He was way ahead of his time. Thrashing the cricketing notions, conventions, stereotypes,general sayings of his era with minimal ease. Batting such aggressively ans winning the half war by just his walk to the crease. Batting at 80 -90 in an era where having a strike rate of 60 was considered very good. Odi cricket just begun. I've been watching cricket for 60 years. Australia and the West Indies had very good sides in the 70s & 80s. Whenever Viv dealt with thunderballs from the fearsome Lillee and Thomson the atmosphere was electric / super-charged. You just never knew what could happen. Four! Six! Six! Four! Six! Bowled! Easily the most exciting cricket I've ever seen.

On the contrary, Laxman played a magnificent innings to win that test for India. Rahul Dravid played a stellar support cast to get India there. Harbhajan excelled with the ball. Sachin is not a stepper-upper when the chips are down and as the superstar batsman, you are at the call of duty. Viv Richards has done it umpteen times. So has Ian Botham. So has Brian Lara. When you are ranked the greatest player to have ever played the game and yet none of your innings are worthy of mention for the 100 greatest innings, you are just playing for personal glory and nothing else.
