A little over 20 years ago I was a kid and already had a passion for comic books. One day I went to the dollar store and saw they were selling comic books. I'm guessing they were leftovers and were bought off at a cheap price from some furnisher who went bankcrupt or something. They had no idea what they were selling. All of them were brand new comics from the 80's ( this was in the early 2000's, so they were already a tiny bit rare ). There were some darker titles that aren't in much demand, but some Amazing Spider-Man and the now popular Suicide Squad were in there. Being a fan of the Ninja Turtles back then, I knew that what I was seeing was worth a lot more than a few bucks. I ended up with a bunch of first, second and third printings of the original TMNT comics. For a handful of dollars. Buying them without going crazy was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do in my entire life. Most of them are now worth between a few hundreds and a few thousands. I haven't sold one and don't intend to. Leonardo #1 is by far my favorite in the lot even if it's not the most valuable. It's action packed from beginning to end and was most likely an inspiration for the first film when Raphael fights the whole foot clan, as some of the shots are near identical. I think the Turtles/Mirage Studio comics are worth mentioning when it comes to valuable non-DC/Marvel comics, although I do admit they aren't as old as the Gold Key era ones we see here.

There were zombies aplenty in comics before Menace #5. That book was, however, the first appearance of Marvel's (then Atlas) Simon Garth character, the Zombie, who was revived later in his own magazine, Tales of the Zombie (1973).

Solid List. As a Disney Fan (Especially Donald Duck) I have to add Four Color #9 (First Carl Barks writing Donald Duck). CGC 9.4 sold for $40k and Four Color #178 (First App of Uncle Scrooge). CGC 9.6 sold for $90K I've been getting more and more into the Golden Age Books. There's something about them. Those horror covers have been skyrocketing lately. I asked a vendor at a comic con about them. Surprisingly, he told me many of the people asking about them were younger fans

Really interesting topic James. I am always astounded when comics from the early 1940s turn up graded at 9.0 or above, how these books were kept out of harm's way boggles the mind; even simply storing them flat between newspapers, you'd think that deterioration of the inks and paper would have severely affected the comic's quality. Is that robot on the cover of Startling Comics #49 Bender's dad? The likeness is striking. War comics James: EC, Atlas and the beginning of DC's long-running war titles should be on the list.

Nice video man. I suspect horror comics are going to become more and more the dominant non-superhero genre in the golden age, at least when it comes to values. Back when I first got into comics - I have an Overstreet guide from 1978 which tells some of the story - it was the Disney stuff that was second only to the superheroes, and that's fallen way way off - despite Disney being such a dominant media conglomerate, and despite kids' stuff generally being such a big part of our culture. I still find that kind of strange - why aren't Donald and Mickey and Uncle Scrooge more valuable? Anyway one of the things I like about the GA is the wide variety of genres, something that started to disappear when the Marvel Age began. So it's pretty easy to come up with a cool list of early stuff but it might be a bit harder to do a similar video for the Silver Age or the early Bronze. I think after the late 70s (and specifically Cerebus #1) you start to see more independents in the valuable comics mix again, though still nothing close to what's there in the golden age.

The MAD 1 and War on Crime 10 9.8 were Gaines file copies (pedigree). Back when EC was publishing comics, Bill Gaines would take about a dozen copies of each comic from the print run and seal them in a Manila envelope. Decades later, when the envelopes were opened, every copy was sparkling NM-M condition and are the highest graded ECs in existence.

Knights of the Dinner Table #1 from Alderac Group should definitely be on this list in my opinion. It is a Dungeons&Dragons themed comic that sprang from Dragon Magazine back in the early 90's. This spawned many other publications that continued for many years. The print run on this book was 3000 ( I believe ) so they are extremely hard to come by. The books are incredibly funny and such a great read , especially if you have ever played Dungeons & Dragons.

I read and collected many books of that title. Unfortunately it is unknown by about 99% of the population, including many D&D players and indpendant comic readers and will not change. Probably not worth enough to be in video. No modern independant books in video as well. Original TMNT, Cererbus would have been there.

Enjoyed stepping away from the big two for a bit. Eerie #1 (Avon, January 1947) is the first all-original full horror book. The first horror comic is general considered to be Classic Comics #13 (Gilberton, August 1943), which adapted Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Classic Comics #27, adapting Frankenstein, followed in December 1945. Various horror stories also appeared in anthology books prior to Eerie #1, but Eerie was the first original all-horror book.

@@MintHunterComics keep the videos comin bro! I watch them all. Would love to see some McFarlane lists pre Image. Would also like to hear your take on where you see his books values 10, 20, 30 years from now. What do you think his legacy will be? Personally, I think he is the Jack Kirby of our era. What’s your take? What about artists like Jim Lee and some of the others? Another video idea is where do you see 80’s books, as it relates to value long term? I understand that people began taking better care of their comics in the 80’s and print runs increased, but do you feel that as gold and silver age books become too expensive for many, that the values from 80’s keys will begin climbing? Either way, would love to hear your take on where you think their values might look like 10, 20, 30 years from now. You could differentiate between Batman, Avengers, X-Men, Punisher, Hulk, Avengers, Ghost Rider, Wolverine, Spider-Man,etc (desirable, popular titles). As far as collectibility and value, do you feel that most 90’s books should be mostly skipped due to the high sprint runs? I’m not hearing too many really address these subjects. What characters do you see blowing up down the road that people may not be paying attention to? Ex. I feel X-23 is being VERY overlooked. I’ve been going after all of her major keys (NYX 3, her first book from her first solo series, keys from All-new Wolverine, etc.). I think everyone is looking for who might be the next Deadpool (relatively obscure before the movie blew him up). What are your thoughts? Another video I’d be interested in seeing is on affordable artists firsts. Ex. Jim Lee and Samurai Santa or his first Marvel work. Where do you see artists firsts long term? Do you feel that iconic covers are more collectible long term than artists firsts or writer’s firsts? Someday these iconic artists will no longer be around and do you feel that their firsts may skyrocket in value? Hopefully you see where I am going with some of this. DC- Now that James Gunn has taken over DC, what characters do you think people are overlooking? Sure, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Harley Quinn, etc, but what other more obscure characters do you think might blow up? I have my eye on Lobo (rather obvious), but what about characters like Mr Terrific (Spectre 54), Deadman, Hitman (I freaking love Section Eight), Vigilante, Booster Gold, etc. Are there affordable keys for characters that people shouldn’t overlook? Just trying to give you some ammo and things to think about for future videos because I respect your opinions and perspectives.
