Friend, there are Khibiny complexes on Russian planes! They disable all the destroyer's electronics (yes, weapons too). It is not so easy to shoot down a Russian plane. And yet - Russian combat aircraft are on average 3 times cheaper than American ones.
@dodobird6793 жыл бұрын
Not to mention, those guns are way out of range. Regardless of ecm, Phalanx only has a maximum range of ~1.5km. judging by the bullet travel time, the sukhoi was over 3km out. At those ranges, a crop duster could probably avoid those bullets Was a lemon when that missile came in though, deserved to be shot down then Though in practice, if that sukhoi was really gunning for that destroyer, they'd hit it with an AShM from 200+km out, not doing dumbass flybys

Phalanx was designed to take on incoming antiship missiles, Aircraft and other airborne threats from sea level to 15,000 Ft out to 3 to 6 Miles. Note during early testing the Phalanx demonstrated a 90% kill rate per 2 burst encounter. The system tracks the target and each round fired out to the target and adjust with devastating effect. Recently the system has been upgraded to include inferred and thermal imagery and tracking to take on Mk 3+ and Hypersonic weapon systems. Average burst is 2 to 3 seconds or 200 to 300 rounds per burst. The next systems that are now coming online are High energy weapons such as Laser and partical beams. Magnetic Rail guns are also showing promise as both anti-ship, anti-land and Anti-Air, Anti-Missile and anti-sat or space craft weapons system. These are true Hypersonic weapons with range in the 100s of miles, both ballistic and Guided projectiles are in the works.

Still wouldve gotten pounded to death my multiple Iowa and S.Dakota Class Battleships. But I wouldve like to see the Yamato or Musashi, fight it out with an Iowa. The Bismark is no match on paper, but the leadership of that ship, was far superior...and they were buddies(sort of), so that never wouldve happened. There is a great 3 part video(20mins each), that shows if Japan wouldve joined the British against Germany(several real factors, almost caused that), then bombed Pearl Harbor, and America fought with Germany and Italy, against Japan, the Soviets, and the British. Never gave them supplies, but used our heavy bombers out of France, to destroy Englands infrastructure, and help the Germans breakout of Stalingrad. Tirpitz was taken to a US port, and never destroyed by the British. We use our planes to protect German skies, so their production of weapons are never really effected, therefore able to stop the Soviets at Kursk. In theory, with the help of German Scientists, its estimated we wouldve had the Atomic Bomb, 6mths ahead of time, etc etc. Its done very well, for anyone interested in WW2.

They really should create ships like this & assign 1 per carrier strike group. It would be an incredible fleet defender. For ground forces they could create an 18 wheel semi flat bed version.
@a564-c3q3 жыл бұрын
The Phalanx CIWS is obsolete. Nobody would trust it to reliably intercept a state of the art super sonic anti-ship-missile. Also note that the Phalanx is mounted on deck, not through the deck. A Phalanx has one ammo drum of with a capacity of 1550 rounds. At 4500 RPM the ammo will run out after 20 seconds of firing. That's about 10 engagements. Reloading the drum takes a minimum of 30 minutes and since it requires sailors to be on the deck it can only be performed if there's no threat anywhere near. But that's ok, because there are several layers of defenses provided by interceptor missiles. 1. Layer: SM-2/SM-6 with a range of up to 350 km. 2. Layer: ESSM with a range in excess of 50 km. 3. Layer: RIM-116 with a range of 9 km. The RIM-116 is slowly replacing the Phalanx as last line of defense. A carrier group with its AWACS planes can detect incoming missiles and aircraft at ranges of up to 400 km. So, most threats will get intercepted by SM-2/SM-6 missiles. If a threat makes it through and closes in to about 50 km, then there's the ESSM. Four of these fit in a single VLS cell, so they got plenty. Last line of defense will be in most cases the RIM-116 which is worlds apart from the Phalanx. In total a carrier group has several hundreds of interceptor missile ready to fire at all times, whereas the exact number depends on the number of escort ships and their VLS loadout.

I was going through another school at Great Lakes near Chicago. A fire control tech took our class of about 10 into the CIWS Phalanx room. He lined us up against the wall and gave us goggles and ear muffs. He programmed the gun to scan for us and fire. It was the neatest thing to see the R2D2 swing that 20mm gun over and just go to town on all of us from one end to the other!!! Then it went back to the start position when done!!! That was almost 40 years ago. I would think 🤔 the system is so much better now, because they still use it. I still have the dummy round he gave me. If you think it is awesome, you are right. But not everybody can say they got blasted by one and survived. He did say that the radar tracks the target AND THE OUTGOING ROUNDS. It makes them converge, that’s amazing!! You can’t miss, not with something like rounds only separated by inches. The noise was loud even with the muffs. I remember the experience even after all those years. It seems like it was yesterday!!!! Awesome, absolutely!!!!

That's awesome, I worked for GD building the very first production system. We never referred to the fire control as R2D2, we called it the Big White Dick, LOL... This was 1971 for first production system and prototype goes 10 years back from there, Proto1. Pretty ancient beast !
