The Wayne's World movie is the last gasp of the 80s era that happened in the early 90s just before the collapse of the heavy metal industry, the rise of rap, and pop, and the next stage of computer evolution. In essence, it's the world, just how it looked before the Internet takes hold, Puff Daddy, Manson, and Boy Bands.

The comedic style was in keeping with early 90's SNL (since that's where the cast and writers came from), the visual style was grunge-inspired (long hair, flannels, and T-shirts), and there's a distinct fascination with late-60's counterculture, as was popular in the early '90's.

My family moved to an Upper Midwestern town like Aurora the year this movie came out and I think it's hilariously accurate, if anything. Besides, every decade's culture tends to bleed into the first few years of the next one. There were still greasers in the early 60s, hippies in the early 70s, discos in the early 80s, etc.
