment while exercising total freedom in my expression of the project! I just stumbled across your video this morning while preparing to erase as your did in your water color example…only my situation is cutting away layers of acrylic pigment, built over three years of putting it away and returning? Now I’m a few days from a major exhibition and I discovered the initial flaw in the landscape architecture…! It’s already framed from planning years ago, working with my framer …. So if I change this small portion of the ongoing work I will have constructed the personal truth in the documentation of a fragment of our (my?) small north coast community. This is the relentless seeking of the singularity ….is it not, a composite of the ‘sub atomic particle level of awareness’ than the cutting edge of artwork provides society? Is this the Holy Grail of the living arts? You are truthful, thank you, satchitananda…Being Knowledge Bliss. And it’s only 8:42 am in the morning on the coast in Point Arena, California ! Isn’t technology a killer! Please continue to share I’m listening….and at nearly 77 years and counting I’m malleable still? @@TitusMeeuws I am an engineer, not an artist. I am essentially self-taught and began exploring watercolor painting more formally during the COVID lockdown. I have watched numerous videos on watercolor techniques and have extensively studied oil and watercolor painting albums. The people around me have limited knowledge about watercolor, so their feedback has mostly been limited to expressions like "beautiful" and "amazing." I am aware that my current work is not flawless, as there are still many mistakes and challenges in accurately conveying the emotions I feel about the scenes I depict. However, I want to express my deep gratitude as your videos have been tremendously helpful in my artistic journey. It eased my confusion and anxiety about my current artwork. Thank you very much.

I’ve often wondered if I have a ‘distintive’ style. Is it obvious to a person looking at the painting and ‘knowing’ it is mine without really knowing who painted it? I suspect that, among my artistic circle, my subject matter is more of a giveaway (I only do portraits) than a distinctive, recognizable style…e.g. Charles Reid. I agree with you in that style seems to emerge as a consequence of all the images and experiences (emotional and otherwise) and results in a painting that seems recognizable…However, I prefer to think of style as my temperament…how I react to an image and the possibilities of bringing it to life. My temperament always channels me in a direction and effort that might seem recognizable, but I would avoid calling it a style….A wonderful and thoughtful moment you have given us today…

Dear Titus, please forgive an elderly albeit young at heart admirer of your channel should I repeat anything I might have mentioned in previous comments. I couldn't agree with your interpretation of style any more than if I had said it myself. Having seen many of your videos since first being so fortunate to have found them, I believe that I could easily recognize your style should someone set me about a gallery of random paintings. Much as our signature or our handwriting that makes us unique unto ourselves. After thoroughly enjoying today's video, I felt compelled to tell you how much I admire your commitment to your art. Yes, some may say that this is your job. But, to be a successful artist requires so much more than most. Today, you took us through many of the facets required of your field of endeavor and it is a pleasure to follow you along through a typical day. But, the part I most enjoyed was watching you as you began your new commission. From the initial sketching and on to your initial wash. You had me thoroughly entranced with your sense of purposefulness motivated by your very specific vision that you had from the very beginning. It is almost as if your brushwork cannot keep up with your mind. As if an author has a story to tell and his pen cannot put the words to paper swiftly enough to tell the story. Your brushwork is so deliberate, sure and confident yet delicate as need be. In this painting, as always, your use of color, light, shadow and layers produced such a magnificent effect that I can sense the warmth of the stone walls as they are bathed in the waning light. I am always tickled to see you stand back in retrospection and see that you are quite satisfied with today's work knowing that there is much more yet to be done. And to hear your excitement to return to your favorite part, the details. The streetlights, the cars, the people that will bring your vision to life. Your passion for your art, your self motivation, your dedication to planning and your goal oriented commitment will bring you nothing less than great success. interesting perspective. thank you for sharing. ..I have only just recently made my two first illustration commissions and to me, it feels a bit like writing portraits about people - for me, to write good portraits, is to have different styles. cause the writing, the tone of voice, the atmosphere, the words used... all of it should represent the person, I am writing a portrait about. I guess, you painting for somebody, is kinda like the same - you try to "get" and understand the person and the house the painting should hang in and create for this specific circumstance. right?

I’m just curious… do you paint at night at all? Do you have a natural rhythm for the working day? Times you can almost predict that inspiration will flow, or is your routine mostly deliberate? Love your paintings… are you an introvert?

Hi Christina, since I have a family I work from 9 till 6pm. I had to train this, and it works well. When I was in France for a commissioned painting 2 weeks ago I was able to start working whenever I liked. But I got used to that alarm clock at 7 pm I started as usual

My work explores the relationship between consumerist fetishism and counter-terrorism. With influences as diverse as Nietzsche and Frida Kahlo, new variations are generated from both orderly and random narratives. Ever since I was a student I have been fascinated by the essential unreality of the human condition. What starts out as triumph soon becomes manipulated into a tragedy of greed, leaving only a sense of failing and the dawn of a new reality. As spatial derivatives become frozen through boundaries and critical practice, the viewer is left with a clue to the inaccuracies of our condition.
