That brought a tear to my eye! There is something special about this hobby that is unlike anything else. I attended the 2 day Old Warden event this year and we had wonderful weather! On day 2 I was sitting on the free flight line with my friend of over 40 years in modelling, and we sat and drank a beer or two from the cooler and he said, "I'm not that worried about flying, I did plenty yesterday, some today and I think I'll just sit here and soak it all up!" And that's what we did. A times one or the other of us would exclaim "Ooh! look at that! Brilliant!" like kids new to the hobby. We sat, we dank beer, we wandered about and asked people about their models, answered questions from those that asked us the same thing..... and just soaked it all up! Really we're not on this planet for long in the greater scheme of things and I hope to have a few more days like that.

Great post - That all white Howard DGA-6 (aka Mr. Mulligan) was really sweet ! That "Gloster AS" twin prop driven by a single rubber band via two 'wire' drive was crazy - would like to see how that was done. It made interesting sounds when launched with its mechanisms spinning up ! Sad to see the Voyager break up on re-entry. That Farman Goliath was and unusual bird - great lines and a beautiful build and flight Many other excellent models - !

A while back, I asked you if you would consider making a video on how to select rubber motors for various sizes and types of models, and how to determine what the maximum number of turns should be. You said that you might be willing to do a video like this in the future. Since this is the building season up North, do you think that you might be able to put one together sometime soon? Thanks for the videos that you produce.
@maxfliart2 ай бұрын
Thx for the reminder. I haven't been able to follow thru with a specific film, but there are hints that appear in the films from time to time. Here's a rubber turns calculator grid that can put u in the ballpark. hallmanstudio.com/rubber_turns_calculator.pdf Regarding the size of the motor, I've used a general sense that to start, the motor should weigh at least 25% of the empty weight of the model, and at least 2.5 times the hook to rear peg length. Most motors are two loops of the given size of rubber. With a bit of trial and error, and continuing experience, you'll see what cross section and length of rubber works best for the size model u like to build.

Last time I commented on one of your videos I hadn’t built a stick and paper plane since grade school ( in the 60’s) I still haven’t built one but I have a Guillow’s Lancer kit in the line for this winter. What an awesome video! Thank you for sharing. The catapult SR71 bought back a lot of memories. At a pre-teen one of my favourite scratch built gliders was an F15 with about an 8" wingspan that flew beautifully if you got a nice transition. For all of the RC airplanes I fly these days, getting back to the basics is somehow more satisfying.

I flew there wow..probably 25 years ago .maybe longer .love watching the vids ..great appropriate music and well done overall. Very inspiring to see you guys flying . In the older days we did the flow powered stuff . I fly some gliders but electric powered to get it to heights. The freedom of free flight rubber powered is so nice.. I've build from kits stick by stick but only one rubber powered ..the others used little .015 ..or .019 glow engines with micro receivers . Anyway..thanks for the post and the time I had to reminisce about it all too ..at 65 it seems so long ago yet it's like yesterday to watch you guys ..hoping you all have many years to come to enjoy that wonderful hobby.

Thx. We have an FAC contest around Memorial Day and then the first weekend in October each year. Specific dates are listed on the Flying Aces Club's website calendar. The Brooklyn Skyscrapers hold monthly gatherings or fun flies, which I believe are also listed on their website. Otherwise, many of us spontaneously fly at the field year-round when the forecast is favorable.

Quite a bit of avid nose scallop sanding has been going on in the Schweizer dept..they say that "imitation is the best vsn of flattery", and unless I'm mistaken, there's a good representation here of Tom's design. I think Vance Gilbert's majestic Farman Goliath is a dream of a plane, damn glad that beauty did NOT get too entangled with the spray thingoes! A brilliant film, it's great to put a face to some of these great aeromodelers especially in such fab conditions! 🌟👍

Tom, address for field is Green Valley Onion Co. Do you have actual GPS chords (N lat x W lon) where you park your cars? I am handicapped, would watch from my car. I dont know when i would ever be able to go but God willing, sometime....Moses
@maxfliart2 ай бұрын
Yes, that's for the entrance to our field, so enter by the large silver silos. It's a gravel road. Go in 3/4 mile to the crossroads and turn left. We're usually on that gravel road that borders the sod farm. There is no parking area. We merely pull off, and back onto the sod a few yards. Here are the coordinates for the crossroad, the lone tree, and the Skyscrapers' shed. www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=41.329542%2C+-74.475303&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8
@robc52962 ай бұрын
Moses, Tom may have coordinates for you, but I used the following address from the Flying Aces site: 340 County Route 12, New Hampton, NY 10958. That will land you on County Route 12 at the silver silos you see at the beginning of the video. From there just follow the gravel road in past the silos and make a right once past the cornfield on your right. For this event the folks were set up and parked maybe a 1/4 mile down that road on the left. Please understand the set up / parking location may vary based on wind direction, but you should be able to spot them once out to the sod fields. I went as a spectator and highly recommend it; you will not be disappointed. Bring a set of binoculars if you have them, to zoom in on their wonderful flying machines in the air.

Congratulations to Mr Stagg there, also many many superb flights there. I shall stick my neck out KIND OF in defence of the evolutionary aspect of the 'wingtip-streamer-slo-down-the-trad-dark-pirelli' theory.. U mite consider that using multiple small fins on gliders/rubber power, as well as positioning the plane into variable airs, tends to have something of the desired effect of the streamers. You need power in hand to demonstrate this, and there's no better way to do this than by making a 1/4 A4 Elevon Delta (I think I posted a pic of one somewhere) and equipping it with inboard flaps as well as wingtip elevons. U only use a small triangular bit of the flap (normal 'down' throw), so it's not a true flap as such, but when you hurl the thing in the right way, it converts the energy into 'Forced Lift', to the delight and amazement of all, since one might make or "build" one of these in under 2mins, provided you've got the right papers (pre marked with wacky insignia etc), so you have this tiny airbrake which, under excess power burst, literally levers the thing into the air, whereupon it floats rather than zooms.. Speaking of zooming, Tom's Boeing Delta never fails to excite. I once saw a video of a trim flight which went not q to plan, resulting in the plane under advisement zooming straight past the camera on 50% power or something. Thank the lord it missed, but that bit of footage is PRICELESS.. You got a real sense of the power of a huge great fat flying machine comin' to get ya, and a sense of a cartoon scene par excellence. Big fuselages informs the great choice of P47 there by, was it Mr Smith? The point is, the illusion of massive solidity in the model is increased, as is the likely verisimilitude of its flying performance (slo fly 4 realism) by building huge fuselage types.. There's too much to comment on in this wonderful film! The amazing 1:1 splitter, I wonder about the many applications of the "7 Persons Shaving Drive", to mention just one, but this is one to revisit. A tour de force folks, thanks so much to everyone concerned! 🌟👍

In two hundred years in a post-oil post-capitalism world, where the world population is back under 2 billion and nature finally has a chance to heal, there will still be a small hard-core group of people flying rubber-band balsa-wood model airplanes.
