There is one fact you did not mention: Sub-Zero and Smoke were friends that escaped together to prevent being turned into cyber-ninjas. Smoke was finally captured and sent after Sub-zero who eventually became one too.

Not true. You mistook it for a different timeline where Raiden saved Smoke from being captured, but Kuai Liang was captured instead and turned into a cyborg. He managed to quickly regain his free will. And later his human form was restored, not without Smoke's help. In the timeline you're talking about, Smoke was sent after him to kill, but Kuai Liang helped Smoke to realise that he still had a human soul and take control of his body. They fought Cyrax and Sektor together. It's really sad that people spread misinformation and others just mindlessly upvote it.
