Hey guys, well this video is going to be a little different. Today we are swapping out the Electro-viscous fan clutch on our 2013 Dodge Ram Diesel 2500. It had been giving us problems throughout the years by not picking up the electrical signal to engage the fan while the AC was on. I replaced multiple sensors and have had the AC rebuilt after it went bad, Probably due to overheating, so I was happy to find this adapter from Strictly Diesel out of Arizona. I know I could have most likely done more research to find the root of the problem but I chose to go another route. We decided to go back to basics with making the swap back to a more traditional mechanical fan clutch. When you consider that this style of clutch had been in use for roughly 60 yrs, there's a good reason its been used so long,.... because it works. So if this is something you are currently struggling with on your rig, Give this video a look. This video is also a small introduction to letting my helper get his hands dirty and learn new things. Kick back and watch him give it a go. Thanks for your support in advance and I hope this helps you guys.
Side note: We have been on the road lately with this truck over some mountains and this thing is working flawlessly as it should. Glad we made the swap.

For anyone doing this. Pull the bolts from the shroud extension like they did BUT pull the main shroud first then you dont have to fight the shroud extension out around the fan . Done a bunch of these and thats the easiest way ive found .

To your son: Enjoy every minute, every second you spend with your father! Learn all you can, while you can as none of us are guaranteed a tomorrow!!! I lost my father a couple years ago and wish I had 5 more minutes with him to tell him how much I love, miss, and appreciate him and all he's done for his family!!! Have fun and vacuum up all the info you can from your dad, they're a lot smarter than we son's give them credit for ;-)

Your son is articulate. Succinct, clear description with perfect diction. Very rare. 99.8% of his peers are all about "like" and "ya' know" and "um..." every third word. I know you're proud, and you should be. So should he!

Fantastic to see you teaching the boy. Sure it can be done faster by simply having him watch you, but it is far more valuable for him to do the job and gain that confidence for the future. And when he teaches his son, it will be because of you.

My '14 2500 was just the opposite, the clutch fan locked up. Sounded like a jet taking off all the time. Also killed the fuel mileage by about 2-3 MPG. Dodge was proud of that clutch also.

Hey Issac, that " feel " for how much to tighten comes after breaking and stripping a few bolts!:) It's that "Oh Crap!" moment:) It's the same with the one remaining bolt covered with junk or the difference between knowing it will come loose or not being sure. I hope your son continues to enjoy working with you. Passing on the knowledge is a good thing!:)

Very nice video Isaac! One thing I miss is working on things with my father. Nothing brings me greater joy than working on things with my son teaching him along the way. We have to run those type of fan hubs up here in Michigan on our snow plow trucks. We can’t get enough air pass the snowplow blade to cool the motor in the winter running on the highway so we have to put a solid hub on there to get continuous airflow. They work great!!

Thanks Isaac and Son for sharing the fan upgrade. You are right about the mechanical fan clutch being robust. I only had to replace one on my 1990 F-150 4.9L when it would not free spin when cold, which is a way to check them. Your fuel consumption will go up when it fails closed/engaged.

Something I learned from my Uncle, long ago. He taught me how to tighten a bolt or nut to the approximate correct torque. Used a torque wrench set to 50, 80, and 100. tightened 100 bolts at each setting. This helps learn muscle memory and feel for the correct torque.

As with a lot of the other comments this reminds me of learning mechanics with my Dad. This never ended well as he had little to no patience with me and I was thrown off the job every time practically before I started. With comments on how useless I was. Good job I can learn by watching from a safe distance as I like playing with mechanical things. And no more remarks as he died over 10 years ago.

Great repair! It might be because I've been through your older videos....but looks like your son has really grown- I have 12 & 13yo boys, & we work together on a lot of projects (trucks, SxS, rifles, etc). In a recent paper for school, my oldest said that he "wanted to be a WELDER." He's already seen a couple of your torch videos; but there's several others that I plan to send to him as well. Keep on keeping on-

You're very lucky being able to spend time like this with your son. My Dad never had the patience to do stuff like this with me as a young lad. I have the patience to do this stuff with my son, but it sadly doesn't interest him. He's 18 and going off to university, so electronics and welding (my hobbies) don't interest him in the slightest. Enjoy your time together and I'll enjoy watching you both as always.

Great start for I C Young Man into the KZbin channel. Well done! Those viscous fan (fan clutch) couplings are a pain. I had to buy a special spanner to get the fan and coupling off a Land Rover Defender Td5 l once owned. It was a piece of 1/4 plate cut to size in a spanner style. Those Td5 engines ran so cold, you could take the fan off in late autumn and run all winter with no fan. Interesting stuff guys!

To freeze a metal object, I use canned air duster from the big box store. Turn it upside down, spray and it will freeze objects almost instantly. I had a bearing race stuck in an axle housing. No idea how to get it out then I thought about my computer duster can. I turned it upside down, sprayed the bearing race until it was frozen and pulled it out by hand. And yeah I know the welding trick but I didn't have a welder, the Jeep was in the middle of my driveway, I didn't have a bearing race puller, and it worked and only cost a couple dollars for the can.

Method to the old man’s thinking, the son has a lot skinnier arms, means less nicks and cuts. It would probably be difficult with the spindle being so far down, but sometimes spinning something backwards until you hear/feel a click let’s you know when you matched the start of the threads.
