Good video. It’s nice to see someone actually pressure test a lower. Such a simple task many overlook. I know most don’t have a Mightyvac but it’s well worth the money if you work on your own brakes. Anyways, nice to see someone have attention to details and try to diagnose problems like you did with the thermostat vs just throwing money and parts at them.

How do you remove the brass ring under the water hosing? Where you were initially testing to see if bubbles were coming through. I don’t see anywhere to lift the brass out and I need to change the gaskets in there
@LivetofishOutboardRepair7 ай бұрын
The brass ring is actually a sleeve that houses the drive shaft roller bearings and seals. If you need to remove it, I believe you just need to prey it up carefully with a couple of flat head screw drivers.

Awesome video. When I get the chance I'll do this to my grandpas 25. Exact same engine. My 18hp doesn't have the thermostat so that's good.

Thanks Seth. The only issue is with the retainer to release the shift shaft. I ended up breaking this plastic part taking it off. Be careful when you try releasing it. Luckily www.marineengine.com has several in stock.

How much gear oil does the lower unit take???
@LivetofishOutboardRepair7 ай бұрын
I don't have that information, but you just need to pump the gear oil in from the drain plug and fill it until it spills out the vent screw located just under the anticavitation plate.

Do you happen to know how to remove the mid-section housing the drive shaft on this motor? I got the lower unit out but the upper driveshaft o-ring wasn't on it and I need to access where the drive shaft goes into the power head to see if the o-ring is in the housing somewhere and maybe came off when lower unit was removed. It appears the bolts going through the side of the housing near the top need removed to remove the housing.

Dave … this unit does not have an o-ring on the upper driveshaft.

I installed my impeller same as this but it seems like water isn't getting up the copper tube. We're you able to just pull down the copper tube on this
@LivetofishOutboardRepair8 ай бұрын
No, if you pull the copper tube out of the power head you will not be able to get it back in without pulling the power head off. All you should have to do is line up the water tube from the lower unit with the copper tube inside the leg. You most likely misaligned them and so your not seeing it flow out the telltale. If it is properly aligned then you might have a closed "bad" thermostate or poppet valve. If you remove the thermostate housing and Stat and see water coming out then you know you have aligned the waterpump tube properly. If not then remove the lower part of the leg and try again.

I have a problem with my 25 hp Mercury 2-stroke engine. It is pulling the transmission oil towards the exhaust and in addition to that, water is entering the transmission. What could be causing this?
@LivetofishOutboardRepair6 ай бұрын
If you are referring to black unburnt fuel/oil coming from the exhaust this might be from the motor burning rich. It might need a carb clean, spark plugs / wires or new coils to resolve it. Water entering the gearcase would be due to failing seals and will require a pressure/vacuum test to determine which seals need replacing (prop shaft, drive shaft or shift shaft seals).

Was there an o-ring on the upper part of the driveshaft when you removed the lower unit? Mine was apparently supposed to have one but I didn't see it after removing the lower unit. Thanks for your input!

Dave … No this unit did not have the O-ring you described.

Hmmm. I have the same question as a few I have watched had a small washer on the shift lever.
@LivetofishOutboardRepair2 ай бұрын
@ThePepperford go to www.marineengine.com and look up your model number. They have schematic part diagrams that should show the washer you are referencing.
