I was born in 1953. I had an aunt, never married, who worked in a sewing factory. Only well into adulthood, long after she was gone, did I realize she must have acquired a loan in order to buy a Singer 401a, a triumph of 1950s engineering. It was fabulously expensive at the time for her meagre means. Many of my fancy childhood dresses were sewn on her 401a machine, and when I was a young teen, she taught me basic sewing skills on it. When I was in my 60s, we moved my mom to assisted living and I was offered the sewing machine. I sat with it in my arms and literally sobbed, overcome by memories of my aunt and with gratitude to have that precious machine she so treasured. I also have the cabinet. My brother refurbished the machine I named Kate after her original owner. It's one of my most prized possessions.
