Күн бұрын

Welcome back to Ugly Truck! Today Emily's back on the 1965 C10 and ready to tackle preserving this patina. After we got this truck running, we took it to the carwash and it looked much better. But why stop there! Armed with nothing more than a box of SOS Pads ($4) and some high traffic floor polish ($20), Emily gives this old Chevy a serious transformation! This is commercial grade polish, so this finish should be pretty durable. We're hoping for many months (or years!) before we need to recoat. We ended up with a nice satin finish, which dries quickly with no greasy, oily film like other wipe on recipes. With this method, there's no mixing products. Just scrub it down with SOS Pads until you have the look you're going for, then grab an old sock and start wiping on some ZEP High Traffic Floor Polish. For a $25 total investment, this is a great way to seal and protect the look of any rat rod on any budget.

@@UglyTruckExperience Is there a down side to putting on more coats? Would it provide more protection or get too shiny? Or maybe get opaque or yellow from the layers? While I was at it I'd be inclined to put on extra coats since it would already be prepared and that is that hard part.

A couple people have told me that yes, it will get yellow and hazey over time, so I kept it as light as I could. I like you. I love what you did to your truck. I have an old rusty F-150 that I thought I was going to have to slap a cheap Maaco paint job on. It has lots of surface rust but nothing deep. Your method would be perfect. You sold me! I really like that if I don't like how it turns out, it is easily reversible and I can have it painted. So no down side in trying. Thank you very much.. I just subscribed. Oh .... your old truck deserves to have those rust holes fixed. Don't let it rust into the ground. Just sayin'.

That's awesome! Thanks so much for subscribing! The guy we got this truck from said it belonged to his uncle, and he was pretty sentimental about it... so I feel like it's right to let their story live on. It took 57 years to look like this, and while it might not win any car shows, I love the way it looks. That being said, there's some structural stuff under the cab that needs to be addressed before it can be a real driver. We have a couple other videos on this truck if you want to check them out! After all the comments and ugly truck updates I took the leap to do the Zep polish on my 81 Toyota pickup. Unfortunately, the truck is beige (with patina of course) and the zep went on too yellow for my liking so I bought the stripper and removed it all. 1 hour of application (2 coats) took 5 to remove. Now I’m back to considering paying for a spray on application

Boiled linseed oil and a little mineral spirits. I would say would be better than wax.
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience 2 жыл бұрын
A lot of people use that method, but I didn't want a high gloss shine or a greasy finish. I found matte and satin kits for patina, but they were spray on and over $100 on the cheap end. I plan to restore this truck at some point, so for the investment, I'm very happy with the results. 👍

@@UglyTruckExperience Wax isn't necessarily a bad thing. It can be removed if it does become a problem. Leaving them in the damp forest covered in leaves. Or a tarp.Definitely a bad thing.

Thanks Jesse! Nope, it's not greasy or tacky at all. It's the same stuff they use on commercial floors, so it's a smooth hard finish. Feels just like the floor of a Walmart! 🤣 Two years of sun and rain later, it still looks good. I do wish I had done a couple extra coats on a couple of the rough spots, and will recoat it someday. Second time I’m seeing this floor sealer as a clear coat for cars. The finish looks more natural for an old car compared to the kits that are too shiney. Looks like it dries too fast to have a wipe off stage. About to do this myself
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience Ай бұрын
Hi Michael! I've been really happy with it so far. I also liked that it was more of a satin finish, and I can add layers to add shine. It does dry pretty quick, so I'd recommend doing it in the shade. Awesome! I haven't tried turtle wax on it so I'm not sure how that would work. But Zep makes a whole line of floor cleaning/refinishing products. Mine still looks pretty good after 2+ years, but it did lose a little shine. I'm going to try their floor cleaner and recoat with the same polish and see what happens. Should have a video on that sometime soon! Thanks for tuning in, and let us know how it goes if you try it!

Wonder how this would work on a late early 90s Chevy truck. They had clear coat issues where it didn't adhere to the paint. Just thought you might be able to use this method on where the clear has went away
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience 10 ай бұрын
I'm not a paint and body expert, but I think when that happens, they usually sand it down and respray the clear coat. I'm not sure if the floor polish trick would be good for that. It has a different texture and shine than a normal clear coat, so I'd be worried about blending it into what you have. Keep us posted, I'd be curious to see what you figure out. Hey there awesome truck I have a question so the video says it’s about a year old how long did you have your satin shine? And is it undercover does it sit out in the elements I live in Idaho we have hot summers and snowy winters. I’ve tried the Linseed oil trick It doesn’t last very long at all basically a few weeks . I’m thinking about doing this on a 1950 Buick fastback that my grandparents bought new here in town. Thank you, Alan
