Hardcore WoW has been rapidly on the rise over the past few months. At it's core its a player made challenge to level a character from 1-60 without dying, and between raids in Wrath Classic, ive been getting rather in to it recently.
So, I thought id share some tips & tricks which I have learned about Classic leveling and hopefully give you a helping hand on your own hardcore journey.

The absolute biggest tip is: run early, run often. If it sucks, hit da bricks. Eventually you’ll come to respect the gut feeling that you shouldn’t do the thing you want to do because it’s too risky, but that can take a while to train

Tbh a lot of people also run way too easily. I've seen so many people die running away instantly when they pulled 2 mobs while on full HP and cooldowns up where they could have easily killed both, and then ended up making more mistakes like pulling more while running and dying.

I have two tips. If you aren't sure you can win the fight, run early. Don't wait until your health is low to run away. Pulling enemies by walking close to them (body pulling) is different than pulling them with an attack from range. Using an attack to pull something is more likely to pull adjacent enemies than simply getting close enough. Sometimes one is better than the other and it takes experience to know which is best. Don't always assume "body" pulling is better.

If you're a caster you can use most fences to kite mobs by jumping on one side to the other.

"What's Training" is another great addon for leveling. It puts a tab in your spellbook that displays the level you gain new spells, how much they cost, and if you can learn a spell but haven't purchased it yet. This is great information to have so you don't waste any trips to the trainer by either not having enough money or not having any meaningful spells to purchase.

Another minor tip regarding dynamic spawning, is that for the Alliance, if you get a new weapon you have no skill in using yet, go to the Deeprun Tram. The Deeprun Rat critters are part of a quest in the Tram, and since they're killable quest related critters with single digit HP and Blizzard figured that would let people grief hard, the Deeprun Rats are capable of hyperspawning. So if you're a Warrior and you just unlocked a Polearm or your Whirlwind Axe and your weapon level is just 1, go down to the Deeprun Tram and start slaying rats. Deeprun Rats will respawn after roughly a 5 second window, so you can grind your weapon levels extremely quickly if you're willing to spend a bit of time huddled in the corner of a subway playing Wack-A-Mole. I discovered this completely on accident when I was taking the tram on my hunter in Wrath and was smacking a few rats to get a couple points in my newly learned staff skill while waiting for the tram to arrive lol

@@nostepsnek1776 thats true but with what I like to call the Rat Strat you can just head to Ironforge, ask a mage to give you Arcane Intellect for easier weapon skill leveling (in Vanilla), then stand in one spot with no risk of dying while grinding weapon level. Hell, last night in Wrath Classic I got my Death Knight to 68 to start questing in Northrend, got my first 2 handed mace, and instantly went to Ironforge to learn how to equip it and spent roughly half an hour to get from Mace Skill 1 to Mace Skill 320

I like killing the boars in one of the pumpkin patches Elwynn Forest. They almost respawn instantly and give boar meat. It helps leveling up early cooking. Also great if you are a skinner.

There is another spot in elwyn forrest by the defias docks there is a goblin there that if you kill him 3 defias brother hood body guards will spawn behind you everytime. By the time you finish killing the 3 guards the goblin respawns instantly. Making it my go to alliance weapons leveling spot

as a warrior, i always tapped a little hamstring right before their bar was depleted. especially when dealing with slow weap speed. extra mob pulling is the big killer.

Remember that if you do something every hour that has a 1% risk of getting you killed, you're not likely to last long enough to make it to 60. I know someone that got a ton of the achievements for completing difficult quests by a certain level, but his luck eventually ran out. Know where the other faction's guards are and don't get anywhere near them. I lost a level 37 Shaman to the AV guards because I had no idea they were there, and I wasn't paying close enough attention while traveling in Alterac. This was a few levels after I was one hit away from getting killed by a Southshore guard because I was questing too close the alliance town. While I didn't die at all from the HC addon death notification pop up ruining my vision or otherwise distracting me, I eventually thought it was going to be all too likely to happen, and left the hardcore guilds on all my characters. While I know a lot of people enjoy the camaraderie, if your goal is to get to 60, it's not worth it. I've come very close to dying due to talking in guild chat as well. You don't need to be in a guild to get dungeon groups; it might be slightly easier, but it's not needed at all. Play more than one character and by doing so get more use out of rested xp to decrease the amount of time playing you need to level a character. It also means that when you eventually die you'll not be starting over from complete scratch. Plus, don't you want to get one of each class to 60 anyway?

Don’t sleep on the “Track X” Hunter abilities; they’ll save your ass being able to notice hyper respawns on the mini map as you explore caves; help you find the named mobs for quests; and keep track of dangerous elites that patrol low level area (stitches; sons of arugal, etc) same with eagle eye if you want to scout areas for mobs or nodes without risking running over to check

@@socjocinus yes they are. the tracking spells check for what kind of mob you want to track. so if you, for example, are looking for The Rake or Broken Tooth for taming they will appear when you track beasts.

Yeah I don’t know why they always say not to pick up the track abilities..they’re so useful. You’re in a cave? Track the type of mob it’ll let you know what’s around the corner before going deeper or what has respawned behind you. Open world, especially near water and murlocs you can tell when they’ve respawned sooner. I will always turn on the track for the specific mobs I’m having to kill for a quest so I don’t get randomly surprised by what’s around me in case I hadn’t seen it

@@IndieNuzzle they say it for the purpose of saving gold while levelling, regular it's nice but not essential, for HC everyone should ignore the "don't buy" mentality and squeeze out as much utility as possible, but for instance I'm not going to get mocking blow on my warrior because it doesn't help me at all, but I'll get every level of sunder instead of stopping at Rank 3, every little bit counts in HC

Also, some more attention for Warlocks: Drain spells (Drain Life, Drain Mana, Drain Soul) do not work on any Mechanical targets, as well as on any Rock elemental or any mob called "Golem".

"Don't snub green difficulty quests" is a good tip in general. Especially if its a longer quest chain with decent rewards at the end. You'll probably gain just as much experience due to completing quests faster anyhow - and won't find yourself in that awkward mid 40's range where finding quests gets trickier and trickier (aka, save Tanaris and Feralas for a bit and do them when they are green quests too). And 100% don't be afraid to just... grind a bit. Getting a few experience bars just killing easy mobs or doing professions to get some choice blue gear will be huge.

@@circles9275 It can happen! Its also avoidable if you're really sweaty about it and have WoWhead to check level brackets to make sure you don't leave a quest too late. And heck, even a grey quest hand in is worth experience - just not much. If you can't avoid dinging before hand in, so be it - just get the most out of killing mobs while they still give experience and hope that the follow up quest is higher level. And heck, some quest rewards are good enough all by themselves.

Great HC Tips: Say the hell out of the Kurzen Cave specifically. Learn how to LOS fight casters, once you get good at it casters, some of the most dangerous mobs in the game, become trivial.

my tip: don't get caught up on the level 40 mount. using your gold at vendors for gear upgrades or potions is way more important than getting around a little faster.

One tip I can also give: be very kindful to the people around you and they might help you out when you least expect. Hand out buffs if you have them, hit their mobs a few times if you happen to walk by, and especially heal them if you see they are close to dying.

I disagree. I plant my feet and watch if I see someone is close to dying. It's a challenge mode and some people don't want help. I know I'm always annoyed when trying a challenging pull and someone heals me or jumps in.

While being kind is good, I dont think it's anyone's responsibility to heal someone if they are dying. Most likely you will then get all the 4-5 mobs he has on him onto you and he wont help you back, he is already half way to Stormwind at that point. "hit their mobs a few times if you happen to walk by" - this can be a nice thing in theory, but some nice guy actually griefed me by doing this exact thing. I was doing the Counter-attack quest in Barrens at lvl 19, pulled the elite mob + his 3 adds, kept the elite feared while killing the adds, then started dotting up the elite, into a few life taps, and then a friendly guy comes along and decides to help, and he breaks my Fear and the elite one-shots me. I had the fight totally planned out in my head, it was going to be an easy W, I would just keep him chain-feared until he was dead. By breaking my Fear this friendly fella killed me, then he finished the elite who was at like 40% and got the quest done with my corpse right beside. So please, if you see a mob that is feared or any other CC, for the love of god, don't "help"! And never risk your own life to save someone unless you're in a dungeon or something. It's just not worth re-rolling from level 31 because you wanted to be a good guy and helped some level 28 who pulled the entire yeti cave. Just let him die, and learn from his mistakes.

Great video for freshies. HC brought back the fun in Wow for me. 3 tips I always give people who want to try it out: 1. *Use enemy nameplates* That way if you pull 2-3 mobs accidentally or intentionally, you can easily assess if it's an okay situation or if you want to get out of there early because you see their health bars clearly over their heads. It's insane how many people, even tanks, seems to be unaware there is such a thing as nameplate (default button V) 2. *Keybinds* for god's sake. Health potions, health stones, mana rubies, Keybind Lay on Hands (pala), keybind Desperate Prayer (priest), keybind Sacrifice (warlock), keybind Iceblock (mage) etc. Use it often in the beginning, even when it's not really necessary, just to get the muscle memory in, because when panic sets in and you really need to save yourself, you don't want to waste time to look all over your bars for something to click while you're running - it should be pure muscle memory and instinct doing the job for you. If I got a penny for every time I saw alliance priests death clips where they don't even use their biggest heal (Desperate Prayer) I would have a dollar at least. Don't be that guy. Honorable mentions for keybinds: Slumber Sand/Magic Dust, Sticky Glue, Light of Elune. Light of Elune can save your life, if you have a DC on a flight path for example! 3. *For dungeons* - if you plan on running dungeons with other hc players, skip the DPS-meter and only use threat meter. DPS is not important, what's important is that you as a group survive and clear the dungeon. Aggro however is important, since over-aggro in mid to high-level dungeons with a slightly lazy healer can result in instant death. You mostly never know the skill level of the people in your group, so assume the worst until they have proven otherwise. You could think only really good players want to play a tough challenge as HC, but then you just have to watch a couple of death clips compilations to see most players are just like normal WoW, just casuals, trying to have a fun time. Other things that might be worth keeping in mind: If you're a mage, hunter or lock that can dish out some AoE damage, please, for the love of god, let the tank hit on the mobs a bit before you start nuking, this is especially important when you're in a group with a warrior tank, so they can generate rage quickly, and keep threat. If you start by Cone of Cold or Multi-shot at the same time tank charges in, you will rip aggro and tank will have to waste any rage he has trying to regain control of the mobs. At that point you're not helping your team, you're actually making it harder for the whole group. Healer has to waste mana to keep you alive and tank has to run around chasing mobs trying to taunt without rage. I know you want to pump, but at least wait 3-5 seconds before pumping. It's not like we upload logs anywhere, what's more enjoyable for everyone is to have a smooth, safe run rather than having scuffed pulls every single trash pack just so you can be topping the DPS chart. Always have an escape route ready. Even if it's just 2 normal mobs you're about to pull, with a lot of players around and dynamic respawns, that 2-pull can suddenly turn into 3 or 4 and by the time you realize you need to run there could be even more respawns behind you, making escaping nigh impossible. If you go into a cave and the entrance is already cleared, you have to realize you never know when those respawns will pop up and take that into account when deciding if you should enter or not. If you decide to enter the cave, let's say, and you're fighting a mob inside and suddenly you see a hunter coming running towards you with 5 mobs after him, start running out immediately. If you stay and fight your mob while he runs out, those 5 mobs will then turn on you as soon as he lost aggro. It's very common in caves with unintentional griefs like that. Always be on the look-out for the surroundings, pan around the camera to check respawns/patrols etc. Everyone makes mistakes, the only thing that matters is that you learn from them, so as not to repeat them. Watch death clips compilations with or without commentary and you will learn a lot, what to avoid, what to think about etc. Don't feel bad if you can not make it to level 20 on the first tries. Most classes are pretty damn weak in the beginning because they don't have the full tool-kit to work with, for example rogues and mages are especially squishy and also hunters before they get pet can be pretty rough. If you die, you can always go agane, so don't smash your monitors or anything because something went wrong. Just delete the character, take a little break, then go again, same class or new one, whatever floats your boat. And lastly, always record or at least have some kind of app to record the last few minutes of gameplay (like nvidia Shadowplay or Xbox game bar). As long as Blizzard haven't made an official servers, some deaths can be forgiven/forgotten, like for example if you get DC mid-fight or mid-flight, if you have a recording of both the DC and the relog back in, you can post the video in the Classic HC discord and the mods (who do this in their freetime btw) will look at your video and decide if your character is really dead or not. If everything checks out and they see that it was actually the game's fault you died, and not yours, then you are free to going further on that character, basically your death is nullified. (Im about 95% sure Blizzard won't have any way to forgive deaths like that when they make official servers so take advantage while you can). Also it can be fun, if you do some insane elite quests or find an epic or whatever, to have video clip of it, not only for yourself but for others as well! Sorry for the book, pretty sure no one will read it anyway lol. But good video, you brought up the important stuff like not running with your back towards the enemy, leashing and parry-haste.

I have a LVL 80 hardcore. Very satisfying. Lvld to 60 in classic, 70 in tbc and just recently got 80. Nearly lost her many times. I recommend lock for pet and trained mounts

Very good video. Another good tip is to know when to stay and fight and when to run. A lot of the time if you run from a group of mobs that you could feasibly kill, it could save your life instead of spending that time running and dying.

Also on leashing, if you pull a few mobs all at once with an aoe then focus on one as you kite away the other mobs you aren't hitting should leash back after ten seconds or so, where if you just pull the pack by hitting one mob they will all have a linked leash and all will reset their leash timer anytime you hit any one of them

As to mechanicals - you didn't mention the one really big reason why warlocks are so screwed against them - they're immune to the voidwalker's taunt. That's something I remember a whole lot from leveling my gnome warlock through westfall.

Since hardcore bans you from using the auction house and mail, make sure to hoard potions/food/consumables you get from questing/grinding. You may have to grind on green mobs for a while to get the cloth you need to level first aid.

My advice for Hardcore is the same advice that i had for my friends when they started classic when it just came out: Dont meta game the fun out of the experience. Alch and engi are the best professions? Cool, but do you really want them or do you feel forced to use them couse they are the best you got? RestedXP leveling advice? well do you want to do everything on a schedule or do you wanna figure it out yourself? Its a game. Its meant to be fun. If you meta game the fun out of the game, then whats the point? Yeah you might clear the challenge, but did you enjoy your time or not?

Save some burst for last 10% is huge, best recommendation. Some extra from me; avoid darkshore nelfs, its too hard and too much walking. Spirit is great on warriors if you want to level fast, the cap is around 45 so its easy to max and its like instant self healing AFTER every fight.

wait if you are healing in a group- who gets the blame? you for not healing in time? or the person who died because of fire or aggro?

@@coffeebux It's situational. For example my warrior tank friend gets pissed off whenever hunters start by multi-shotting before he can even get aggro so he doesn't even try to save him at that point. He tells me to not heal him and let him get scared, so hopefully it doesn't happen again, but I'm not evil like that and not going to let a party member die, even though sometimes I feel like some deserve it, I would feel too much that it was my fault. Healer gets the blame if tank dies imo, but if dps rips aggro and gets clapped, then that most of the time the dps's fault. The best way to get a safe and smooth run on HC is just to jump into discord and use voice comms. That way healer+tank can keep in contact and can call-out for polymorphs, mana issues, silences, need for heals, dispells etc etc. Voice comms is also good because your group will perform best when it actually plays like a unit and not 5 guys doing their own thing. Keep it friendly, keep it short, keep it sweet. If one guy falls of a ledge into a pack of mobs, you can let him die and hearthstone out or you can be the absolute chads who all jump down to him, save his ass and continue with the run. I prefer the latter!

Even when everything is fine and you’re in a flow… don’t get overconfident. You might have killed 3 at the time 20 times. At one point you’ll get low and try to run, and run in a patrol or a spawn.

I went back to Vanilla WOW when it was first offered a few years ago. One thing I tried to do was not rushing to get to the next zone. I did all the quests in the start-up zone first before moving on to the next zone. And it made the next zone a heck of a lot easier. I then did all the quests in their before moving on. It really gets you into all those nooks and crannies. Sure there are a few zones I "skipped" and barely touched. But they're for the next toon I play.

#1 Tip: Anytime you're thinking of doing something risky, ask yourself how much time you stand to save by doing it. Then it's simply "Is saving _____ worth losing ___hours of playtime on?" ...I think you'll find the answer is almost always "No."

This also goes for queueing for quest mobs now the servers are exploding in popularity. A lot of the early game quests can just be replaced by killing 10 boars. Live to win, baby

Random semi-useful tip: Hydrocane and non-melee classes. Hydrocane is a staff that requires Levdl 27 and can be looted from Viscous Fallout in Gnomeregan. It allows for underwater breathing. If you're playing a class that doesn't necessarily need a "stat stick" on them at all times, this can be *invaluable*. Or, ya know, take Alchemy and brew some Potions of Water Breathing. Whichever!

I think HC attracts a lot of different people but the main ones are the 1. casuals who don't want to raid 2-4 times a week and grind constantly just to be on par, 2. the people who are honestly not good enough to find a decent raiding guild (we're talking back peddlers and clickers) and 3. people who just want to have a new kind of wow experience, where it's not purely about getting to max level by buying mage-boost and then start grinding, but actually playing the game all the way through, enjoying the nostalgic zones and quests and enjoying the minor upgrades (every upgrade feels HUGE on hc) So I'm not so sure if methodical is the right word but the rest of the sentence is flawless if you know what I'm saying.

My advice: Don't be greedy with your tags. I see that happening so often in overfarmed areas. Players tagging 2-3 mobs just so no one else gets them and they might safe a few minutes. Almost no one is going to help you if you are greedy and you make it so much more likely to die. Even if you can deal with the mobs you pulled, another spawn behind your can easily end your run. Don't be greedy, if you want to make it past level 20

Never underestimate your ability to kill runaways fast enough, because more times than not, they WILL manage to grab the attention of nearby mobs.

My advice: think out of the box on spec's. Stop leveling with the max dps/raid spec. Get talents that will help you reach 60 via survival, hp or just avoidance talents

what is not covered is that certain key location have absurd respawn time like caves or well know quest hot spot. pay attention around you and the respawn, and dont forget if something goes wrong do not panic, stay calm.

I was thinking about Raiding in Classic Hardcore official and I think there is a simple solution, once you get to 60 and enter a raid, you have 1 life in there for the lockout, if you die you cant go back in.

You are a god. I knew for most of addons but the video is mega useful. Only Macro i cannot find is the weapon swap offhand to the shield. Shield slam with warrior and than returning the offhand weapon for the fury spec. Arms is eaven harder.

Something I learned the hard way a couple days ago: when you complete a dungeon, leave with the group. If they hearth out, you hearth out. If they decide to walk out, walk out with them. Do NOT clear Scarlet Monastery - Library and go back for Mythology of the Titans when your group has hearthed out. Unless you want to feel what it's like to be in a horror movie. I always thought that elites didn't respawn in instances until the daily reseet. This is NOT the case.

Some ideas … Play multiple hardcore chars in rotation, to maximize resting state. Mark patrolling mobs (especially in caves) with raid target icons, so you can see them coming even out of sight.

Hello and thank you for this video. I have a question: I installed the Hardcore addon, but to my horror I discovered it applied to ALL of my WoW Classic servers. I play "ordinary" WoW Classic, "ordinary WOTLK Classic" and retail. I don't want my "ordinary" classics to become hardcore. Is there any way to remove the addon from selected servers (or at least to switch it off) and to have it only apply to one specific server? Thank you :) PS: Because the Hardcore addon does not appear in the list of addons on the pre-loading screen, you can't simply turn it off in that way.

They won't become hardcore just ignore it. The addon doesn't affect your character at all jt just tracks it for verification when you hit lvl 60

I got to 60 on my 3rd try(solo). The first time I died at 14 from the outriders in the Barrens popping on me, 2nd time I was careless and talking in Discord and died in STV at 42. 3rd time was the charm but I almost died 5-6 times. Playing alone all the time besides grouping with other hc for a few dungeons took a toll on me though. I really enjoy group play. I don't recommend trying this if you aren't in a good state of mind.
