I used to listen to this song while outside in the afternoon watching pieces of flowers fall when there was wind.

I finally did what I don't do enough: Give a new band a listen. I've listened to a few random NIN songs in the past, but I never really dived in and... holy crap I'm glad I did. I probably don't fully grasp the story that this album is telling yet, but I can already tell that it's one I'll be holding onto. Fantastic 👍

as a nin fan admittedly it's one of the more messier concept albums but it's sonically the best trent offered at the time

3:02. The flies, they make the whole sense; they establish the significance after that crescendo. Brilliant, disgustingly brilliant

StarFuckers and We are in this Together prevent it from being the best ever. It is in the Top Ten however, even with those awful songs. Trent should punch himself in the dick for putting those songs on this album.

Time wise, they could have inserted with decay on the vinyl. It's not like there wasn't space, and honestly after adding in songs, to me, I feel the vinyl hurts for as impressive as it also represents, due to that fact. Sorry, but I grew up with the CD and I love the ending. To me, it's far more fitting than just a simple fade out of the guitar.

@@Bear-yn5xj i've always viewed decay the same way i view the downward spiral (the song). the protagonist gets a surge of energy, and in one final act chooses to end it all; they commit suicide. it feels really weird to not have decay end off the album because of that interpretation, though this version is still haunting in its own way i think. it sort of feels similar to surrogate drone ending off soundtracks for the blind.

Honestly, I think I prefer Ripe on its own. Decay is good too, but I personally the feeling of just, pure unbridled violation and repulsion that this track leaves on me feels more, impactful? Like I sit there to just think on it more, and it gives me the chills tbh, compared to the confusion Decay leaves me with. Though I am somewhat conflicted on which I prefer, I lean towards Ripe on its own.

@@sauerkrautandonions Each to their own, but I do love your description. It's interesting how a person/group's image can become a metaphor for all the work that was put in.

I know it's been many years but with Decay is supposed to be an alt. ending, Ripe is supposed to fade out into Still as a hopeful and reflective epilogue, sort of like a "good" ending

this ending loop sounds even more haunting than the version that includes "with decay"

There is an old version of New Orleans, that doesnʻt really exist anymore, that I feel this end to this album was inspired by.
