$25 For A $5.000 Overdrive (Too Good To Be True)?
Today I try out the Mosky Golden Horse and also compare it to an J Rockett Archer Ikon, and a Wampler Tumnus. Can this REALLY cheap overdrive do the business or is it a complete dud? At 25 dollars it's certainly not a big investment, unlike a real Klon Centaur. Hope you enjoy!

Guitar players chasing tones are like women chasing the proper make-up. While it does make a difference, every man reading this knows that what makes a woman attractive is elsewhere. Just get an overdrive. Any of them (edit: provided it works). It's what you do with it that counts.

I'm new to the world of pedals and I keep hearing stuff about this 'Klon' thing. I fail to see the obsession with what is just an old pedal that isn't special in any way anymore. Some people simply have more money than brains and like to be shallow show ponies. 'Dear Guitarists, get over it FFS! An ancient Klon obsession is not only boring but childishly stupid.'

I've been seeing the Mosky golden horse and a few other Mosky pedals around, and everyone seems to conclude that they're pretty gosh darned good for the price. J.Rokkit Archer and Wampler Tumnus kinda speak for themselves, and very well rated. Kinda bummed to see the Mosky didn't hold up in this shootout. I have the Ehx Soul food I'd gotten used for a cool $60 and love it. Something that makes the Soul food pretty awesome is a switch inside from Buffered bypass, or True bypass. The buffered bypass is pretty handy if you're running it in front of harder hitting overdrives or fuzz pedals like I do. You had to have seen Josh Scott from JHS put the #2 (actually the first Klon) on Reverb for $500,000 as a troll. It was hilarious.

I bought the Mosky a while back and it does the same 'squealy' thing when the output is pushed beyond half way. However, I used it just the other day in front of a Mesa Mk5/25 in the MkIV mode (halfway on the output of the Mosky)) and it was great as a slight boost to the overall tone but without the squeal. For $25 I guess I can deal with it if used with those settings, at least at home. Personally I cannot believe what the cost of vintage gear is nowadays, especially when it comes to 70's and 80's era Marshalls. I think it is beyond insane to buy an amp or guitar that will cost between $2500 and $5000 when there are so many amps and guitars out there that will do a great job for a hell of a lot less. Playing club gigs is not exactly a place where I'd feel comfortable walking in with a $5000 PRS or semi- vintage Strat or Les Paul, much less an early to mid-70's Marshall JMP. I've had 2 of those monsters and wish I had kept them, but to buy another one nowadays? Forget it...the most I've spent on an amp in 40 years was about $1600 for the Mk5/25, and another $1500 for a new Jeff Beck Strat I bought last summer. Both are great additions to my gear collection...

purhased a silver horse . its a great sounding pedal BUT - it uses the 7660s charge pump ic chip . this means one thing - heterodyne oscillation . if you are ONLY running this pedal into an actual amp - you will never have an issue . if you run this pedal along with another device sharing a ground and this device has a CLOCK you CAN experience a high pitched whistle , especially on patches using modulation effects . for me it was running the silver horse in the effetcs loop of my nux mg30 . i was able to remove the substandard and much cheaper 7660s chip and install a proper max1044 charge pump . the max1044 osc outside of the range of human hearing . the lesson here is this - if you are no experiencing any high picthed whistling with your silver horse thats fantastic and i am happy for you . look into the 7660s chip , its a real issue . its actually pedal building 101 when it comes to charge pumping . why one would solder this chip into an audio circuit is beyond me , well i get it , its a much cheaper chip but ...lest sell the pedal for 2 more dollars and just cut the right chip in next time , guys. its not a simple procedure as they failed to install a socket and there is a secondary pcb blocking the solder points so good luck . but yeah i am just making all this up ... there isnt a reddit post ... oh wait .

Lol, I've got the silver and gold version of that pedal. It's not bad at all, it's definitely worth $25 if you're after that sound. I've got a Wampler Tumnus and the Electro-Harmonix Soul Food, they're excellent pedals and well worth the money if you're after the "transparent" overdrive thing. The Tumnus is it's own thing though, Brian Wampler likes big bottom end in his pedals. It's got a girth that's satisfying. Shane from InTheBlue compared the Soul Food to his Klon KTR and they sounded identical. Btw, neither of my Mosky Horses make that terrible high pitched whine.

I did buy one of these "clones" off eBay recently (funnily enough) down here in Aussie (but it's different to the one you're testing - looks just like the original in it's housing and doesn't hiss) and it's ok for what it is and what it cost. It's noise friendly (doesn't make a racket in the background) and gives an ok overdrive tone but I'd love to have a $5000.00 original that's for dang sure. I think it'll stay on the board for a little while anyway until the novelty wears off at least maybe longer if she behaves herself and does her job. I do use it as a clean boost as well. Mind you I blend it with a Timmy and a Soul Food. "You get what you pay for" they say, but $5000 is just ridiculously expensive for any pedal. Thanks for the upload, Elmo. Keep 'em comin' bloke.

My most expensive guitar gadget is the Katana amp I purchased after my Roland Cube from the surplus electronics store went down for the third time. Here's two cents (maybe a nickel or 10 cents as Euro guys don't have nickels) opinion regarding these pedals. I've had some electronics training. All these components from which the pedals are made have tolerances. For example you can buy resistors of 1 percent tolerance, 5 percent tolerance, 10 percent or 20. These tolerances will propagate. Sometimes they cancel out. Sometimes they add. So - if you manufacture 100 pedals, no two will be exactly the same. Now hopefully the differences are small, but it just makes sense that cheap pedals will have a greater variation. Basically, some are better than others. Maybe, you got the bad one. (I also wonder how much are the parts in that pricey Klon.) There's two cents worth from a beginner guitarist. Thanks for the video.

Good comparison but unfair comments at times if I'm honest. That whistling noise in the Mosky is due to the fact that it has the voltage doubling circuit inside to lift the power rails and to produce a -9V rail. This works around a high frequency oscillator which will inject some high frequency noise if the designers are not careful. When you maxed the gain you immediately gave that slight noise the ability to rise to the level of a signal. With a little internal tweaking, (which you shouldn't have to do), it can be made usable. Screening the power section and attention to grounding could sort that issue. It still works under those conditions, it isn't "broken", its build and implementation are just noisy! I have one coming and I'll report whether mine does this and what I can do about it. And to say it is unusable because it is noisy in a few regions of its settings is unfair. It worked with your noise gate - so it works, it's just noisy! It held up its own end in the tone stakes. If you tweak your guitar/amp tone controls you can make these all sound exactly the same even though there may be slight differences at the same settings. It doesn't stink, the one you were given was noisy. Have you tried others to see whether they are all as noisy? The "joy of vintage gear" is completely overridden when idiots pay $5,000 for something which has less than $10 of components inside in a circuit which is available all over the internet. (And I speak as an owner of a good few bits of extremely expensive REAL vintage gear which I have owned since the 60s when I paid sensible money for it.)

According to what I've read, the earlier iteration of this model had issues with the charge pump circuitry. This would cause them to emit the sound that was happening in this video. Also have seen that the switch on the Silver Horse is sometimes non functional. So goes it with 30 dollar pedal I guess. I've got a Silver Horse comin' in this coming week......We shall see.
@IAmWatcher

The switch on the Silver Horse only seems to work at higher volume and gain levels. Other than that it sounds pretty much the same as the gold one, is what I have learned from watching countless reviews. I just love pedals, the more the merrier, but I refuse to pay €300 for 'boutique' if I can have the same sound for €25, so I'll be ordering Mosky's Silver and Gold Horse over at AE for 22 euros each lol. Can't go wrong for that money and I stopped gigging ages ago so never mind if there's a bit of hum on my HUMble home set up.

I thought for sure mine would produce the same noise when used as a boost into my all tube Marshall. Well, I just plugged it in, using my fender strat... and this thing kicks ass! No noise like yours produced when used as a boost and also used with max gain etc, and as quiet as my boss blues driver, my Archer, my soul food, my vintage tube screamer and newer tube screamers, my simble overdrive etc. It sounds great on all settings, to reiterate there is something wrong with yours.

Hi. Interesting product failure. I had my 2010 Gibson Les Paul Custom fail on me too after 2 weeks the neck pickup stopped - turned out it needed a re solder on volume pot. I bought the Mosky Silver Horse as an experiment also, it still works BTW, not really being a pedal liking person as I prefer/enjoy maintaining the original amps tone and frequency range, in the particular the bottom end. After watching this I took it out of a bag and played with it again, I found the Silver horse does a really good boost operation that let's your amp sound the as it does just boosted and mildly enhanced with some nice harmonics coming through. With following settings in terms of a clock face. Tone 9, gain 9, volume 12 or to taste, switch in up position. Sounds good through the Boogie amp I used just now. Thanks for the video! Regards.

Well... I have a decibelics golden horse. It’s an exact Klon copy, and it sounds exactly like a Klon.$279+tax. The Mosky Golden horse is VERY similar. It’s a little bit harsher. This may/may not be a bad thing. I use mine for a little extra gain for certain solos. It’s works great and the change in tone is almost inaudible. It does warm it up and it also gives it “something”, not sure what, but it does change the tone just a little. If your using the Mosky for blues, you may notice the difference. If your using it for rock, the fact that it’s slightly harsher sounding is not a terrible thing. There is a video that compares all of the more expensive clones with the Decibelics. The conclusion is the Mosky is the most accurate of them all. The real difference in all of them being, the Decibelics and the Klon use germanium transistors. Let’s face it, for $25 (I paid just under $20 a few years ago) even if it’s only decent it’s still a bargain. Bottom line: Imfeel the Mosky is the best next to a Decibelics.

I have a Klon KTR (surface-mount PCB version of the Centaur) and it's a fantastic pedal, but definitely not worth the 700-800 they're bringing on the used market. There's a hilarious shootout on one of Josh Scott's livestreams where he compared a Caline Pegasus klone against his serial no. 2 Centaur and, once dialed in, they sounded absolutely identical. Doesn't surprise me that a 25-dollar pedal gave up a few minutes in, but those J. Archer or Wampler pedals sound epic. Great demo as always.

Hiya Elmo! Since I’m basically in the poorhouse as well, as an Amazon Vine member so far I’ve ordered 24 mini-pedals of all sorts since I only have to pay taxable value for them in exchange for reviews. As you’ve demonstrated, some are pretty bad, but on the other hand I’ve found many that are impressive considering their asking prices. The best I’ve tried are made by MOORE and AZOR (also have three of their power supplies, never a problem), which rarely fail to disappoint. EX and SONICAKE pedals seem to be hit or miss, but at least some of them are acceptable, at least for my meager needs. Anyway, just my two cents!

Well, today my Mosky Golden Horse pedal arrives. paid about 33$ on Amazon, and it is a quaint, cute little pedal about half the width of my BOSS Super OD pedal. I used it on my Blackstar ID Core 10 V3, using the Super Crunch voicing with the gain set low, ISF knob favored towards a British "Sound", and the Mosky GH pedal 100% drive, 60% Level, and 75% Treble setting, and boy, this fucking pedal DOES NOT disappoint! Damn Elmo, these companies should pay you. You realize you are responsible for me having purchased a Blackstar ID Core 10 V3, the Fender Micro-Mustang headphone amp, and now this awesome cool-ass little pedal I'd known nothing about if I didn't see your video on my feed lol! While I obviously would never pay 5K for a fucking pedal, the 33$ this little gem cost me was more than generous. I love this little pedal. The OD is lush to harsh, as I've played around with it. I'm not thrilled with the sound of a Klon anyway. I've seen a blind fold test where the guitarist thought the Tumnus was the Klon. I sometimes need distortion is when using a looper as you have to run the amp clean. $5000? hah

Well, let me put it this way...I’ve only been playing for two years. (Yep! I just learned a lot from watching you and many others in the guitar community on KZbin.) I’ve reviewed the reviewers. And at this point, as good as all of you who I watch regularly actually are, I’ve judged you to be the tip of the top. If you tell me your favorite, I will buy that one. Not a pedestal are you on, my friend (and I would honestly consider you one🤟🏻) but I just trust you as a gold standard authority.

Just some thoughts your review brings up for me.. I’ve owned a few now expensive vintage pedals (old Sovtek stuff, 70s USA made Electro Harmonix.. early Watkins Copicat etc..) . All stupidly sold a while back when I was totally broke. Of course the value goes up and up and there can be an investment factor to buying anything vintage if you are sensible. My feelings on the sound of all these vintage units? I would treat them as collectors item. They are cool to own and play with but the mystique seems to be more based in the nostalgic than the actual sound you get. And if something in the pedal does break/fail and you can’t replace with an original component suddenly the value can drop dramatically. After all this my feelings are good modern versions or clones are often more reliable and often have extra functionality that makes them way more useable with very few exceptions.

25$ for a (reel Klon price when produced) overdrive. That would be an honest tittle

People have got ridiculous even before covid with used gear. I just buy new anymore. I would never buy any gear especially 5k for something you can build yourself from the OG schematic. Even JHS said he talked to the guy that built the Klon & the guy said the Klons are all the same no matter the color or graphic.

been using mosky now for 6 years .they work there great sound but build quality is what you get for 20 bucks. i think the archer is the best here but ive a mosky and it will do the same.if not i like how the mosky like the real klon does not fizzle out in the top end as much as the other 2.im not a fan of the wampler at all its positions are not like a klon.why didnt i keep my klon.my bb butler tube driver my dean markley warlock tube pedal.i could buy a house.my fav mosky is the xp booster and the tai ji drive oh there power supplys arent to bad

Not "Theoretically" the same but not necessarily worse than the $5000 KLON either. IMO each player needs to do whatever it takes to get the sound they want. If your sound can be achieved for only $25 then that is a good thing indeed. Great review Elmo. I mostly use the Archer Gold, however I've got maybe 9 other overdrives I use from time to time. $5000 for any piece of equipment pretty much out of reach for all of most and especially so for only a single pedal! Again, great comparison.

"...it'd better have heroes of ancient Greece roaring out of your speakers", ha, ha! It'd better have a real Centaur coming to you and tweak your sound magically to perfection! Centaurs in Greek mythology were healers with magical powers so, for $5.000, they should take care of my sound and heal it from noise and bad tone in general. If not, I will try a Tumnus or an Archer, or I'll wait for you to make a video comparing the two! Cheers!

The only way I would pay $5,000 for a pedal is if it came with a pound of weed, a case of vodka, a sex worker and snacks for later! 1400 is the most I’ve spent on a piece of equipment (guitar).
